Can you imagine gene modified trees specifically designed for buildings like this? We are probably going to see some fairly outrageous properties of these new materials in the coming decades.

It isn't simply about the plant itself, it is the idea that nature and man made stuctures can be combined together and creat something more effective. The inplications are endless. More over, it gives people the mindset of nature is part of us and we are a part of nature and not isolated from it.

Cities could have skyscapping greenhouses and produce all of their food locally no matter the region or climate. People who talk about "limited resources" have very low limits of imagination and thought.
@niBBunn
@niBBunn 6 жыл бұрын
In case you didn't know, skyscraper greenhouses already exists, and they're called aeroponic gardens. Yes, what you said is right, climate in these buildings is a controllable factor. However, you really need to think deeper and do research. The initial set-up costs for large-scale aeroponics are insanely high, because you need the equipments (pumps, lights, air-conditioning). All conditions must be closely monitored, such as lighting, oxygen, quality of nutrient solutions. Furthermore, these plants survival depends on those pumps because if there is a power outage for just a few hours, they would surely die. It is not something that would happen in nature, because nutrients are relatively infinite in the soil. The lack of micro-organisms having a symbiotic relationship is a problem in aeroponics, so it definitely costs a lot to simulate the conditions in nature. Dipping the roots in nutrient solution is not ideal for aeroponics because you'd have to replace it very often, and that's expensive because you cannot simply dispose of it just by dumping it in the sink. That's only going to make algae grow everywhere. You need to properly clear it which is quite the hassle.

yup....as we have covered the globe, our best option is going up...I think going too far down we risk messing with our surface's stability...maybe a little is fine...but to go up we have a LOT of room....just build VERY sturdy, tall and wide enough for good stability, maybe even in pyramidal/cone fashion would be best.. just construct in such a way that covers most of the potential hazards you could face.... I think energy should be produced in the sea and desert in the forms of solar, maybe thermal pump pipes running from icy top mountains down to hot desert floors that make energy non stop.....SO many potential ways to do it better than we do..

This won't become the norm ever in the near future; people are ignoring that this is so much more expensive on the user side it is not even worth it. For anyone who has had to keep wooden structures you know how vulnerable they are. They rott, build moss, can be eaten up by thermites, can splinter, etc. This requires lots of maintenance to counter, which in the world of business is time and money you cannot waste. It is a great idea, I totally would love to see something like this, but it doesnt translate well onto reality for the moment.

Alejandro Planas there is moss on top of your brick roof too, and it doesnt bother. And no, it wont rot, and wont get eaten up (maybe by vegans) There arr wooden buildings that are hundreds of years old that are still perfect today, so I dont see why this wouldnt work
@alejandror.planas9802
@alejandror.planas9802 6 жыл бұрын
Well based on personal experience I can assure you wood rots, and is eaten up by thermites, has happened multiple times where I live, and I live in the city. The buildings which are made out of wood and last until today demand immense amounts of work to be kept standing, e.g. The Forbidden Palace faces complete make-overs every couple of years, and its not even functional anymore. There are solutions to these problems though, I can think of a few that could even be implemented from my end, but there isn't enough adoption of this style of construction to justify the creation of a new product just for this.

I have a suggestion: use wood (obviously cross sectioned composited resin inside) but then coated with carbon fiber from the outside so that it LITERALLY becomes as strong as steel or even more than that. It will also be cheaper and environmentally friendly if we plant a new tree for every tree being cut down. You might now know about this but the world is actually running out of usable sand (the type of sand which is used for production of concrete which is solely seashore sand).

We had one of these green buildings (on a smaller scale) where I live. It was great for about 3 years. Then the watering system in the walls started to break down and the "green wall" died. Shortly thereafter they had to rip the rest of the facade away to repair water damage from leaks in the irrigation system that had caused major issues with mold and rot. They elected to replace the green walls with normal glass and steel. Amazingly, the overall cost of operating the building went way down and the employees inside stopped complaining of frequent headaches and respiratory issues that had been caused by the mold and mildew from the leaking irrigation system. I love the idea of green buildings covered in plants, but understand that they come with a HEFTY operational cost and can raise issues that can make the building itself unfit for habitation due to mold and mildew.

