This is a great flight, but it will likely appeal to a specific group of you the most. It takes place mostly at night, which means there isn't much scenery until the last hour or so of the video. Those of you who enjoy using my videos to help sleep/relax to, will likely love this one as the darkness will be great for that, and this was a very empty flight, which means there is minimal background noise. If you enjoy day time flights, you may not enjoy this one as much. Either way, I think it's a pretty great flight 😉. And honestly, I think it shows how far the channel has come. There was a time, not so distant, that I couldn't even film at night. it was too difficult for the camera to focus. Well, I can now! Enjoy!

Yee-haw! Thank you so much. Yes, this'll be great. I love both kinds, because variety is ... well you know... it makes life more interesting. I love talking to other passengers who are open to it, and I especially loved it when i had my Guide Dog, because it gave me more of an opportunity to break the ice and engage in some fun and interesting conversations. I so miss this! I don't know what it will take but to be able to get back to traveling would be so nice, and I'd really love to obtain another Guide. I've been so isolated here in Atlanta, and I'm so sick and tired of the abuses of our government officials! I feel I really no longer belong here in America, and I hate this feeling! It's not abnormal anymore, either, and I can't tell you how much people with disabilities are treated more and more like unwanted citizens! I guess that's why I love fabulous aviation channels like this one and other channels that feature Pat Metheny and other amazing musicians and singers, because people who really love good music also seem to really be more attracted to each other, and even this is becoming more and more difficult to find. It makes people lonely, and with all the fear and ignorance going on here, it's really crushing my spirit. I need a miracle. I need to get out of here, because I'm just existing, and that's not at all right! Atlanta's becoming like other cities with clickish people who are more interested in themselves and weigh too busy to care, and they're burning out faster than you can find even decent volunteer help to go places. We still can't rely on public transportation to get to where we need to go, and even Medicare's transportation is not only unreliable, Emory University Clinic and others have all but kept up with the times. Many are leaving the conventional medical system and going into functional medicine, because healthcare is not healthcare but sickcare, and it's making on average 3.8 trillion dollars annually by keeping people addicted to its diabolical practices. Something's got to change, and we don't have any confidence in anyone who's up for the runoff election on December 6. How am I going to be able to do what I love to do if everyone's throwing in the towel and running away from the solution? I'm sorry for the rant, but I can't even rely on our agencies for the blind for assistance. I so want to go to New York to see Pat Metheny on June 24 next year to see him at the Beacon Theatre, and I need someone to go with me, and I've even asked one of my friends from church, but she doesn't want to go. Thank God I'm almost fully over that cold I got 2 weeks ago, and my voice is almost back, so I can resume my singing. If it weren't for music, I'd be worse off right now. I still have nobody to celebrate Thanksgiving with right now, and so many of my friends are gone or have passed away or are unable to celebrate like they used to. I've got Teddy, my new cat, and he's such a ham! He loves burying his nose in my face and rubbing my cheeks, forehead, temples and head. He's a senior cat, and I adopted him a few months ago, because i knew nobody else would. Anyway, I had to get it off my chest, because it's not fun spending the holidays alone with nobody to entertain or do something for or with.

That night/day sunrise transition at 5:16:22 is very appealing to watch. Especially being the darker quite a while. Please tell where that was, if you can remember. Itmust have felt strange flying over the International Date Line into the opposite day/day before and probably Tuesday in Tokyo.
@sla312 жыл бұрын
Thanks my friend! I'm glad you enjoyed this one! I don't remember exactly where we were when the transition happened. Of course, on overnight flights like this the crew tend to make very few announcements as people are sleeping. FlightRadar data shows that we made that transition before the international dateline, while we were still closer to Japan, but that's not correct. The sun/dark line on FR24 is often wrong. To be honest, we were well past halfway, and probably past Midway Atoll. This was one of, if not my longest travel day ever. It started at 4:00am in Singapore, I had a 7 hour flight to Japan, a 4 hour layover in Japan, another 7 hour flight to Hawaii, a 2 hour layover in Honolulu, another 5 hour flight to San Francisco, and then I had to get from the airport to the hotel in San Francisco. The international dateline definitely makes it even more wonky. In total, I had been traveling for over 30 hours, but because of the dateline only 8ish hours had actually passed on the clock. It was a lot.

