Excellent walk through and explanations! Your discussion on airframe fatigue needs to be brought up more often. So many modelers in all areas don't consider it when doing inspections of their aircraft. Different construction will absolutely affect this and longevity. Great job all the way around!
@ModelAV8RChannel
@ModelAV8RChannel 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks very much David! I've found a lot of modelers don't inspect their planes period. You have to with a Freestyle/3D plane or it will bite you eventually. I actually perform annuals on my planes at specific flight number increments for each type based on use/stress. It helps my planes are in a climate controlled hangar too...that is a blessing. Extreme temperature changes over the year in storage (like in a garage in Ga.) can really add wear to an air frame...especially balsa planes.

The flying was incredible and so was the camera work from Heidi. The sequences and transitions were smooth especially the ke spin, into parachute, into harrier (that was smooooooth). By far my favorite video of yours and an excellent note taking tool for all 3D pilots including me. Your channel is growing fast and with top notch , excellently made content like this, you will be up there with the big rc youtubers soon! Another very nice video, cool plane but I often wondered about how the foam would hold up to continuous flights. most of my planes see 300+ flights in a year if its something i really enjoy flying. I bet you get a 60" EF next year. I love my 60" EF Extra 300 V1, if i ever replaced it i am not sure what i would get, I really like the new NG Extra 300 but skywing make some nice bigger planes also. Hope you and Heidi have a very Merry Christmas. We look forward to the next video.

Would polyacrylic add to much weight if you painted air frame for strength an would it add enough strength?
@ModelAV8RChannel
@ModelAV8RChannel 4 ай бұрын
It will add some weight without really adding any strength that matters with this particular plane. It can handle the flight forces fine, and what makes it weaken over time is internal...not external. For the best flight performance on a 3D plane...leave it light.

Couple years late but i just built one of these curious what throws u ended up with for high rates normal 34 to 35* on alerion and 50ish on elevator? No as3x? What gain settings?
@ModelAV8RChannel
@ModelAV8RChannel 4 ай бұрын
Hey man, sorry I'm doing this from memory so bare with me. I gave this one away to a kid at the field about a year ago. I think I was between 33 and 35 deg on aileron, 55 or 60 deg on elevator, and all I could get on rudder without banging it against the elevator. My expo was around 65 to 70% on aileron and elevator and 35 to 40% on rudder. No gyro.

For the harrier loop, do you have flaperons mixed on a switch for it? Or was that just all elevator? Really looking forward to the Extreme flight 48” vid!!! 😎
@ModelAV8RChannel
@ModelAV8RChannel 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Justin...you see some folks using all kinds of funky mixes to get certain planes to do things like this. The beauty of a dedicated freestyle/3D plane is that they don't need anything like that to perform their intended mission. That was simply a burst of power and elevator. When a plane like this is set up correctly (balance is key) the only mix you'll typically see is a knife edge mix using aileron and elevator to get rid of the coupling. It is a very small mix and you just leave it on full time. It affects other things very little and we just naturally compensate for that. No switch flipping needed, and to be honest in a flowing freestyle routine you don't really have time to flip switches. The 48 Extreme Flight is coming in a few weeks!

@@ModelAV8RChannel I’ve been teaching myself some 3D over the last season with a few twisted hobbies models (better than a sim imo but I still use rf9.5), and just recently finished assembling the offshore variation of the 38” Wargo edge 540t 15e made by “Future Model” which is available for me locally at a hobby shop who imports them! Identically similar to this skywing in build. I don’t have any experience with balsa yet but I thought this may be a decent transition from 3D to XA! I don’t use a gyro in anything except one of my larger scratch built edf’s, but my question I’m finally getting at is…. Would a gyro rx like As3x benefit, or detract from XA and precision type flying? This will also be the first model I’ll need to learn to mix coupling so I’m looking forward to that learning process! Precision Aerobatics models are also available locally here so that’s goin to eventually be my final transition to a Balsa potentially at the end of this season if I can fit enough practice in!
@ModelAV8RChannel
@ModelAV8RChannel 2 жыл бұрын
Justin you've asked a complicated question...so here goes. Sorry if its long. I'm a believer in learning without a gyro. Not that gyros are bad, but you can't learn how to set up an air frame and get the most out of it if there is a gyro masking things you need to "feel". Also when it comes to technique I teach to learn to make all the corrections needed. Something as simple as a harrier can teach you a lot if you are feeling everything. You'll find out what angle of attack actually gets the plane post stall and stops the wing rock...you'll also find out what balance point makes it easier with less correction. With a gyro the plane will be stable at all angles of attack and it will make a lot of the tiny corrections you should be learning how to make yourself. (my opinion, not gospel) If later on you want to use a gyro at least you'll know the basics of set up and the maneuvers. Remember gyros can do two things - One : They can shine up a turd. You can put one in a air frame with no set up and they will instantly make it fly alright. Two: They can be used with low gains to refine a well set up air frame. That my friend will fly awesome...not just alright. The kicker is...if you don't know how to properly set up the plane and get the most out of the air frame first, you can't do that. The other train of thought for me personally is paying it forward. I help a lot of people...some use gyros, some don't. I need to be able to get the most out of a plane for them both ways. To stay sharp I fly mostly without gyros. Always without in a 3D plane I own. Those skills are too hard not to. I'm afraid if I use a gyro and get used to it being easier I'll lose my touch with a 3D plane without them. Also...and again this is just how I am...I like the challenge and I like having the skill sets. That is a lot of the fun for me. Now...all that said anyone who wants to fly Flex Innovations planes or Horizon planes that have a gyro...on or off...nothing in the world wrong with that. Anyone that wants to put one in a balsa plane...nothing wrong with that either. It depends on what your goal is Justin. If you want to learn all facets of 3D/XA/Freestyle flying including being able to set up anything and fly it well...learn without a gyro. If you just want to do 3D well as fast as possible and make it easier for yourself...use a gyro. Either way is fine. Hope that long answer sheds some light on it for you. Happy flying my friend!

@@ModelAV8RChannel Well… That totally clears the fog for me! I’m happy to continue to learn minus the stabilizer as I think I’ve done absolutely fine without it up to this point! I will aspire to learn every possible skill set necessary to grow myself as a pilot! I find the challenges of flying and problem solving aspects of building extremely fun and it’s so incredibly rewarding! I greatly appreciate the time you’ve taken to reply to me and the effort put forth in your thoughts behind it! This hobby (flying) has been the best thing yet to challenge myself! Some places (like Rc castle where I looked...go figure) still use the EPP abbreviation to describe it, some use PP, and Supa Tim at Northwest just calls it foam skin...lol. I see now looking at a different forum thread (for their Laser) that the early versions of these were EPP and now they are PP. When I do the comparison to the Extreme flight I will correct this. That will happen sooner than I thought as well...Northwest had a few in stock still and I have one in my shop as we speak. Thanks again for the info and I appreciate the kind words!
