I was quite saddened that so many people hated this game before it came out and didn't even give it a chance. I admit that I was a bit shocked when the game was announced at the new direction, but I still eagerly pre ordered and went into it with an open mind- and I loved every minute of it. It's not perfect by a long shot, but there are so many references to the original series and it was so fun to play. If people play the game and don't like it, that's absolutely fine- it's not for everyone and I respect that. But it's the people that hate the game without even playing it that I don't understand.

Square Eyed Jak the whole calie being there just for side content agree with that but what she dose is gives you a boost lest say spyro is slow like slower then 2 snails getting it on with it there is a challenge where you get speed there a chance to get a speed upgraded if spyro speed was idk 20 and he dose all of the speed challenges he can get a +20 boost keep in mind i think they got rid of that in swap-force onwards but still but but a lot of stuff i agree with you on and do recommend playing threw the 3DS games also there not the same as the main console counterparts there standalone and pretty damn cheap i seem the SSA 3DS starter pack go for around 20-25$ CND

In the Wii version, the final level removes the waiting and just adds normal pathways to get to the keys. It’s not just that, some of the assets are less polished and makes things not look too shiny as shit. Even some parts of levels make things easier. Personally that’s my definitive version of the game

When I was younger I loved this series. I would spend hours playing the levels over and over again. The two-player mode was also fun cause it ment that I could play with my friends. I remember always getting excited when I got a new character. I will always look back on the early games with fond memories. It's nice to see someone give it some praise.

Funny enough, one of the best and most fun experiences I had in game shopping was Skylanders. I'm by no means EVER going to try and have them all, but when I finally broke down and checked this series out, I ended up getting the first two games, on both XBox and 3DS, all of the dragon figures, which got me one of each element, a giant, and the 5 level packs. Yeah it cost a little bit, but not NEARLY what I expected, as I got all of it used, and I ended up getting 4 REALLY good games, as the 3DS games are ENTIRELY different from the console games, and feel even more like a classic Spyro game, even down to actually jumping and gliding. I've since dabbled in the other games when I find them cheap, and oddly find the 3DS games to still be the best, as they save your skylander to the game instead of having to carry all of them around (First 2 games only store 2 at a time and a powerup, all of them after store EVERYTHING)

This was a good review! I honestly am with you in this opinion, I can't seem to find reason of people hating Skylanders so much since they kept Spyro relevant throughout the years and now hopefully they do the same for Crash Bandicoot. In Skylanders tv-series in Netflix they've got Spyro's attitude spot on too, he is almost like the douche we knew from the first trilogy. Later games he has also became more relevant too, having more character than, for example, Mario has.

There's three big reasons, Spyro's design, the fact he isn't the main character, and the toys to life system. If you were a child who had never played a Spyro game, and not old enough to purchase your own games, then sure of course you wouldn't find any reason to hate it. You didn't grow up with the original design, Spyro meant nothing to you, and you didn't have to buy Skylanders or any of the toys cause others most likely bought them for you. These were the reasons I didn't want to play these games, and are still the reason I haven't played them. I'm glad these games exist, but only because if it weren't for them we wouldn't have the Reignited Trilogy.

I know these games were made for kids, that doesn't mean they had to be so sleezy with the pay to play toy system or completely sideline a popular iconic character. The Reignited Trilogy, the N. Same Trilogy and CTR have proven that those games are STILL popular and not just with the people who remember them from back in the day. They even made a Crash 4 now and most likely will make a new Spyro. The redesign and sidelining of Spyro in this game is the reason I've never played it and have no real interest in ever doing so. Never said it was a Spyro game and that it needed to cater to me. Fine if you liked it but it's not my cup of tea.

Thank you! It's nice to see another Spyro fan enjoy this game for what it is and not be like everyone else hating the game just because of Spyro design. I like Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure, it is a fun game and the whole "toys comes to life" idea was pretty innovated. Also it's thanks to Skylanders that Spyro is still relevant. It just grinds my gears that a majority of Spyro fans hate the game just on Spyro design alone saying "it killed Spyro". I swear some people just need to grow up. Also there is only one Spyro game that I just hate and it's Enter the Dragonfly and some fans say it better than Sylanders at least Skylanders is fun and not a complete buggy and glitchy mess, unlike Enter the Dragonfly, which is just also a rehash of Year of the Dragon I know this is going to sound stupid but this review has just earned you another subscriber.