It's also fun when you go from Seattle to Amsterdam or Copenhagen. You have a greatly shortened red-eye flight.

Nice to see the far west side of the island - Mana, Barking Sands, Polihale, etc .... Am I correct that the flight going to Japan was more over Kauai or have they changed the flight path since the mid-80s? Can't wait for Hawaiian Airlines to get their first Dreamliner, although I prefer the A350 more! BTW, someone commented that HAL is state owned? Don't think so? Mahalo!
@sla312 жыл бұрын
Thanks my friend. I'm glad you enjoyed this one so much. I always love flying to Lihue and Kauai, but it's adminiradley my least visited of the Hawaiian Islands. Not for a lack of trying, mind you. Lihue also holds my personal record for having more flights canceled to than anywhere else. I think I've had 5 trips planned to Lihue that ended up being canceled or delayed beyond what I could take. That's no bad reflection on Lihue or Kauai, it's just bad luck on my part haha. I will be visiting Kauai again for a few hours on a trip next week. I'll be flying in on a Hawaiian 717 for a couple hours, so hopefully it works out haha. As for the flight path question. I'm not 100% sure on that. I haven't really studied and followed the flights from Hawaii to Japan like I have the flights from Hawaii to the mainland. Honestly though, the flight path is often determined by winds and where the winds will give the flights the best fuel burn. Just like when flights from BOS, JFK, CLT, or MCO often fly really far north and end up heading over the Pacific near San Francisco or Portland instead of cutting down towards Los Angeles. The winds are lighter or more favorable farther north and even though they have to fly a farther distance, it's actually faster and more economical. If that makes sense. It's likely that those same types of factors play big rolls in the flight paths to Japan as well. I'm also excited for Hawaiian's 787's, but like you, I to prefer A350's. As someone who loves to film flights, the 787's dimmable windows are a nightmare. The crew has the ability to auto-dim the entire cabin, and then lock them so passengers can't open them again. Now, United and American, who also operate 787's, had so many passenger complaints about crews locking the windows that they sent memos to their crews forbidding them from locking the windows, but... They still do sometimes. I love Hawaiian Airlines, but in my experience, their crews are the absolute worse about "pestering" passengers to close their windows. And it drives me insane. I booked a window seat, please stop asking me to close it... Again, I love Hawaiian. I think they're one of the top 2 airlines in the US for reliability and customer service, but it drives me nuts that their crews are not only allowed to pressure people into closing their windows, but are also allowed to make cabin wide addresses "encouraging" everyone to close their windows. It's just a pet peeve of mine and I think it goes against everything else Hawaiian strives to be. Anyway, I'm diverging on a rant. I'm worried that the 787 and their crew controlled windows will make this even worse... And last, I saw the comment about the "state owned" airline and I originally had the same response as you. Hawaiian is not a state owned airline. They are a private company, and I'm not sure if it's still the case, but at one point they were Hawaii's largest private employer. So, I almost mentioned all of this in my reply to that viewer, but then I read their comment again. They said: "I'm so impressed with Hawaiian airlines. Flying to another country with a state own government airline wonderful." And I'm not sure they meant that they thought Hawaiian was state owned. I think they may have been saying that they were impressed that Hawaiian was flying to a country with a state owned airline. AKA, Japan. Which I think is more likely what they meant. Of course, Japan no longer has a state owned airline either. Japan Airlines was privatized in like 1987, but for many many years, Japan Airlines was indeed state owned, and many still think it is today. So, I could be wrong, but I believe that's wha they meant.
@kauaiphotography2 жыл бұрын
@@sla31 Aloha Sir! Thanks for taking the time to write a very detailed reply. For sure I appreciate it very much. Very interesting about cancelled/delayed flights - first I have heard of this, but I suspect that it's not isolated to flights only to Kauai? Of course, once one flight is delayed, it will affect many others the rest of the day since these planes are flying all day long between the islands. Thanks for your info on the flight path question. I probably mentioned this in a past comment on another video, but my one and only flight to Japan was via Korean Airlines back in the mid-80's on a 747 to Kimpo and a short trip on a smaller (and packed!) plane to Osaka, but we flew right over Waimea Canyon and over Mount Fuji, so that was quite neat. I forgot about the windows in the Dreamliner! Hopefully your request to keep your window "open" will be honored, but the 787 is so automated that it may even be out of the control of the flight crew? I wonder if HAL is looking at the A220 as a replacement for the B717? And I appreciate you commenting on the state owned comment. I am so proud of Hawaiian Airlines and what they have accomplished even though I do believe they got some help from the state, at least during their bankruptcy a decade or so ago. And of course from the feds during the pandemic, but I believe all US airlines did too? Mahalo once again.
@sla312 жыл бұрын
As you mentioned yes, what airline in the US hasn't had some type of federal or state help at some point throughout their existence. Pretty much all of them took money during Covid. What's the saying? Too big to fail, comes to mind. Either way, they're definitely a private company, so either the previous viewer is mistaken or they meant Japan and Japan Airlines. I've heard though the grapevine that Hawaiian is very interested in the A220 to replace their 717's. I'd be fine with that, although it will be a sad day when the 717's are gone. To be honest though, I was surprised when Hawaiian selected the 787 over the A350. So who knows. To put a bow on the windows, the crew can control it, so that has become my go to request. If I'm on a 787 and the windows are locked I simply hit the call button and ask for them to be unlocked. Unlocking them doesn't open them all, it simply gives control back to each individual passenger. So far I've yet to be denied... But, I obviously haven't had to deal with it on Hawaiian yet. Honestly, I doubt it'll be a problem, but for someone like me who spends a lot of my own money taking these flights to post on here, it's a worry for me nonetheless. I do belie you'd mentioned your trip on the Korean 747 before. That's a trip I would've loved to have taken. Not only that, but if only cameras are better back then. The flights I took years and years ago that would be so cool to have recorded, but obviously it wasn't really an option back then. Cameras were so big and bulky, if they were even accessible at all, and the quality is nothing like it is today. Anyway, I always enjoy having discussion with everyone. I'm always happy to answer questions and chat. This is a big community here, and I've always said that I plan to treat this channel like I always have. No matter how big it gets. It still just a lot of aviation and travel lovers who enjoy aviation. I reply to and chat with as many comments as I can! Thanks again for watching my friend!

