Uncle Tony's Garage

Жыл бұрын

The roots of our super lightweight Slant Six Dart project go way past our KZbin channel, all the way back to 1987 and a project we did for Cars Illustrated magazine called 12.99 for $1,299.
In between were a lot of twists and turns, but the idea remains the same. Take an underdog and go as fast as we can for as little money as possible.

I love it. Plan Z sounds like a pissed off old UPS truck... You know the old gas powered ones with the clutch that would make an awful squeal every time they take off.

Your video reminded me of a favorite thing from back in my wrenching days: the " reach in the window, turn key, start car....no pumping the gas, screwing with the distributor, spraying rocket fuel in the carb....no need....it just starts ". Among we mostly ignorant wannabes Sox and Martin types, this was considered a dazzling party trick! Thanks, Tony!

Haha fan of anything not Chevy 350😂 I'm old enough to remember as a kid ,the automotive aisle at the grocery store had Chevy 350 valve cover gaskets. Thermostats too,I remember that. Even as a kid I read so many articles on a 350 hop up I was bored with em and wanted something different before I could even drive.

Lol not there yet in the vid, but I'm a pansy I don't wanna burn my hand I use a squirt bottle. Haha at work, on some pesky smaller air cooled 2 cylinder generators occasionally I'll fire one up and sure enough she's running on one cylinder. No need to shutdown and use the factory approved spark checker yet , the ol squirt on the exhaust tells ya the dead one. Good stuff man, good stuff. Haha I've been known to hock a loogey at an exhaust manifold 😂😂😂

Yeah, but like he just said: all of that has been done before. The challenge here, is to eventually run 11 sec 1/4 mile times with a naturally aspirated engine.......that IS a feat to pull off. Anything goes much faster with forced induction or nitrous, and that's pretty boring nowadays, because everyone is doing it. Besides, nothing but nothing sounds as sweet as a well built/well tuned NA engine, whether it has 4, 6, or 8 cylinders. No super charger whine and no hiss from a turbo........just pure engine power and the unadulterated exhaust note it makes when romped, via headers & open exhaust. It takes far more skill & talent to make NA go fast. Just sayin'.

I built and raced dirt oval mini stocks locally when I was in my early teenage years. This slant six has the same sound and vibe going on. Lighten it up as much as physically possible and then add weight into the car where you want it to bring the weight up to the Rulebook weight. Then start working with the motor adding up power wherever possible. It's weird that Tony's slant sounds so close to the 2.3 Ford Lima engines we stroked cammed ported polished and shaved to get as much power as possible from
@MrTheHillfolk
@MrTheHillfolk Жыл бұрын
Ford made some great engines I really like for industrial use ,and the 2.3 is one of em. Of course the 300 is wonderful and as smooth as a sewing machine. Those are great when they are cooled with a heat exchanger,that way all you hear is the purr of that engine. I've seen that 2.3 used well into the 2000s , and I saw they made it a 2.5 near the end.

Mind Blown. I was a HUGE Cars Illustrated fan and have every copy. It inspired me to build a WAY too fast street racer and basically drag race every fast car I could get my hands on. Your content in that mag was by far my favorite, but figured you gave up the car hobby as I never saw your name much anymore.. Then UTG shows up in my feed, and yea you got the same first name but it doesn't click with me at first. Then you talk about the 12.99 for $1299 article and it blows my mind, its YOU brother!! Glad to see you kept up with the car hobby after all these years. I got priced out of the fast car market by life. Another great article was "I was a teenage pit slave". Keep up the good work Tony.

My first car, 1964 Dart GT W/225. With the help of Clifford, Offenhauser a 90 thousands shaved head and a 273 Hyper Pack 4 barrel it really woke that tractor motor up. Always thought the slant would make a good candidate for a diesel motor.

Hard to beat the inline six when it comes to torque. My last vehicle I towed my trailer with was a 98 Cherokee with the 4.0. Now I’m using a 99 Sonoma with the 4.3 V6. Even tho the V6 is a slightly larger motor, I prefer the 4.0 in the Jeep. Both are auto trans. Yes, the Sonoma feels a bit peppier, but you can really tell the difference with the trailer hooked to it. The Jeep didn’t seem to care whether the trailer was there or not. Gas mileage didn’t change much either. Just the opposite with the Sonoma. Give me the inline motor any day……
@ks_1111
@ks_1111 Жыл бұрын
Most of that is the auto trans in the Sonoma, the stock trans and trans tuning cuts off one testicle. With the 5 speed its better, and they come alive at about 1800-2K

I hit a deer one night and destroyed the front clip, pushed the radiator into the fan, buckled the hood 😥. Trying to find a front clip for an A body Mopar for less than what I paid for the car itself 😥. Six in a row, makes er go! ✊🤘👍
