But, only AMC, a company that had previously sworn off getting involved in any of that antisocial racing nonsense, had the stones to build a lightweight, stripped down big cubic inch compact, and market it directly to the horsepower crazed teenage street racers of the era.

I have 1 SC/Rambler and I’d like to add a couple things to this video about these cars. 1, It is generally accepted that 1512 were built, however only 1500 actually saw the street. The 12 additional cars were for the James Garner off road race team. 10 we’re 2wd and 2 were converted to 4wd. 1 still exists. 2. There’s no real evidence that they were built in 3 “batches”. 500 we’re originally planned, but the cars sold well so AMC decided to build more. A picture on the assembly line at AMC with 1 of these on it exists, so these weren’t built at the actual Hurst facility. 3. Of the 1512, around 1200 of them were A scheme cars. With the other 300 being the more subdued B scheme. This is also generally accepted but cannot be confirmed. 4. In 1969 these cars had the highest factory power to weight ratio offered. 315hp in a car that weighed 3000 pounds. I very much enjoyed this video.

International got out of the light duty business and switched completely over to over the road trucking, school buses etc, and merged with Case for implement use. Just change in marketing. Scouts were excellent vehicles, as well as the pick up trucks, and Travel Alls

In 1994 I looked at one in the Junkyard in Bend OR. It was blanketed as the A trim. Not realizing that by then our easy to find and afford muscle car options were about over. I just looked it over quickly, especially being a Mopar guy. Never forgot those wheels and that awesome paint… Remember the day a guy could buy a 70 Road Runner for $700.00? Only a good memory now!

Congrats on the new pup! I grew up in Kenosha in the late 1970's into the 1980's. Sc/Ramblers were stashed in garages like Hellcats are today. the hottest American's were the ones owned by AMC employees who had 'Access' to unique factory parts. It wasn't unusual to se a beater American wheel standing down a neighborhood street. "Access" consisted to parts that left the factory under the fence.

I had a 77 CJ5, took out the 258 I6, and threw in a 304 I built from an old Gremlin. I got off the eBay for 25 bucks. It was a beast and very dependable. It could smoke those 33x13.50 Super Swampers with no problem too.

I owned a1967 Rogue with a 343 typhoon, Carter AFB, Borg Warner T-10 and 3:54 rear. It was one of less than 50 built with the 343. I discovered I had to buy 68 Javelin parts when making some repairs. I had a lot of fun with that car. I didn't realize how rare it was.

Thrush also made a performance muffler (round straight-thru shape) without fiberglass packing back then. In fact, I put a pair of those on my parent's new '71 Road Runner back in the day. At Fremont Raceway, a bystander told me he could hear the Road Runner exhaust even alongside my competitor running open headers. Those were loud at full throttle, but actually fairly quiet cruising on the freeway at 70 mph (3,000 rpm). My parents sold the Runner to a friend after I had driven it to high school during my junior and senior years. The new owner quickly received a citation for noise and re-installed the factory mufflers. During the years I drove it, I was lucky enough never to have been busted by the cops for noise.

For a few years I drove a '73 Dart Sport with a 318. Nothing special, 625 AFB, LD340 intake, 340 cam, and open headers with collectors. Idling and light throttle it sounded pretty normal and not too loud. You just had to be aware of your surroundings before opening up. Then it got pretty loud. I never got stopped, but the guy I sold it to did within a couple of weeks.

Had a buddy scare the snot out of me when he drove his 4WD eagle through a 90 degree turn at about 35 MPH! I thought we were going to die! Nope! Whoop! Went right around the corner and kept on truckin with very little tire squeel! I think my stomach is probably still in that intersection somewhere! 😅

I had one , bought it used in 1978. the 390 had been blown up and was long gone, the headrests were MIA, the original hood and scoop were long gone. it had been repainted black. It had a beefed up 343 and was super powerful. I bought it from a buddy after he dropped a valve . I had the 343 rebuilt, slapped on a new Holly 700 double pumper on top of the Edelbrock R4B, new Zoom clutch , and two new used round thrush mufflers they haven't now made in decades, It had rear air shocks, low profile wide track 50's on the rear, and was the quickest car I have ever driven from a dead stop. The 3;54 twin grip was a handful with the wide rear tires.

