"THAT'S NOT HOW YOU MAKE STEEL!" Thanks to the paucity of corundum ore in Skyrim, this was my battlecry through pretty much the whole of my time playing Skyrim. Though apparently, the recipe was originally either twice the Iron Ore as needed to make Iron, or Iron Ore plus Charcoal, and it got dummed down on the assumption the average gamer didn't know what steel even was.

the corundum evaporatess off the alloy, but iron has memory so it remembers it had the corundum in it, which gives it the willpower to hit harder and longer. that also explains why steel doesn't have any sign of corundum's color. It's alternative metallurgy, ferreopathy.

I have a theory about the lack of spears in Skyrim: We all know that ore regrows at an impressive pace. But do we ever see trees regrow? It stand to reason, that trees regrow at a slower pace than ore veins. They need wood to built all sorts of tools and stuff for their houses, and yet, you find a lot more smithing shops in Skyrim that woodcutting mills. What if wood is simply the much more valuable ressource in that world? I mean, think about it, even if you pick up woodcutting yourself, a bit of firewood sells for more than iron ingots... Spears are too expensive to make, wood is too precious! :D

This was hilarious fun! but in TESO you do meet a Dwemer spectre (in VVardenfell) as well as Thaddeus Cosma an Imperial who we suspect (and Zenimax alludes to) of being a time traveler that lived with the Dwemer. The Dwemer were most likely not Dwarves like in traditional fantasy because in their name the "mer" part implies they are Elven in origin. Altmer, Dunmer, Orsimer, Bosmer, Falmer, Chimer (who the Dwemer supposedly resemble) and Dwemer are all names with Elven origins. The races of man just call them Dwarves because they lived underground. Though no one explains how the races of man understand what a dwarf is nor why they wouldn't just call them Dwemer as well. The Glass material in Skyrim is actually called Malachite which in real life is more akin to copper and was one of the first ores used to smelt copper. I think TES lore refers to it being more stone like and not related to actual glass, but equally as clear and reflective as green glass and also comes in many different colors. The green in the malachite ore of Skyrim's provinces is higher in copper oxide which can actually be toxic in higher concentrations. Yes, I am THAT person.

I think I’m so much more into the historical fiction aspects of Skyrim than the fantasy ones. At least in terms of weapons and armor. But to be fair… the “glass” armor could just be a special alloy of metal that exposed to extreme levels of radiation/magic to “purify” it and turn it clear. …or it’s just a really pretty crystalline metal the elves affectionately called “glass.” I mean… I like fantasy, but not when they throw logic and reason out the window! Skyrim is a classic and comes so close to having everything I could ever want in a video game. Closer than any other.

Hi Shad, I was watching a video on Skallgrim's channel and it made me think of a question. In a fight between a "warrior" or heavy armour build (not necessarily plate armour though) versus an "assassin" or lighter build, who would win? On the one hand, the heavy build has a two handed sword that is easy to control, but on the other hand, the lighter build has speed and possibly double wielding lighter blades (not necessarily daggers, but short swords or something). If you already have a video on this, which video? I'm very curious to know more.

There are two main theories as to why the lost race of elves are called dwarves. 1) The first group to encounter the Dwarves were the giants of Skyrim and a 5’11” looks small and dwarfed by 11’ to 13’ giants. 2) It was a miss translation of the name,” Dwemer” . Dwemer was incorrectly translated to mean ,” Lesser Elves” making people think they were small and when in their reality,” Dwemer “ means,” Deep Elf” or ,” Deep Folk” because of their subterranean society.

Bethesda toyed with the idea of adding spears to Skyrim but never went through with it. I guess they thought there was enough weapon diversity already, and that adding another weapon type wasn't worth the time and effort needed to integrate and balance them. If you look up "Skyrim Game Jam 2011" you can see some clips of a spear they added into the game. Quite a few of the pieces of content showcased there was either added to the game via updates or popped up as mods not long after.

In the game jam video (from where they let the developers do whatever they wanted for one week after Skyrim launched) they showed in game footage of someone using a spear. About minute 2 in the attached video link. Problem was it looked stiff and janky because the person who they used for the motion capture didn't really know how to fight with a spear, just do flashy Wushu stunts, and they hadn't really adjusted the hit boxes for the longer reach. So between that and most people not really thinking spears are cool it was never worth Bethesda's time to make it work. 2:44 note from a programmer (not a skyrim developer): ya know most developers opt to standardize there assets to save space, however there are some ways to make variants. doing so in 3d is harder due to a 3d mesh having numerous polygons, the hardware limitations like memory, graphics capabilities and storage, so rather than risk slowed framerate and resolution drops most developers would standardize weapons. While its criticized often, i dont see many developers opting to go down that difficult route, although it DOES sound fun to try!

