I remember watching the match live and thinking how the players didn't seem to have the bit between their teeth and any confidence or conviction to win. All they had to do was draw to stay up. I felt Shearer had did what he could in the 8 games or so he had in charge. After they conceded they never really threatened or moved the ball forward effectively to get a goal back. Two draws and a win was not enough from the 8 games- but they should have beaten Portsmouth instead of drawing which would have been enough to keep them up, if the rest of the results remained the same. Shearer wanted the job long before the terrible hand he was given. Still, it wasn't quite a relegation shock in the same vein as Leeds or West Ham. The players which were at West Ham went onto bigger things, 6 of which featured in the first teams of the champions league final in 2008. Actually, 3 of the Leeds players which were relegated also got relegated with Newcastle in 2008 in James Milner, Mark Viduka and Alan Smith.. They also had the likes of Owen, Duff, Obefemi Martins, Shay Given, Jose Enrique, Andy Carrol (albeit very young), Joey Barton (ok he's more a familiar/notorious name than a big one) and Kieron Dyer. Scrap that, it was up there with those two.

Won't get much more honest than that. Don't see players acting like this now a days.

Now you know why Villa players celebrated staying up, did you want our Manager to look like this, 11 years and still sobbing🤣

As in the season Newcastle first went down? Villa were not a relegation contender that season

Thing is he used to sit in the pundits saying how he’d do things different if he was the manager. He got offered the job and turned it down then offered it later and fucked it up, notice how he doesn’t slag managers off now, neither does Gary neville.... harder than it looks ehh👍