Yeah, a whole lot of black in this vid...but watching the transition from night to day in a plane just never gets old, IMO. Same goes for that amazing Hawaiian scenery. No meal footage? Also, did you actually hold the camera for this entire night flight...or did you get some sleep for a bit? And when not filming a flight, are you able to get some decent sleep? Personally, I never tend to sleep well on flights.
@sla312 жыл бұрын
So, I didn't film the meal service because to get the camera to work and stay focused I have to lock the exposure. I didn't want to mess that up by filming in the cabin and then risk not being able to get the camera to refocus again. I'm able to film at night now, but it's still very tricky and can easily get messed up and ruin an entire flight, so I didn't want to risk it. The meal was like a hamburger patty, with a fried egg on top of rice. It honestly looked kind of gross, but to be fair, it tasted great haha. As for the method of filming. I will be honest. I did set up a mount for awhile on this one. 98% of the time I hold the camera by hand, but I 'd come into NRT form SIN on another 7 hour flight, I had this overnight flight after a 4 hour connection, and then I had like 2 hours in HNL and I had another flight from HNL-SFO. It was one of, if not the longest day of travel I've ever had. Which is really funny thanks to the international dateline. It was like 30 hours of actual time passage, but by the time I got to the hotel in San Francisco, only like 8 hours had passed on the clock. It starts to get real wonky when you cross the dateline. Anyway, I had to sleep some on this flight, otherwise I'd probably keel over haha. So, I did get a few hours of sleep while the camera was being held by my mount. It's not that I don't travel with a mount. I just rarely use it. This was one of those rare times. I've also gotten better at sleeping on planes. I used to never be able to. But, when you have a day like this one, you end up sleeping out of necessity rather than ability, if that makes sense haha.
@turbofanlover2 жыл бұрын
@@sla31 Yeah, I kinda figured that you would have snuck in at least a bit of sleep on this flight. Totally understandable...even more so, given that wild travel day that you had. And if I were totally exhausted, I suspect that even I would manage to get a pretty decent sleep on a plane.

