@@andrewalexander9492 You have the price I remember. It is less a revenue stream then a way to get rid of the slabs. At this time of year it is likely that the people who should be thinking "I need to get a bunch of cheap firewood" are saying that is too hot out to bother with firewood!! The business needs it out of the way and some cash so they chipped a bunch of it. The "low cost" firewood users will be along in the cooler weather of Autumn.

@@scottsoper Yeah, I realize that it's something they need to get rid of or they'll just get buried. That said, turning it into the best possible revenue source is good business. Honestly, I'm kinda surprised that people aren't lining up for the "All you can pile on your truck for $15" I'd be interested if I were a local heating with wood. Slab wood isn't great firewood but it isn't bad for the price. An earlier episode showed where they were cutting up the slab wood into firewood lengths and stacking it on pallet for sale. Wonder what happened to that venture.

There is a sawmill about four miles down the road from me. They invested in a hammer mill and a wood pellet maker and use their sawdust and chips to make fuel for pellet stoves.

We used to pick slab wood at a lumber mill in Oregon. They packaged it and sold it to Target. Yes Target. It’s perfect camp fire wood. We delivered the load to a Target DC in Kansas. If you could talk to one of their buyers, I am sure you could work something to make some extra money.

Years ago (40+?) a mill near Bullard Beach State Park in Oregon would supply slab wood to the campground for free. Locals ruined it by driving in with their pickups and loading up free firewood for use at home.

That's a neat setup. So I am in the mulch business. High end hardwood bark mulch is made from sawmill cutoffs like you have. The cutoffs are high percentage bark material with a little wood too. The definition of mulch is a bark product. What I'm thinking is next time rent a small tub grinder and make a product that you can get 40 or 50 bucks a cubic yard for. A little more grinding and you are good to go. Thnx.

Emerald, Has anyone stopped by to purchase or ask for a couple of your log slabs? We get three or four from our local mill to use as turtle and duck floats! Tie a brick to a nylon string then tie it to the board..bark side up for traction! 😂 Works. Sometimes in the spring we will get thirty or more turtles!

When I worked at a sawmill, we took a tractor trailer full of saw dust to the papermill, I'd back it on a lift, the whole rig went high in the air, and sometimes the stiff breezes coming off Lake Michigan would make it wobble around looking for all the world it would fall off, it never did but it was fun to watch. We also put slab wood in bundles for those folks who heated with wood, and even chipped up some for compost bedding, and a lot of other things folks came to buy it for. The owners didn't miss a trick, they even found a use for the bark.

That's cool. You all are doing your part of the recycling procedure, instead of having a big bonfire, you reuse the,shall I say, scrap wood for chips. Pretty much breaking even, making a little for the effort, but mostly contributing your part of the the R's (reduce, recycle and reuse) effort 😊

Grew up in a small town in pa. Went to work in a lumber mill right out of high-school was there 18 years all our chips went to hammer mill in erie . Bark went to a local trucking company that would grind it into mulch and sell it.

I think anyone with a sawmill goes through the same stages, of first being happy and proud to see that slab pile get bigger; only to start swearing at it when it explodes in size to take up most of your space. What I hate about chippers, is that there's no in-between on the quality/pricepoint. On one side, there's the cheapie gas powered models, that aren't worth a damn and you can only jam one small branch down at a time (goodbye elbows). Then on the other hand there's the 20k plus models, that actually chip wood properly, but cost you a bloody second mortgage to get your hands on. My little range road chipper is alright; but after a day or two of fightin with it, I want to rent a big vermeer for a day, and toss that little range road right into it. :P

Ken your trailer reminded me of a mobile furnace shown on the Blancolario channel that a guy had in the woods. I believe it may have generated electricity too. It was pricey but super efficient leaving little ash for disposal. The manufacturer made different models/sizes.

Great video! I love working with machines like this... backhoes, excavators, and loaders - I wish I was back at it, unfortunately nuthin' like that around these parts! (aka Philly). I'm wondering if you couldn't save fuel and time by just chipping the slabs directly into the hopper/dump trailer? And to prevent "overshooting" the trailer, you can line the opposite or back wall side with vertical 4x8 sheets to act like a backdrop! *Thus, reducing the chance of dirt, stones, or other debris from getting mixed in! So... BONUS! (*does anyone ever use the word THUS anymore? LOL) Thanks again for the video, I miss my days in the mountains and the woods so many years ago, but your videos bring me right back again!

