One of my headcannons when it comes to the overswinging is that in Souls games (Elden Ring included) many of the enemies you face are more akin to objects rather than human opponents. These overswings may be telegraphed and leave you open against an intelligent human opponent, but when you are fighting hulking masses of flesh, monstrous animals, and literal walking TREES then I think a bit of overswing is expected.

But when there is a 6m tall superhuman in golden armor standing in front of you the answer isnt to give them smol strikes, you go all in and hit them with everything you can manage in that short of a time, you SLAM it into them

For the heavy swings for some of the attacks, I like to imagine that the reason they're so telegraphed is because in the world of Elden Ring you'll be using these to kill huge monsters half the time, as opposed to intelligent knights, so you could get away with a bit of telegraphing since you're just trying to put as much weight behind the swings as possible.

You should do an analysis of Elden Ring's castles next! There's a nice mix of history and fantasy that I feel would make for a really nice series of videos. I remember walking through the entrance of Castle Morne on the south of the Weeping Peninsula and looking at how defensible the entrance is with a walled corridor and a lift that can simply be called up and nobody is coming in through there. Also the machicolations are fake, but so are the windows (since you don't get to go inside that castle), so that's likely meant to save a few polygons and you can assume they're meant to be real.

As a souls fan I must say I'm a bit disappointed by the progressive loss of realism of the architecture in fromsoft games. Elden Ring is full of architectural elements (castle walls, towers, houses, roofs) that would be inaccessable by design. For istance is very common to find walls with battlements (so intended to be walked on) between two towers with no doors on either tower. In Stormveil castle you can do platforming on roofs and balconies that wouldn't make any sense irl. Please not that my complaint is only about aesthetics, not gameplay: not every architectural element needs to be accessible in-game, but putting a fake door/trapdoor would go a long way to make these elements more belivable. Demon's souls was incredible in this reguard: especially in Boletaria things made a lot of architectural sense. Even shortcuts were well integrated: the shortcut in stonefang tunnel is a lift that would be used by the miners to move materials, and so on.

My only defense of their animations is that sometimes they swing low and in to the ground because Souls games (I'm just collectively calling all of them that, you know what I mean) actually have a non-insignificant amount of enemies low to the ground. Rats, slimes, dogs and even prone enemies and when the player swings and any standard weapons wielded by an NPC, it all hits based on collision. And this is just speculation but they probably overswing because testing said that felt good. I wouldn't doubt that because the games have been praised for how you have to commit to your swings and how heavy things feel.