Well that's possible with Skyrim. You just need to learn how to model and texture them with Blender and Photoshop then use Creation Kit to put them into the game first. Truth be told, no game offers this simply because of that fact... weapons and armour are textured 3D models, there would be no way to design them within a game engine because they're not built for that purpose. Any game that let's you make "customisable weapons" are really just letting you tack a bunch of pre-designed parts onto a base model, and apply pre-designed skins or RBG colours to their surface areas, there's no real ground-up design going on where you're in full control. I don't think what you want is impossible, just extremely unlikely ever to happen because of the work involved and the experience required to use the software that creates those things. We're extremely fortunate that Skyrim has such an amazing modding community.

@@silverjohn6037 You could figure out a way to balance spears like have them be unenchantable. Or just have fantasy combat elements like spears being able to be knocked aside or being ineffective at close range. For example in Skyrim melee the strat is always to lunge forward, strike and move back before the enemy attacks keeping your distance. Against a polearm user the strategy could then be to stay as close as possible to them which leads them to switch to a sidearm since he just doesn't have the room to attack. Shield and spear however I would expect to work similarly to vanilla. Also polearms could be balanced to be mostly useful for horseback fighting instead of in melee like in Warband for example they could lack decent damage on foot unless the player has leveled enough to get knockback and getting a damage modifier for having momentum on a horse.

Natural glass (and some of artifitiant ones) in other hand can be extreemly sharp, because of it's stiffnes partly. Problem is - fragility. That's the reason we started to use metall. But I recomend you to read something big about it.

On one hand, I found this hilarious, on the other, I genuinely wanted to see Shad review the practicality of Skyrim's weapons.

I'm obviously not an expert, but Skyrim's weaponry seems pretty tame to me. The more extravagantly designed weapons usually justify their existence in the sense that the materials used to make them are inherently magical. Sure, Daedric weapons look overdesigned and overly edgy, but they're quenched in the heart of a Daedra, which probably gives them magical properties that compensate for the design weirdness.

Shad, this was hilarious as hell! I'm not sure if it was the effect of you standing there, or just the pure sarcasm or what, but i absolutely loved this....also, the bit about the dragon bone weapons was great...and did you really call out daedric for to much edge? Pure comedy gold start to finish

I bet you really like Elder Scrolls Online style system, right? For those that didn't play it: when you craft an item, you can choose a style you want to craft it in. Those are cultural styles (so Imperial, Nordic, Dark Elven, Daedric, etc.) but there are also some more unique ones (though I can't name any from the top of my head - I didn't get any of those since at least part of them is from premium cash shop). It makes it so that you can actually stick to your chosen backstory/fashion of your character. There are also some small differences between tiers (low vs mid vs high lvl item) in most styles as well.

3:59 Shad has figure out why dwarves are the Meta of miners and metal craftsmen. "By that logic you should technically be able to plant ore, and just and let it grow have like a garden of ore. That's the most dwarf thing I've ever heard, that is Metal!" 🔄💎+⚒=🔄⚔️ (I couldn't find a infinity emoji) However Elves still retain there place as better weapon smiths than the dwarves of Tamriel, admittedly if only marginally given the damage and weight differences. I think the Lord of the Rings still sets the best metric for this difference in performance. 🧝🏻‍♂️👑🗡 Shad, also my opinion of glass weapons aligns with yours, however they have had their places in history. This includes ancient knives made from obsidian (basically sharp rocks), swords in South America with wood shafts and multiple blade sections, and even glass daggers that were used by the Venetians throughout the Renaissance, these were even poisoned. Ask Metatron about it, I'm having a hard time trying to get historical references off the internet. Mostly modern shopping crap keeps coming up.

The steel ingot smelting makes more sense when you remember its iron and corundum ore that goes in, not ingots. AFAIK theres no way, without mods, to make one ingot out of another ingot.

2:30 Already addressing one of my biggest gripes. Thankfully ESO really does fix this. I absolutely love crafting in ESO. For example, I really wanted Oblivion style ebony armor in this game. Even Morrowind had better looking ebony. (Overlooking the fact that ebony IRL is wood that the fretboard of my guitar is made of lol)