I'm not entirely sure about the glitches of Spyro Enter the Dragonfly. Granted, I have only played a teensy bit of the game but I haven't noticed any glitches yet. I feel like with how far we've come in time with the internet, people were able to upload and share these glitches, sharing how to pull them off. I feel like the average player wouldn't be aware of the glitches right off the bat. Though again, this is a biased opinion because I haven't played through the game in full yet.

The Skylanders games aren't bad, especially not the first one, but... people always criticize it for being bad, and being someone who experimented with the various skylanders, it actually forced me to learn how to adapt to different play styles, which is something I use even to this day. I have a theory that skylanders happens after dawn of the dragon. when spyro and cynder sacrifice themselves to rebuild the world, it becomes skylands. And spyro and cynder are reborn as different dragons with no recollection of past events in the spyro games.

SSA was originally developed for the Wii so every other version is a port made by Expex. There are many differences between the two such as the Wii version having faster enemies that hit harder and the Expex versions having an infinite money glitch.

I'm a gen z Spyro fan and Skylanders was my introduction to the series as well as one of the first games I ever played. This video was extremely vindicating, I'm glad Skylanders has seen more of a cult following in recent years but I never expected to see an actual genuine Spyro fan go into it with an open mind and see it for the pretty decent game it is. You can buy the 3 original Spyro games on PlayStation 3 in the online store for $6 CAD. I think you have to download a memory card app but it's free and very easy. That's how I Re played them recently.

The remake will enhance the graphics to a new level... but I don't know if the step up in graphic quality will be enough, the legacy that Spyro led toward Skylanders has been a rocky one at that. The trilogy was perfect, I still go back to them, I ignore the fact EtD ever existed, played Hero's Tail and it was decent, but wasn't consuming enough for me to finish and I didn't buy anything past that. Would a remake of the trilogy sell well in Spyro's case? I hope so, but I honestly don't know. I'd buy the first three first on PSN (PS3 PSN, because Sony are a bunch of twats who want to push PlayStation Now, yeah guess what Sony, my internet connection is too weak to stream so fuck you) and play through them from 1-3 then decide whether you want to shell a similar price for the remakes. Or alternatively look online and buy the three games and a functional PS1, the console is cheaper than the games ironically from the last time I looked anyway. Crash needed to come back for the current generation because it laid dormant for 9 years with nothing. I bought the N Sane trilogy and I loved it, (to give you some context, I do own the original trilogy too).

Nice review, dude. I never understood how people say Skylanders is bad because they use Spyro, a dormant franchise, to sell the game yet are perfectly fine with Nintendo using Samus. Ness, and Captain Falcon to sell Super Smash Bros. At least Skylanders lets you play as a whole cast of new characters rather than existing ones from other franchises, alive and dead. I like Super Smash Bros. and am not comparing the quality of the games, but rather the quality of the logic.

My first experience with Skylanders was when I saw my cousin playing it during Christmas time the year Skylanders Spyro's Adventure came out then I saw three characters Gill Grunt, Trigger Happy and of course Spyro I was shocked at first but when I got to have a go at it I really enjoyed it a year later my mum bought me the game and the starter pack plus I had also bought some Skylanders as well using the money I got and eventually I beat it and bought the remaining characters I didn't have As for Spyro's design I thought they where trying to fix him back to when he was popular by changing him from a more older looking dragon to a young dragon The game had a lot of stuff I enjoyed, the characters, levels, gameplay and the music which was composed by one of my favourite music composers Hans Zimmer who also composed the music to my favourite Disney movie The Lion King Spyro the Dragon always had great luck in the music department and the Skylanders series was no exception I did a year later play Skylanders Giants and still enjoy it to this day for all reasons I mentioned before and the new characters introduced where cool too But then I started to realise the series was costing me a lot of money and had to stop when Skylanders Swap Force came out which was a shame for me as I had enjoyed the games but I was getting into new franchises such as Assassins Creed, Bayonetta, Silent Hill and Resident Evil to name a few. (Oh and when I meant new I meant new to me) I do think there should be a point where they should try and remake the original trilogy and even maybe a new game at some point but for now I think he should stay with Skylanders until Activision thinks of something else to do with him plus I am grateful they did a better crossover between Spyro and Crash than fusion did Finally I'm grateful Crash is coming back as I still think he is a well recognised character and lots of people do remember him