im gonna be honest, thrusting/lunging with daggers looks brain-dead stupid because it has no reach, you say its a deadly way of attacking but i see it as a pathetic way of attacking if we put it into context within a medieval setting where everyone has a sword, spear, or any other far reaching weapon. lunging or thrusting with a dagger is only deadly today because nobody carries a sword with them anymore. for the sake of argument you can lunge in game if you sprint before pressing R2 (not gonna bother saying the pc controls because nobody in their right mind would play this game without a console controller) the broadsword, longsword, and shortsword is animated in a way to depict that the user is not as skilled in it as you are assuming they are. historical accuracy may be important to you, but PVP balance is faaaaar more important for the developers because its easy to fix damage values, but much harder and costlier to replace weapon animations on a whim. "european swordsmanship has such a specific and sophisticated technique".. sure, if you were the son of a high ranking noble with formal training maybe, but most footsoldiers were mostly trained just to know which end of the sword to grab onto, and that's about it. they were cannon fodder and conscripts, nothing more. i think koei tecmo helped with fromsoftware's development of elden ring, which explains why japanese weapons exist in the game and why theyre animated well. i also think the greatswords/colossal swords are animated very well, because that basic btch greatsword/colossal sword is nothing compared to the "Guts" Greatsword which uses the same animations, DO NOT use the piece of trash newbie greatsword/colossal sword as a reference to base the animation on, 99% of all greatswords/colossal swords in the game are way bigger and heavier than this rinky dink toy sword. i feel like the clubs are meant to have an extremely simple fighting style (or rather no fighting style full stop) is because its an ooga booga weapon, literally nothing more than a "return to monke" meme weapon to joke about and never take seriously, or scream at the top of your lungs when some smurf somehow kills you with one. the mace is better and similar to the sword style but i do wish it had attacks that focus on crushing the torso or skull since these weapons were historically designed to make plate-mail the knights tomb by collapsing it into their body. if the blunt force trauma doesnt kill them, the unending torment of being wrapped in a fatally crushed tin-can will. i like the flail, mainly because i haven't seen a single game with a flail that is actually animated. as for its practical applications at smashing margit the fell omen's face in, or denting the scales of a dragon, yeah... nope.. you'll just be asking them to shove this weapon inside you while you beg for mercy. i think the reason the spiked ball of the flail sometimes stops abruptly is to prevent the time honored haunt of having a simulated physics model go absolutely berserk when its physics dont have any sort of limiters. (like most early 2000's/2010's games that had boob physics, or cloth physics, or hair physics) i think the halberd and spear is absolutely perfect where it is right now, asking the devs to add unnecessary tweaks to its animation is pointless, whats the point in smacking the butt stock/pommel of a halberd at a dragon? absolutely none. case of point. the tarnished that we play as likely doesn't even have formal training so most of their technique is depicted to be self taught, just be satisfied with that will you. every single buckler in the game will not block 100% of the damage, why? because its designed specifically to be gimped, some kite shields can block 100% of the damage but you lose stamina equal to the damage you should have recieved, it you lose all your stamina your guard breaks, and if the damage exceeds your stamina pool by orders of magnitude then the damage will bypass your shield completely and kill you. bucklers and kite shields are designed to be quick and agile, the bucklers excel at parrying, while the kite shields excel at blocking light attacks and arrows, both shields are absolutely trash against magic unless you cast "scholars shield", and both shields are quite light which is great for people not focusing on strength/endurance builds, but the consequence is that they have very little poise, which means that even if an attack doesnt go through it will absolutely bruise you arm and hand, and its a trivial matter to guard break you. this is why larger shields exist in the game, they are much much heavier but offer much more poise and can block attacks from even the largest bosses. and of course you move the buckler/shield away before striking because how else are you supposed to see? the buckler/shield covers more than 40% of your vision and it would be stupid to attack blindly. they also do this to prevent players from hiding behind their shield 100% of the time, imagine striking while your shield is up in a pvp focused videogame, reddit flame-wars will ensue, it does make sense for rapiers/spears though, but it has a glaring weakness which balances everything out. (just roll behind them and back-stab) tower shields and great shields dont need to be moved because all of them are positioned in a way that still lets the players character see in front of them. the uchigatana (and other blood loss meta weapons) are balanced well enough if you actually remember to make some consumables that mitigate blood loss. its not broken as long as you're not a bad player, which sadly most people are.. i believe there are also spells and incantations that can mitigate this debuff as well. i disagree with the light bow vs heavy bow argument because while light bows like the recurve bow can absolutely get similar poundage as a longbow or a warbow, you have to take into account that a longbow or warbow can draw a "war arrow" which is significantly heavier than a typical arrow, some much later bows even go as far as to draw arrows that are similar to lances (quick nod to the "dragonslayer greatbow" from dark souls 3 which literally launches a lightning imbued lance to shred the thick virtually indestructible scales of elder dragons) play Elden Ring to completion before you form an opinion on every weapon, for all our sanity's as souls veterans.

14:08 It would actually be interesting for RPG to include the skill and strength into the animations. For example if you have poor skill with swords the character will just swing it wildly and as your skill increases the actual animated swings become better and more controlled as well. Strength could make the swings slower and more clumsy overall if your character is too weak to properly wield the weapon and if the weapon is way too heavy the character could barely swing it (imagine a kid trying to swing a massive hammer). It would probably take quite a bit of work but the end result would be amazing if properly done.

