I love you! That's old school praise! My brother Alvin had been a paratrooper but came home from Vietnam agnostic. In 1986 he arrived at Mount Diablo Hospital DOA, and died THREE MORE TIMES as they tried methods of revival. Then a superb team of surgeons performed quadruple bi-pass heart surgery on him. But when he came to he said (what perhaps a former paratrooper WOULD say) "Beat THAT rap!" After careful consideration and rationalization, however, Alvin received JESUS on the recovery room table! I’m from Baltimore. Richard is from DC. So my pastor at the time (and my spiritual mom for a lifetime) was a radio DJ in those days...Richard Smallwood and the Smallwood singers were not as well known as Vision (not as many members either) and they used to come to my church ALL the time. The Smallwood Singers wore red all the time like Vision wears purple. I’ll never forget him. He is a dynamic and TALENTED man. He plays classical piano and back then, the only song he had that everyone knew was “Center of my Joy” but we had the privilege of hearing a LOT of his now well known music well before he made it among the ranks of the best artists in Gospel music.

Well I won't say underrated because Richard Smallwood is in a league in his own and when it comes to his music, he's not into the latest trends that everyone else is doing. I think Vision is the only classically trained gospel choir that I know of, and with the exception of Ted Winn and Andrea Dumas, everyone that is in Vision was with him in 1995 when he started.

I don't know if Mr. Smallwood or any of "Vision" members read these comments but I sure hope so. I began searching for his music a couple of months ago. I was gifted a "cassette" of his songs during the early months of my salvation (Early 90's). I was not only a "Babe in Christ" but just as new 2 all things "Church", from the artists, their songs, ways & traditions of all things called "Church". I recall so vividly how moved I was listening 2 the tape presented by a friend. Fast forward yrs. later, I thought of that long ago friend & then that moment of the gift of that tape. So I began a "UTube" journey of trying 2 discover the artist. I knew if I heard any of the songs it would trigger the memory. This is particularly profound as I'd been in & accident with resulting brain injury & memory loss (No worries..My Father made me a Warrior & He is healing daily; mind body & soul!! I rejoice in the victory while laughing @ the naysayers!) Well, not only did I finally come across the music but reconnected with my old friend as well!! When I heard "Center of My Joy" my heart lept with "Joy!!" I'd found him!! Richard Smallwood!! This last month or so, I've listened over & over again to practically EVERY song! What & amazingly gifted, genuinely anointed talent! Writing, composing, singing & bringing together "other worldly talent" to support his own! Surely God said, "I will make a man & bring together a group that will sing my praise & bring glory to my name. He/They will move upon the hearts of many bringing comfort, strength hope & courage during their most trying times. Their songs of praise will stir up my Spirit within my people causing them to experience joy & know of my power, love & care for them. My people will rejoice in the words & music of these songs; their hearts spirits & souls will be refreshed..Renewed!" Yes, Mr. Smallwood, I surely hope, somehow you get the opportunity to read my words. They are but a small glimpse of how powerfully wonderful the gift God has given you has blessed in an exponential way, my life & I'm confident so many many others!!