Great idea. I have not seen one of these in Edmonton Alberta Canada in a long time. Probably sold to a US collector. BTW your Border Collie is a Top Dog, like the sign on your wall says. And so cute. They are not, however, a lap dog. They are born to work: to herd other animals, to run like hell after a ball, etc. Take him to a big field with a ball launcher soon. First time I saw a Scrambler was 1971. The dentist down the street from my High School had bought one. It was so cool. There were a few 390-401 Rebels running around our town, too. The only complaints I remember was no aftermarket support. You could make a small block Chevy it Ford run circles around them at half the cost. But they sure looked cool in Red, White and Blue.

Thank you for covering this car because not many hot rodders know about them. My mom who had just graduated from college & started teaching school bought one of these brand new in the summer of 69 at a AMC dealership in Johnson City Tennessee and kept it until 1974 when her & my dad sold it to a neighbor who owned it for a few years & then it went through a few owners and ended up on a used car lot in 1984 & my dad almost bought it back at that point and still to this day regrets not buying it. Not long after my mom bought the car her & my dad married & moved to his hometown of Maryville Tn & my dad started working on it & put the group 19 intake, cam, headers, and a double pumper Holley on the car and it ran good enough to outrun his buddies 68 396/375hp chevelle. May dad also had a 67 z28 that he bought brand new at Charles West Chevrolet in Maryville Tn (about 20 mns outside of Knoxville) that had quite a bit of “day two” modifications done to it & the little rambler would usually outrun it by about half a car to one car length in the quarter mile. All through the 70’s this car was prettier well known around Blount and Knox country because it was the only one around & it hurt a lot of peoples feelings. From what I understand the car still resides in Blount county to this day but hasn’t seen the road since the mid 80’s .

I built 66 Rambler 440 hardtop in the early 80s.Swaped the l6 for a punched .30 over 343, and Borg Warner auto from Javelin, V8 crossmember from Stack Auto Parts in LA, Edelbrock torquer and 650 holly. Crane came. Best car I ever had. It was loud, and fast and no one else had one like it. Thanks for bringing back the memories Tony. Wish I could find my old car. Ohio

I actually saw one of these sitting on a used car lot when I was a teenager. It had been repainted in all white, and the only way I recognized it as an SC/Rambler was the special hood scoop with the hood pins, and it still had the Hurst shifter with the T handle. Wish I had gotten a peek under the hood, but I was with my dad and he was looking at something else.. Yeah, I would have loved to have drove it home!

You are spot on about AMC not getting the recognition that they deserve. Wally Booth running an AMC in Pro Stock back in the 70's will attest to that. But to state that one of their products was the true muscle car of it's time is stretching it just a little bit.

Thanks for a very informative vid Uncle Tony. AMC was the underdog way back then but they did make some very cool cars. AMC was so ahead of it for the times. Just look at the AWD Eagle. I had a 71 Gremlin X back in my high school days and after blowing up the warmed over 304, rebiilt it with an even hotter 401 out of a retired North Dakota highway patrol car.🙂 The cool thing abot them was all the V8's were the same size externally. Thus everything bolted in.

There was an A scheme SC/Rambler in my area when they were new, and I knew 2 guys who bought 70 Rebel Machines new, both with the wild red and blue striping package. I recall the very low profile F60x15 Firestone’s, shorter than the comparable Goodyear’s, a 3.90 axle and a carved in stone 5000 rpm redline didn’t make for a happy highway cruiser.

Had 4 of them over a period of time. Shoulda kept them but life got in the way. One of my friends had a Shelby (one of the first 100) but I never beat him although close) I had a couple of Shelby's but that is another story. The Scrambler was just about the most fun car I ever had. Entering Rt. 95 side ways on an enterance ramp in a controlled skid was priceless!

Back in the mid 70's I was at a used car lot on Keystone Ave. in Indianapolis and there was a '69 AMC wirh the factory hood scoop. I opened it and there sat the cross ram intake & twin Holleys. Was a dirty brown color with a black interior. Was setting on the back row like they didn't really want to sell it.

I saved a rust free but wrecked 67 Rambler Rogue from the crusher. Factory 290/4speed car. I'm currently building a SC/Rambler tribute car with a EFI 390/5speed. Rumor has it that the first 500 were all "A" scheme, the dealers wanted something a bit less flashy, so 500 "B" schemes were built. The last 500 were a mix, but mostly "A" scheme. Rumor also has it that a few were repainted to standard colors at dealers so they could get them off the lots at the end of the model year. Been watching your channel for a while, even though I'm an AMC guy. I've owned many Jeeps over the years, and currently have a 69 AMX and a 74 Javelin AMX along with the project Rogue.