Gothic 1 & 2, actually do have something quite similar to what you describe. In both games when you first start out with no skill with weapons, your character swings them somewhat wildly and can only chain a few hits together. As your character's skill grows with weapons the attack animations, even the standard "wielding" animation, change to much more controlled and precise strikes that can be chained together a good number of times. Though, they are more "stylized" animations rather than "realistic" but, it still gets the point across that your character has gotten better at wielding weapons.

It's an unnecessary addition that isn't worth the effort you have to put in and all the variables you have to take into account. How do I make the animations flow naturally when the player swings? How do I decide which frame the physics take control of the ball and chain and which frame the actual hand animation starts so everything looks plausible? How do I tweak the physics properly so that the ball and chain don't just break and look silly at random moments because I simply fell from a high enough distance? How do I incorporate these things into the player death animation, let alone animations like running, blocking or falling? The only games I've seen use flails as an actual weapon choice are Chivalry: Medieval Warfare, and For Honor. Summed up, it rounds out to this; It's a very asinine and tedious thing to do, and it's easy to screw up. And when you screw up a weapon that has physics, people tend to point it out and focus on it rather than the other aspects of the game that were actually fun and not as tedious to make, such as story, atmosphere, characters or world design.

(game developer here) from a game design standpoint a lot of these inaccuracies are not just for telegraphing but for making the attacks more forgivingly connect to enemies at all, whilst a real swordsman is able to produce quite swift efficient motions and hit targets on the scale of centimetres there's no way for a player to input that much information easily, the player is more doing hits with precision on the scale of metres, by having wider attacks (and more swings instead of stabs) it allows players to be less accurate and still get hits at a variety of angles in one button press. elden ring would be a lot less fun if we were missing every swing we took lol! :D

Regarding the shields not blocking 100% physical damage. You picked the only kite shield in the entire game that doesn't block 100% physical damage. Because its made of wood. There are smaller shields than that which still block 100% of physical damage. In Elden Ring the rule of thumb seems to be if its larger than a round shield and its made of metal, its blocks 100% physical damage.

The thing about crossbows being easier to use than bows is kind of represented in game. Crossbows have no stat scaling, but bows do. So as your strength and dexterity increase, your bow damage will continue to improve, but the crossbow will remain the same. So for highly skilled characters, bows become the better choice, but crossbows are often better for weaker (less "trained") characters.

I think the main reason for overswinging the "straight swords" and "greatswords" is the hitbox of the weapon. Without overswinging the zone you hit enemies with would be like a very small cone in front of the character (maybe less then a 45° cone) and gameplay-wise that would be really tedious, especially when you fight a group of enemies, whereas with overswinging the hitbox cone is like 90° to even 180° wide.
@SleeplessBanjos

I would prefer a smaller hitbox if the weapon felt lighter and could swing faster (and cost an appropriate amount of stamina). Even if you needed more focus, it would be shorts frames for dodging and parrying, which is what a shorter sword should excel at (As well as comfortably using a shield).

Yeah, I'm certain it's a videogame mechanics thing. Not only important for fast-moving enemies or groups, but the combat in general - the player *can't* have that amout of fine control of a character unless the game is built specifically for duels, with completely different mechanics in and out of combat. The overswing makes it easier to hit enemies mid-dodge or without targetting, so these weapons *feel* easier to use.

27:45 Sorry if there's a bunch of people already saying this but I just wanted to mention that categorization is probably for gameplay reasons. You're able to powerstance almost every type of weapon as long as they fit in the same "category". So for example, you can powerstance that club and that mace since they're both hammers, which I know because I did that very combination for a few minutes while testing out different builds. It helps keep it clear which weapons you can combine so you don't have to keep a mental checklist of "clubs go with maces, arming swords go with short swords but not thrusting swords, this lucerne doesn't work with other hammers despite being a hammer because it uses a move set similar to the halberd..." and so on and so forth.

