There are 49 Battalion Chiefs in the FDNY not including Rescue, Safety, Hazmat & Marine Battalions. Each Battalion Chief is designated a Response area and assigned companies within its battalion. Battalion 6 is in charge of Engines 5, 14, 33 & Ladders 3 & Tower Ladder 9. Battalion 6 is a 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD. A Battalion Chiefs main role is to supervise members at a scene and secure safety of members operating. They are to take charge over the scene until a Deputy Chief or Higher arrives on scene. All Battalions Chief went thru a Safety Course and have the ability to be a Safety Officer on the 2nd Alarm. The first arriving Battalion Chief is the Incident Commander of the Scene. On a 2nd Alarm there will be assigned 3 BCs. One for Firefighting, Next will be RUL which is Resource Unit Leader, and third will be a Safety Officer. 3rd Alarm gets one Fire firefighting, staging, and Air Recon. Battalion Chiefs are responsible for the manpower for next tour for the units they are responsible for. Almost all battalion chiefs carry the same equipment and are all staffed with a Firefighter aide as the chauffeur. A Set of Irons, Hook, TIC, Flash Lights, Gas Meters, Radiation Detection , Tablet, EFAS tablet with Radio, Water Rescue Kit, Sound Powered Phone with Reels, Post Radio, CO Fire Extinguisher, APR Masks, DOT Triangles, Flares, Tow Strap, Ropes, Spare SCBA Bottles, Jumper Cables, Administrative Paper Work, Clip Board, Command Sheets, white bag is the 10’ x 12’ Window Blanket for impacted fires, ERG Books & other miscellaneous stuff.

These are very enjoyable to watch. You must have an excellent reputation with FDNY to be able to get access to show us all the cool stuff they have. I'm sure it's not easy in this day and age. They must get a lot of people knocking on the door wanting to look at stuff.

A lot of respect for those who are managing a lot of tasks and responsibilities each day.What they do is enormous and most important, the lives of the men and women they lead each day is paramount.Among other things,this is a education for me today, Skyler about battalion chiefs.

Is the Aide's job a position, or is filled with guys on light duty due to injuries, etc.?

That’s great Skyler. Once again I will go back in time with a little FDNY history. The typical battalion vehicle in the 60s was a Dodge or Ford station wagon. It had 1 rotating beacon on the roof. On the front bumper there were two brackets. On one a mechanical siren was mounted sideways, and on the other a bell was placed. A pull cord went through the engine compartment to the inside of the vehicle to ring the bell. Basic equipment was carried before the days of modern electronics. Bunker coats( no bunker pants in those days) extinguisher, irons etc.Also books containing information that they have access to using the laptop today. Simple voice radio for communication.

Does the BC's Aide get selected by the BC or is it a rotation schedule for each FF? Any special training to become a BC Aide?
@SkylerFire
@SkylerFire Жыл бұрын
No training anyone but a probie can be a aide… usually the Battalion will pick someone and usually it’s a senior firefighter

I didn't know that battalion chief vehicles were so complex. I also didn't know there was a need for a BC to have an SCBA. I would think they wouldn't need to enter an IDLH environment.

@@SkylerFire Thank You Skyler, looking forward to the Field Comm and Division Chiefs Fleet Fridays. It is very different from Ontario Canada to FDNY. We have District Chiefs similar to your Battalion Chief's then Platoon Chiefs similar to your Division Chiefs, from there we go to Assistant Deputy Chief then to Deputy Chief then to the Chief.

Does the battalion chief not carry the command post table or accountability boards?
@SkylerFire
@SkylerFire Жыл бұрын
Divisions & Field Com carry the big command boards. All Battalions, Divisions and anyone that has a Department cell phone can see the mobile command board. Battalion chiefs can start it on the tablet. One day they are gonna do anyway with the command board cause everything will be on the tablet. They can put companies on any floor, rehab, fire victims there is a section for patients that EMS can see

I got on in 1980, and was in L-3 from May 83 till promotion 8/90. Lost a lot of friends and former probies who were in the house on 9/11. L-3 was active, but never got under # 31 on the Fire Bell listing. If only Sty-town and Peter Cooper had not been built. If anyone wants to read of that time my detailed work MY TURN ON THE FIRELINES 1980-2003 is still available.