Wow, I don't think I've ever disagreed with someone so much, at least about a video game. I agree Skylanders is a fine game, but to say it's anything like Spyro is completely mind boggling to me. Yes, the environments do look like something from Spyro 1, in fact I was excited for Skylanders when I first saw it, because it DID look like Spyro, at least at first. When I saw the actual gameplay, that's when my hopes died. You aren't gliding, collecting gems, exploring semi open levels, fulfilling objectives, or anything like that. It definitely doesn't help Spyro is one of 30 characters. Say what you want about Legend of Spyro, but at least Spyro was the focus. I am at least grateful Spyro is the main character of the TV show. I'm not saying change is bad, but if something's too different, why base it off an existing franchise? I would've much preferred if Spyro wasn't included in Skylanders.

Actually a huge part of the first game was collecting gems and coins to update skylanders and buy in game things. You also did have little objectives for a small portion of the level. If you wanted extra objectives to do you could buy the four adventure packs giving new levels. (Skummy I know) it had a lot of features similar to Spyro games. And all the levels there are so many places to explore and hunt for hidden treasure and cool items and soul gems. There’s even sparkz and cynder.

I think Activision rerelease the series as a single collection game but remove the toys to life model because it’s extremely predatory and just have you unlock characters by playing the game and being able to use them in other games and save files when you unlock them.

Awesome review, it is great to see youtuber who don't go with most popular opinion and actually can tell his real feeling about the game. I would personally put this game fifth best Spyro (behind original trilogy and heros tail) I hope that Crash sells good so possible Spyro trilogy remake could happen too. Nice to see Yooka-Laylee coming too this year after so many years pretty much only Mario and Ratchet & Clank giving really quality platformer experience constantly. Is platformers becoming popular again? I sure hope so

Great review Jak! I was unfortunately one of those people when the game was first revealed that said that Skylanders ruined my childhood and all of that nonsense. Nowadays I don't understand why people use this term at all. Just because something from your childhood changes, doesn't mean your whole entire childhood is automatically ruined. You still have your fond memories of playing the older games and you have the older games to go back and play, so why do people even use this term anymore? My biggest explanation is because it's a current term that people like to use for attention or views, kinda like all those "HOW THIS ED EDD N EDDY THEORY RUINS YOUR CHILDHOOD." Don't get me wrong, it's sad that activision saw Spyro as a cash cow rather than an actual game franchise, but on the bright side there's actual spyro merchandise now which was bare none back when I was a kid. Plus he's popular again with kids, so the skylanders series is kinda a double-edge sword. Oh and congrats on 10,000 subs man, keep on the great work!

I'm glad you like the games and don't mind Spyro's redesign... personally, I think he looks kind of odd but I can understand that kids like the way he looks, all I care about is how fun the game is and if it has a decent story... I thought I'd be alone on this, literally everyone hates Skylanders for either killing Spyro or being locked behind the "Toys to Life paywall" (We don't have money like you Activision), but it turns out I know a few people who like it for what it is... good going!

The whole point of Kaos' design is that canonically the player is of a similar power level to him, as both are portal masters. He's designed to be a direct rival to the player, so his appearance (which is meant to remind the player of like a school bully or smth) reflects that, looking anywhere from 5-10 years old to match the target audience

This is what I keep saying about the whole "Spyro was ruined because of Skylanders! I hate skylanders!" situation. I don't hate the game, nor the people who played this game. I hate how Activision, the #2 most HATED company, decided to use Spyro for cash grab. I never played skylanders in my life, but I know that you don't even HAVE to play as Spyro, or even Cynder. In my opinion, I don't think Spyro needed to be in Skylanders. TLoS got so much love that they were going to make a MOVIE. And guess what Activision did? They pulled out the scrap card. I would have LOVED to see a movie, after the cliffhanger at the end of DotD, but no. Activision instead proceeded to use Spyro for MONEY. Why? Because. It's Activision. Of course they're going to do that. Oh and here's an extra: After releasing the Reignited Trilogy, Toys for bob were going to work with Activision again and supposedly going to make a fourth classic Spyro game. But guess what Activision did? You guessed it: The return of the Scrap Card. They ended up stopping their partnership with TFB, and sent more Employees to fix Call of Duty: Warzone's anticheat or something related to that. And now here we are. At the time of posting this comment, it is currently July 25, 2021. The anticheat is STILL broken, and now Activision is under a lawsuit, which I would rather not explain the details. Whew that was a lot of typing. Anyways, Sorry for this whole essay, I just wanted to state my opinion. Again, no hate intended to you or Skylanders and its community. I see your point; the Skylander games aren't bad games on their own, but here's my jib with them; we went from Spyro games to games with Spyro; he's just one of the many other skylanders, and plays just about the same! It's like when they take Mario and Sonic and all related characters and make one of those Olympic Games... games; they all become pretty much the same character; gone is Sonic's super-speed, gone is Bowser and Blaze shooting fire... You get my point; sure, they're different, but in ways so minuscule it doesn't make a huge difference. Don't get me wrong, I think Skylanders has a right to exist, but if we could get a SPYRO game instead of a GAME WITH spyro, it would be pretty tits. PS: Please review War of the Monsters; that game needs more love.