In real life if you were a knight with a zweihander, you would cut them apart in seconds no problem. Arms, legs, gone. Kind of funny how FromSoft actually take two-hands-thing into account in a very specific way: Two-handing a weapon actually doubles your effective strength stat, thus increasing the damage dealt through scaling and also allowing you to wield weapons that you don't meet the strength requirements for. A pity that they don't consistently have two-handed movesets that really reflect the fact that you'd have more control with two hands.

7:15 the explanation is fairly simple: Cutting, slashing and thrusting/piercing are different damage types. For game balance reasons you generally need to pick one. Most daggers are "slashing" because that makes them effective against unarmored foes and weak against armor.
@wombat4191
@wombat4191 2 жыл бұрын
But the funny thing is, that is the exact opposite of what daggers are. They are supposed to be good against armor but with very limited range. Why would you want to use such a small blade for fast slashing when you can use light swords for that (or realistically should be able to)? I don't see any reason why daggers have to be slashing weapons for balance, instead of what they are actually good at.
@Wyzai
@Wyzai 2 жыл бұрын

@@Wyzai Yes, they are god against armor because of their precision at close range, allowing you to hit those weak spots. And stabs are still very effective against many types of armor, just not plate. And none of this changes the fact that daggers aren't slashing weapons. In fact, some weapons that can be classified as daggers do not even have a sharp edge to cut with.
@wombat4191
@wombat4191 2 жыл бұрын
@The RedCabbage Wouldn't going through poise be balanced by the short range? Besides, I'm not saying that daggers should just go through all armor and have huge poise damage. Furthermore, the blades are short, so of course you can't do that much damage to big enemies, even if you get through their armor. But yes, I think stabbing with daggers should melt through some poise. As for bleeding, what is this assumption that daggers should be better at inflicting bleeding status that some other blades?
@wombat4191
@wombat4191 2 жыл бұрын
@The RedCabbage But it's a game, which means that any mechanic can be balanced with correct parameters. Make them not inflict status so easily or not break so much poise that they would be broken. Or make something else balance them out, whatever. The point is that stabbing wouldn't need to make daggers unbalanced. Of course I personally have got nothing against the game depicting daggers as slashing weapons. Of course, From Software is in no way obliged to make their game realistic, and I believe looking cool or powerful is higher in their priority list, which is totally okay. But the video was about how the weapon usage could be more realistic, and I'm just arguing against the unviability of that realism.

These movesets still have plenty of telegraph for readability in gameplay, but they look far more real than all the slamming the weapon into the ground nonsense. I think the overswinging especially is baked into the game's mechanics and balance. Every action has a windup, attack and then recovery frames so that each action has a cost to it. That overswing is when you get punished by an enemy if you get too greedy or don't time your attacks right. Also for the heavier weapons, they want those weapons to have longer animations because they hit harder and cause more stance break damage. It's necessary for balance, so I doubt they'll make it too accurate to how it's practically used.

In defense of the weighty and overswung attacks with these swords, generally, these characters are not attacking normal soldiers, they are fighting giant dragons, giants and mythic creatures. If you were fighting a dragon, you'd want to put all of your weight behind that swing... Also the overswing is meant to allow you to combat groups by slashing multiple enemies at once. And Fromsoft games rely on the philosophy of telegraphed attacks and timing, you commit to every attack and the aim of the lengthy animations is to lock you into an attack and punish you if you mistime it. Plus some animations just look cooler exaggerated.. I can agree that the light attacks should be like in real life but for the heavy attacks, they should exaggerate the weight and strength of the weapon, because otherwise it feels "floaty"..

I may be completely out of touch with this question. Also, I don't really think they were going for historical accuracy as the game is totally on the fantasy side of things. I believe they mostly wanted the animation to represent the amount of damage that the weapon can do and counterbalance that with the speed at which it can be wielded rather than trying to realistically depict it. Still, exciting video to watch nonetheless!