A buddy of mine had a big bad green AMX with the Crane prepped engine in it, The torque kinked the body while street racing with big slicks and the doors wouldn't shut properly any more so he installed the complete drivetrain in a 69 Javelin SST body. found the factory roof spoiler, painted the car big bad green and built a sick street racer. The late 70s were a great time for street racing. God I feel old. LOL

The First time I ever saw one of these was at Warner Robins Dragway when my father was trying to run Stock/Super Stock with the 70Lt1 Camaro we brought back from Alaska. I remember seeing the hood off the in the pits, and had the 2x4s on it. The old man only raced him a few times, and it was a tit4tat as my mom called it. I'll always remember seeing it and the Camaro going to 2nd gear with the front wheels 2 or so feet in the Air! Good Times as a TrackRat Kid! I have a friend that has one today, as well as a Machine, and several other Rare AMCs. Very Underrated Stuff.👍👍

I remember as a young kid, my uncle Jr. Was a mechanic for Ridgewood Rambler in Ridgewood Queens NY. He brought home one of these cars for lunch. I was by my grandparents house that day, and he took me for a ride. Holly Crap. I am 60 years old, I still remember how this car pinned me to the seat. This car was fast, I think faster than my Dad's 67 GTO. I come from a family of auto mechanics, my Dad, my uncles, my Grandfather, me,and finally my son. My son is an airplane mechanic. But he still turns wrenches.

I first saw one or these at a local car show at a roast beef joint in my home town 25 years ago. I had my mom before hand bring me to Barnes and noble so I could buy a book about muscles cars and learn everything I could. I remember a small section about the sc scrambler and did not think anything of it, other than it was really different, and I liked the hood scoop. Well, I saw this thing there and thought it was really cool in person but it was still over shadowed by 70 chevelle 454 ls5 big block cars and 68-69 chargers, etc. however, I was walking home ( I was 14) and the owner or the SC Scrambler F’n opened her up and scared that crap out of me. Coming up from behind I did not see what was coming, he must of floored it 20 for behind me, he hit that pedal and I nearly jumped into a tree I got so spooked and I roared passed me glass packs and all chirping every gear. Holy crap it was amazing. It was a reckoning for me and it certianly earned the street cred it desired. Ever since then this has been a top tier car in my mind and also being over looked made it even better

I had the ride of my life in a Rambler when the gas pedal became unresponsive while the engine went wide open approaching an inclined intersection where we had the stop. Luckily there was nobody coming. We went airborne, clearing the intersection and landed 75 feet downrange facing in the opposite direction in the opposite lane. I had managed to kill the engine before we 'took off' so going anywhere at that point wasn't an issue. Looking under the hood revealed a carburetor linkage malfunction had been the cause, negating the gas pedal from the system. Easy enough to fix and get us back home, but man, I drove like grandma to get there. Took a few hours to shake that off. I was all of 17 at the time.

Thrush had a straight through baffled muffler, similar to a glass pack muffler, but without the fiberglass to burn out. They were very loud. When the Hush Thrush muddler was made available, auto parts stores and speed shops had cutaway models of the Hush Thrush muffler. The Thrush salesman would explain to the store clerks the features of the Hush Thrush and the store clerks would point out the features to customers. A few years later people would forget the important feature of the Hush Thrush muffler, but the cutaways were still on display. In the cutaway, all of the muffler is galvanized to print rust, EXCEPT a square screen of paper thing sheet metal, perforated with tiny holes at the end of one of the two tubes inside the Hush Thrush muffler. Back in the days of leaded gasoline, this screen would quiet the exhaust when new, but after some street miles, the non-galvanized screen would rust away and disintegrate in the exhaust. This turned the Hush Thrush muffler into a turbo muffler. About the same time, Cyclone Headers came out with a copy of the Chevy Corvair tube muffler, but Thrush didn't come out their own version of the turbo muffler until after unleaded fuel became popular. The only difference between the Hush Thrush and the Thrush Turbo mufflers was the non-galvanized screen inside the Hush Thrush muffler. The Thrush Turbo muffler just left out the screen and left an open hole in that end of the pipe inside the muffler, to increase exhaust flow through the muffler. I thought it was interesting that Thrush advertised this Hush Thrush design feature with cutaway model mufflers at auto parts stores and speed shops.

