when maria sharapova won wimbledon just one month into her 17th birthday, she had the perfect preparation; she had won at edgbaston a week or two before on grass, while at wimbledon she avoided top seeds at the start of the tournament & played opponents who got gradually better, so that by the semi final, where she played linsey davenport, sharapova's game had improved & the occasion & level of play did not come as a shock to her; this held her in good stead for the final, where she comfortably defeated serena williams! emma raducanu almost followed the same route as maria sharapova by having to play in qualifying to make the first round - maria played edgbaston; the level of her opponents gradually increased, so that by the time she played chang, who had beaten her a few weeks earlier, emma's game had improved & she comfortably beat her; it was not until the semis at the us open that emma played a seed of note, ie, sakkari, who had played so well at the french open! again, raducanu's game & confidence had improved so much, that she comfortably beat the greek player, who may well have won the encounter in an earlier round; leyla fernandez, probably had a more difficult draw & had beaten better players than emma but against that she played her semi final first; leyla was possibly fortunate to make the final as she won a few tie breaks which could have gone anyway, while raducanu made it through without a single tie break. the fact that emma had beaten leyla by two sets to love, albeit 3 years previously, added to the confidence she had gained, made winning a lot easier for the brit.
@normansmithers44653 жыл бұрын
@@doommonger7784 yes! i'd forgotten belinda bencic but sakkari is a better player than her! sakkari made round 2 at wimbledon while bencic lost in the first round, which meant radacanu went further than them both; in the french open, sakkari made the semi finals, so why she wasn't higher than the swiss girl i'm not sure! certainly, based on grand slams, it didn't seem right.