To the first part, about the animations overswinging: This, too, is gameplay related. Enemies come in different shapes and sizes and - of course - in groups. While some people may dispute it, the hit detection in Soulsborne and Elden Ring by extension is quite precise. That means that the motions you showed around the 11:08 have far smaller "hit areas" (except for the final slash) than the overswung motions in the game. Your motions implemented in the game would lead to far more misses against smaller enemies and less hits against groups of enemies thereby making the game both more difficult and frustrating having your character continually miss. Furthermore, you only have two types of basic attacks, light and heavy. Ideally, both types of attack and their combos should be useful against all types of enemies, thus making wide swings a better option. Having different combos for different types of enemies would probably allow the introduction of more realistic moves, but that sounds like a coding nightmare.

The hit detection on melee certainly is precise, and its that precision that makes me hate how the Zweihander handles. (Try using it to break glowing skulls. - No rolling. Only reliable way is to do jump attacks) This might sound specific but, the Zweihander has the tendency to knock down enemies and it doesn't have a good way to hit low to the ground enemies straight in front of you, besides that jump attack. Side note: The hit detection with ranged is not nearly as accurate, or technically is actually too accurate and suffers from game logic problems. Play a mage for a fair amount of time and you will notice sometimes with an enemy running towards (specially faster enemies or horseback) you your magic attack will go right through them without actually causing damage. This might be a game logic issue because collision detection happens every 1/60th of a second, and if a projectile travels further then the size of it's hitbox in 1 frame, it can phase through an object. (Think: a 1 pixel 'bullet' moving 8 pixels per frame, has the chance to phase through a 3 pixel wide wall) - I don't think this ever happens with targets standing still, but can happen with smaller faster moving targets charging right towards the projectile.

@@-DeScruff just a question: does lowering the camera in this game still have you swing lower, like in ds3? i haven't yet had a chance to test that out as with the weapns i use(mainly greatsword and straight swords) i tend to be able to hit pretty much anything i lock-on to.

Shad you're missing the key concept that goes into how the devs animate these weapons. They didn't make a mistake or not know how the weapon realistically would be used, they made an INTENTIONAL choice to sacrifice realism in support of gameplay. Tempo is the most important thing in how fromsoft designs its combat. Many of these weapons, spears and smaller sword categories especially in real life are utilized much more quickly and nimbly than the devs want them to in game, to perserve the desired tempo. If the zweihander could be swung in game as quickly as you swing it in real life that would cause serious balance issues beacause of the damge it deals, the heavy meaty overswings are conveying the weapons power as it has a higher base damage and strength scaling than smaller swords. The overswinging also helps to cleave multiple enemies for when you are surrounded or corned which often happens. Realistic medieval combat in a game WOULD be neat but simply does not fit into the fromsoft formula, so realism is PURPOSELY sacrificed by the devs to preserve gameplay. Anyways sorry for the rant, I'm glad you're enjoying the game and would like to see a video on the more ridiculous weapons.

Which... just makes it sound like you somehow missed the key concept of this video: applying the real-world logic to the game. OBVIOUSLY there are sacrifices in realism done for style in video games, Shad even straight out says it!

Even then why would the devs make the o-katana so much better than the european equivalents? Clearly you can find a middle ground between gameplay and realism without completely chucking away how the weapons would have actually been utilized by a skilled fighter.

Amazing video and yes I'm no weapons expert by any stretch of the imagination but you can definitely tell and feel what's real and what's over exaggerated when handling the weapons. I specifically avoid the more lumbering over swung and clumsy weapons because it's just too impractical! Thanks man, this was awesome!

Unfortunately this kind of thing has become so prevalent that I feel like a game that realistically depicts great swords would have complaints about being “floaty” and “unrealistic”.

The Drakeblood Greatsword in DS3 had a more realistic two handed R1 moveset, and I'm wondering if there's some that still has that moveset, since they've added movesets from nearly all the games. Still a lot of overswing, but a much more skilful looking moveset with a return to a guard position

FromSoft always intentionally included that shield mechanic, that they get lowered while attacking with a non-thrusting weapon. It's their way of balancing them and giving certain weapon types their niches. It is unrealistic, yeah, but intended. Btw, really liked the video, I'd love to see a 2nd round when you get more/all weapons.