One of my favorite parts is how EVERY ORIGINAL SKYLANDER HAS A DIVERSE PERSONALITY, BACKSTORY, AND MOTIVATIONS ALL 32 We have a dragon who's wings are too weak to naturally fly so he made a robotic battlesuit to do it for him We have a part unicorn part dragon character constantly faced with almost racism, but saving both factions later because she doesn't stoop that low We have an orphan who was so spiteful at being left alone she became a ninja We have a marine who's mermaid girlfriend was kidnapped by pirates so he became a hero to kill the guy who did it We have a knight who's actively trying to track down a murder a witch who turned him into a living flame The list goes on

Honestly during my 3rd grade year i disliked skylanders because of its toys to life stuff and what they did to spyro. i have an excuse i was a bratty 7 year old. I eventually got skylanders when the 2nd game came out and i loved it. Looking back at all this and your review Jak i really need to give the series more credit. i played all of them. Spyros adventure was very fun, and i started to care LESS about spyros design during the 2nd game. Since the graphics looked better and he looked way more detailed. Im guessing thats why i hated his design in the first. The graphics looked kinda bad so it made some stuff look ODD. Even looking at him now in imsginators he looks more dragon-like. I have a totally different view about this now thanks to your review. And no. This series didnt finish off spyro. He was kept on life support thanks to the series :P its obvious what started ruining the series. Also sorry for the extremely long comment lol.

As a Spyro fan who loves the original franchise and Reignited, I’m glad someone actually talked about Skylanders as a game series instead of being biased and ranting all day about Spyro’s drastic redesign. I will admit however that Spyro’s design indeed could have looked more appealing but it doesn’t automatically make a game bad. I’ve played every Skylanders game with the Spyro figure and I can confirm that it’s harmless. Far from great, but harmless.

I agree with everything you said, except for the final boss battle, I love the music and I find the Hydra to be a really challenging and intimidating foe (which compensates for Kaos tbh).

From someone who actually played 5 of the games, they're pretty fun. The only problem I have, is the pricing. $75 for the full game with 2-3 characters seems very cheap, but just wait for the next game to come out. Usually the pricing drops massively to $20. Or, just get the recent portal and a Spyro 1 character. Doing this allows you to play all the games for 5-8 bucks for the disks. Trap Team and Superchargers are my favorite out of the series, with Super Chargers allowing the user to buy 2 more vehicles to access almost everything in the game, the best story in the whole series, the vehicles actually being fun to use, and even slight character development for Kaos going against the darkness to rule Skylands himself, instead of destroying it. Trap Team for the villians being fun to use, like Wolfgang and PepperJack, the ability to nickname SnapShot, Progressive, and the short, yet fun levels. These games aren't without their flaws however. The characters seem expensive on their first day, but like the starter packs, just wait till you find them at Five n Below, where you can get a 3 pack for $5, or Gamestop where I saw a series 2 character for 99 cents. Super Chargers feel short for a game, which is extremely sad since it's my favorite out of the series. If you scratch your game's disk, you're basically fucked over. Some of the characters break pretty easily, and light core Jet-Vac doesn't even work anymore unless I bend him back a little. Spyro's redesign. Skylanders Academy. The fact that this scene doesn't contain a lap dance and the buissness aspect that you need to buy figures to access every single character in the game. But for the type of game Skylander is, it works. In conclusion: I loved the Skylander series when I was younger, and I kinda do today. They're aren't worth $75 though, so if you want to play, just wait until the next game to get a starter pack for $20.