When I was in high school in the late 1960's my best friend's dad drove a 1963 Rambler Ambassador with a factory AMC 327, and no it was not a Chevy they looked nothing like a SBC. It was a true runner and would smoke the tires as long as you wanted if you did not let off. So, when my neighbor was selling his 1967 American I bought it. We were at a local salvage yard one day and they had a 1968 Javelin with a 343 four speed that had been hit hard on the passenger and totaled I bought the driveline from it and with help from friends we put it all in that Rambler American. I remember looking at a '64 770 Rambler two door hardtop. Popped the hood and there looking back at me was a 287 or 327 Rambler V8 with a factory four barrel. Probably had twin traction( a lot of them did). I thought "What a sleeper!".

There was a well used and half dead one of these for sale a few years ago in Lebanon / Berwick Maine. Think they wanted like $16k? Back in the early 80s, my dad owned a 4 door AMC Rebel with the 290 V8 and 3 speed auto. The car had plenty of pep. I remember it always started at the touch of the key, like a well tuned 289 Ford. Would be running before you could let off the key.

I had that kit! The Hurst Scrambler was one of my favorites due the outlandish paint scheme (especially the arrow on the hood that said For Air). I paid $4.00 for the kit, gave it to a neighborhood kid who painted it with a brush. Now the price for kit is through the roof along with the real Scrambler!😣

Great video. AMC guys are rabid fans with good reason. I got a 71 Hornet S/C 360 out of Amarillo, Texas. Gave any SS396 cars fits. No one would believe it was stock.

Those were cool cars. I liked the AMC Machine also. My parents drove AMC cars for a while, mom had a '67 Ambassador with a 290 V8 and a '72 Matador which had a 304 V8 I believe. They ran OK but the best feature was the seats that folded all the way back which made them great for taking a date to the drive-in movies. A friend of mine had a Rambler American, probably an early '60s model. It had the front springs on the upper control arms. Once he was making a left turn onto a dirt road and the bump caused the left spring to come out and bounce around. It wasn't the first time so he knew what to do. He got out the jack and it only took him a few minutes to put it back in place.

Thoroughly enjoyed this video Tony. It brought back a lot of memories. I remember when "Thrush Hush" were all you could get for performance mufflers. I didn't know the back story of the development. Wish I would have kept my Group 19 parts catalog, (and my 1968 Javelin. Looking forward to seeing more on Winnie.

I've got a white Mopar Road Wheel. Which is not a Magnum 500, technically. It is white around the spokes. I took it off a junkyard white Mopar. Probably an 80's Diplomat.

I am 66, when i was 15 i worked at a Service Station pumping gas, One of the guys who was a good Friend of the owner, had a S/C Rambler, When he needed the lift or wanted to work on it he would bring it there. no idea what Package it had or the class it ran, but i remember he won a bunch of races at the Local Drag Strip with it. One of the Guys who worked there had a 69 Hemi Road Runner, if memory is correct that Rambler beat it more than once, they were friends so you know all the ball busting that went on between the 2.

Tony, what a great video. I wish I knew you a few years back. I did get to work on one of these cars. The owner is just about to finish it up. I can say that the rambler is built tough with layers of strength in the rocker panels and frame connectors installed at the factory. I replaced the inner rocker on both sides because the rust had turned it to swiss cheese. It was a B scheme paint car, and I can't remember the production number.

One of the issues with parts for AMCs is that most of the parts went into landfill when AMC went out of the car business. Luckily that didn't happen with Studebaker. Anyway a great video.

I bought a new Hurst SC/Rambler from a Rambler dealership in Red Bank, N.J. in 1969. About a year or so later, I bought a used one, which I put in my father's garage to take apart for modification into a full out racing car. Unfortunately after I pulled the engine and dropped it off to be worked on, I ran out of money. The shop sold my engine out from under me, and my father made me sell the car to get it out of his garage. I don't remember what happened with the one I was driving (that was 50 years ago, lol).

silly and off topic story. thrush hush i installed into my 65 teiumph tr4. after a few miles of asphault grinding for the final fit it worked great except over speed bumps. thanks for the memory.

The cool thing about AMC is when they did this they advertised it so people knew about it + anyone could get one . The big three only the pro racers knew about it . When the drag packs came out I talked to a guy & he said they all were cleaned already . I know I could not afford one but if I could I could not get one anyway. I thought the puppy was gonna pee on you . I am glad that did not happen.