One of the things I like to challenge myself to do is try to figure out which gate you leave from using the clues from what I can see in the video and comparing those clues to Google Maps. Sometimes it's quite easy because of a gate number clearly posted on the jetways or other obvious clues. Other times, it can be more challenging especially when an airport has added new gates or other facilities and those new facilities do not yet appear in Google Maps. This one, however, has me completely perplexed. I believe you left through the North Terminal but I'm not even 100% certain about that. Can you tell us which gate you left from?

I'm also not super family with NRT as this was only my second time in the airpot, both during Covid, so there were a lot of blocked off areas. That said, I believe we were departing from a gate in the 90's. Like 93 or 94.
@brentcowell22942 жыл бұрын
@@sla31 That definitely helps. The shots you took out the window of the waiting area before boarding show some "islands" behind the plane. (I'm not sure what those grassy areas are called.) My guess is that places you at gate 95. It really doesn't help that most of the taxiing was done in the dark, but I am reasonably certain you were at gate 95. Thanks! Brent

Yes, they had a full meal directly after departure. I didn't show it though. I usually do, but in this instance I needed my camera to be focused outside. Once you lose the focus at night, it's so dark that the camera will never focus right again until the sun starts to come up.

I think this route is new for Hawaiian Airlines
@sla312 жыл бұрын
Well it was suspended during Covid, but I think it existed for some time before then. I'd have to research to be sure, but I think it's been around for awhile.

Hmmm. I'd seen the reports about the severe turbulence and injuries. I didn't realize it was this exact aircraft.

Is that Sound at 20:15 normal?
@sla31 Жыл бұрын
Yes, 100% normal. What’s creating that sound is the fan blades in the engine spinning faster than the speed of sound. So what you’re actually hearing is thousands of small sonic booms being created as each one of those fanblades moves through the air. The big difference, and why you can’t always hear it, is that it depends on where you’re sitting in the plane whether you can hear it or not. To hear it, you have to be sitting in front of the engines. So if you’ve been on this type of plane before, or if you’ve watched videos on this type of plane before and you didn’t hear it. It’s likely because you were behind the engines. either way completely normal.

You could have flipped it around and took this A330 from Honolulu to Tokyo, and then the All Nippon A380 back. Just because the A380 is always so perfect for international travel isn't it? And I like it better than this A330.
@sla312 жыл бұрын
Except then the A380 would've been in complete darkness and the A330 would've been in the light. And I wanted to take the A380 all in daylight.

@@sla31 Oh, I flew in complete darkness in an A380 flight when I flew from DXB-BOM.

@@sla31 Well, I'd take Emirates to get back. Like this: Tokyo-Dubai: Probably Boeing 777 Dubai to Los Angeles: A380 (Grateful one) Los Angeles to Honolulu: American Boeing 787 Dreamliner Or, you might not even want to go to Los Angeles because that airport is OVERLY crowded, and you have an incredibly long line to wait in, so in that case, you can to go San Francisco, it is definitely less crowded as far as what I know of.

Japan and Hawaii don't have a good history I am surprised HAWAIIAN AIRLINES flies there.
@sla31 Жыл бұрын
Well, that's true. But it's also, well, history. The US and Japan have a very close and good relationship today. And Hawaii is one of, if not the largest, tourism destinations for the Japanese. Between ANA, United, Japan Airlines, Zip Air, and Hawaiian it is a major international route. Traffic between HLN and NRT/HND is easily the busiest international route at HNL with over 300,000 passengers flying between the two in 2022. So, Hawaiian would be missing out on a major market if they didn't offer this flight. Anyway, thanks for watching my friend!