It is a matter of time and motion and the important time was the chipper rental time. It was many trailer loads not just one. So messing with the trailer during chipper rental time is not the correct priority. The chips on the ground won't go to the boiler but they will be using those chips for themselves as said in the video. Loading 15 scoops into the trailer did not take much time or fuel. They did the job correctly keeping the correct priority.

First thing: buy a chipper. They are invaluable, and can be used for MANY things. It's an amazing tool to have at your disposal. Secondly, wood chips require a lot of nitrogen to break down. Whether its stealing from other plants or the rain, which falls through the air we breath, and is 78% nitrogen. But they will break down or compost in time. Sawdust is good stuff too. As I have mentioned before, sawdust is good in blueberry plantings. Im sure there are a lot of blueberry farms up there (sawdust helps to make soil acidic) Im in the panhandle of WVA, and would LOVE sawdust for my blueberries...but I don't know anyone with a sawmill that's close by...yet.

I had a seasonally wet area on my property. About 5yrs ago I put an add in craigslist and marketplace for a wood chip dump. I totally filled that wet area plus some for free and it's all nice soil now. I think i had close to 400cuyrds of chips delivered for nothing. Some areas are 4' thick.

I used to deliver logs to a local mill when I was young. The mill had a jig that they could load slabs into. Then they would band the 4x4x8 ft 'bundle' and sell it for fire wood. Not the cleanest or best for indoor use. But fishing shacks, camp fires, hunting shacks, anything really, it worked great. I had a 5x'8 ft construction trailer that was built out of 1/4" tubular steel - very heavy. I bolted full dimensional white oak 2x6 cross members to the bed on 16" centers. I used a longer bar on my 90cc chainsaw and could easily cut the bundle into pieces. It was very cheap firewood - if it would suit your purpose.

If hauling chips is going to be a long term thing, it might be worth while looking into some kind of pit/wall where you could push the chips into the trailer rather than scooping and loading. Your lot seems to drop off in the back. Maybe you could do something with that elevation change.

Aim the chipper into the trailer next time. Save a step. And the veneer yard has reject hardwood logs suitable for firewood? Run to the veneer yard full of chips. double back for the weigh-in. Run back full of hardwood reject logs for firewood manufacture. Not sure you want to do that with that pretty trailer though.

safety is in the gray matter between the ears of the operator. boss man or em please touch on the topic and talk about the slab scraps l with metal. and walnut junk that might be toxic to animals and other uses. the prit margin is minimal but there is little waste. it is time and money. and not being in compliance to city and state and federal regulations. and wetting the dry chips would not be good to add weight is a no no. bringing chips and sawduct to the logging site reduces the muck on the logging site it also returns nutrients to the forest. not sure if it is cost effective to chip the tops of dead tress. the tops of live trees are food fot wild life. and som dead trees need to be left standing for natures biofriendly nesting boxes. in areas where there is not enough nesting boxes. some slab wood could be used for cuilding nesting boxeas. aas would some of the rounds that are hollow. but like every thing. if you have the time you like to cover the lost opportunity costs. and sometimes you do it for good will. in the dread clar cut mode there are whole tree chippers for woodchip fired boil processers. it depend on time to do and mony for time and equipment. and it all depends on the bottom line. to much cost and not enough revenue means lou are losing money. and some thig a loss of revenue earns good will that is priceless because of intangible returns. it is not a perfect model. do as much good as possible and to measure the profit or.lost. error zon the good side and god will reward you after earth. 1 be safe 2 do as much good wark as you can. (rtry to avoid rework asyou can. but it can happen by mistake. if you make a mistake. lesrn so it does not happen agai. like a pete(peat) and a repeat.(repete). 3 . be happy when you. can. if you are happy and you know clap your hands and you face will smile and you feel good in your heart. in the christian tradition. there is one god with 3 parts a father in heaven and a son who came down from heaven. to be on earth.... and a holy spirit that god sends from heaven to show is blessings on humans like the son of good.. the folks of the hebrew tradition there is one god and god likes thing kosher and you need a rabbi todo certain things in the name of god. no pork nor pork by products start the shabbat at about sunset local time friday night. and it ends saturday night an hour aft sunset local time. the christian god says the sabbath starts after saturday evening church service ends. and sunday sabath services end dwith the last sunday church services. and some Christian services are in the evening on sunday. to many man mde rules. so i say believe in one god divided by 1 or 3 ways take a day off to rest and relax and recharge. chose some gold verses not good and god will possibly forgive us for our mistakes. and follow the 10 commandments and modify the 6rth commandment try not to kill another human being. it cause way to much post traumatic stress disorder. (ptsd). and it is hard on the survivors.