Smartinator Plus Plants require roots, roots that dig into the material they are growing in. Unless you want plants that die the moment the weather shifts you want to use decently hardy plants, and that generally means roots that dig in pretty deep. Though sure, I am sure some sort of genetic manipulation might be found as an solution to create a decent balance for both low deterioration of the structure and the hardiness of the plants. But I still think we aren't there just yet, so caution should be our best friend. Regarding the wood structures... There genetic engineering "might" help make the wood slightly hardier than it is, but considering that it is dead organic material I cannot fathom that the maintenance cost for such a structure u is cheaper than that of the concrete in the long run. Though I do hope it will be. Either way... considering we have been genetically manipulating plants for over 30 years now and not yet found solution I am going to remain cautiously optimistic if ye don't mind. ;P

I like the idea but, you have to use more steel and concrete to support the weight of all the plants growing on the building and all of the water necessary to keep the plants alive. These sort of plants will also attract birds who will nest and insects that will eat the plants and add to the weight of the plants.

One possible advantage to having plants integrated into a building, depending on how it's done and what plants are used, is a stronger building that is less susceptible to wind and ground movement. Plants are usually pretty strong, and taking advantage of both their natural ability to climb and intertwine, as well as the resistance to breaking or being uprooted could possibly increase the overall strength of the building well beyond normal design standards. Imagine having trees grow around and into support columns for multi-story buildings. As long as the trees are alive, it's likely they would provide a stronger structure in combination than even steel reinforced concrete by itself.

Forests aren't good sources of fixing "new" greenhouse gas content. Most of the world's co2 is mainly absorbed by plankton in the sea. Remember land is only 30% of the planet and forests are only a small part of the land.

The problem with harvesting wood is that we are getting rid of our "old-growth forests" which many species of insects and plants depend on. To be able to keep the balance, we should only harvest the forests which we plant. However, I do not see many talk about this. I know that we are trying to save our old forests here in Sweden but we only have 25% left.

Modern, *cross-laminated bamboo beams* and panels are stronger than steel. They can last longer than concrete too, because concrete cracks with age. Only concrete with glass-fiber could be comparable, but not better, because bamboo panels have stronger fiber, if fabricated well. The fabricated wooden and bamboo panels and beams will be a huge market, because they are easier to process during construction, which makes construction more flexible.

Broad Group which has built factory mass produced skyscrapers has a new construction innovation - Core Tubular Steel Slabs (CTS). * CTS are 8 to 20 times lighter than reinforced concrete * CTS are 100 times more corrosion resistant than carbon steel * CTS able to withstand temperatures 300 degrees celsius higher than carbon steel The 6th generation BSB features a stainless steel panel clip diameter 16~32mm thin-wall core tubes, employing a special vacuum brazing assembly line which reduces cost and enables mass production. A few decades ago, it was popular to have central atriums. Unfortunately, it turned out that having that central green area created a chimney effect in fires. These "green" ideas look great but seems to do little in terms of fire breaks. Sheath a skyscraper with a greenhouse shroud creates another fire chimney. These green areas need to be broken up and not connected.

My sister owns a five-story wooden frame building that was built in the 1840s. No rot. In Europe, there are wooden frame buildings that are two, three, four times that old. No rot. Unless it gets wet and stays wet, wood will last a VERY long time.

What about old growth trees? Wouldn’t using Hemp/bamboo that grows quickly with minimal energy be even better to include in the equation? Defining the term renewable is necessary. If a tree takes decades to mature that is not necessarily renewable or ecological. If the root system is required for erosion deflection, again, these factors must be considered.

I actually made a presentation on this topic about how mankind uses nature's pattern of creation to create infrastructure, buildings and all sorts of stuff regarding that matter. Some building designs resemble Bee Hives and more. This is really interesting, and I predicted that in the future, we can use nature as an artificial product to enhance upcoming techonlogy. It's also true because lately, we've been creating and using certain products that work similarly in nature but just with a few tweaks. this indeed the next frontier in construction and innovative technology.
