I know saying Slash licks get clicks but guess what? These are your licks man. Your sense of timing, falling behind and catching up gives these licks that nasty bite. You sound like you and thats really cool

@@anthonydavella8350 dude that’s probably the coolest comment I have ever gotten! I appreciate that. Yea, well I’m sure part of my uses the slash thing to get clicks, but I think most of my motivation or intention is to demonstrate a slash type style, but not so much how to play exactly like slash or to reach exact solos of his. Slash is a big influence of mine but I am also a big fan of Clapton (particularly blues breakers, cream, and his from the cradle album), SRV, Hendrix, and wait for it…Gsharp. I actually prefer Gsharp’s interpretation is slash style more than slash himself. I think that’s because I could tell that he was a blues guy and Honestly had better blues phrases, vibrato, and timing than slash in my opinion. I dig slash’s style and how he mixed major and minor pentatonic and his use of legato, so I’m definitely chasing that sound but ultimately I prefer the feel of those other guys I mentioned. So, comments and compliments like you gave are high praise from my point of view, because if you just rip out all these slash type licks but don’t have the timing and feel than just don’t hit or work as well. I love your stuff. As a gigging guitar player (ok I know which notes are which), I see you have such a similar way as me, when hacking around the neck, looking for the Eb blues note flat 5, in this case, and using your/slash's technique, to bring it in the oh so right places. Your manner is charming, man. For anyone that gets a bit perplexed, I'd recommend really getting really familiar with the straight A minor scale, here. That way, if you get momentarily lost on the neck, you can add some lovely color, to stuff. It also cements the A minor tonic, so you can go back in to the A dorian slash mode thing, which is the G major scale pattern, starting on the second note , A at fret 7, D string. That's the secret.

Thanks man, I appreciate that info. You sound pretty knowledgeable about music and theory. That’s also cool that you’re a gigging musician. What country are you from? I started playing guitar initially when I was 12 or so, but I was into punk rock (the Sex Pistols in particular) and that was all I wanted to play for a while. Then through old tunes like Johnny be good and such I started trying leads and learned the basics, all this being done mostly by ear or watching guys (this was the 80s). I then got into GnR and started getting better with lead (but still basic) but was learning those fundamentals like bends, vibrato, double stops, rakes and such. I also learned a lot from the GnR video I posted on my page. I then got into straight blues for a couple years and really liked SRV but then moved and went to grad school and stopped playing lead guitar for a good 15 years or more. I did the acoustic singer song writer thing for a few years and eventually got back into to lead guitar around 2018. Definitely learned a lot in that time thanks to KZbin. As a kid I had no idea how slash was doing those legato runs, it all seemed like magic back then. Definitely been cool to break through some ruts and get better. But yea, I definitely learned by using my ear. I never even used tabs. I’m definitely making a bit more of an effort to understand some theory but mainly I do this for fun and only have so much time to devote to it. Sometimes I wish I would have stuck with it when I was younger but can’t change that now. Thanks again for the comments 👍🏼🎸

Thanks so much man, I’m glad it’s been helpful for you. My practice routine is pretty loose but I play a lot. I play pretty much every night (after kids are asleep and I have some time) for an hour or two. I’ll usually spend some time warming up and just trying to get in a zone doing the stuff I already know. I may focus on some particular aspect like vibrato, bends, or phrasing, but mainly just trying to have some fun and get my fingers going. If I’m feeling alert and not too tired from the day I may watch some type of instructional stuff. I might watch something slash oriented like gsharp or maybe just general blues rock. I have some stuff I purchased from Brett papa that I would highly recommend to anyone man. He has a course on mixing major and minor pentatonics and it’s excellent! I have learned so many licks from him as well as understanding how to connect things. Seriously consider it. He plays tons of licks that are definitely in the same territory as slash. So yea I’ll do that some and then I try to play to backing tracks and just improvise. So usually it’s some combination of those things. I’m actually playing now! Yea, I think if someone has the patience, this kind of of slow process of going through the licks and stuff can be really helpful, I know i personally like to learn that way, but it’s not for everybody. It’s not a Jessica slash model, it’s a USA standard 50s les Paul in dirty lemon burst, but definitely has that slash vibe. It has a flamed top, not the pain top like the Jessica. It kind of looks like a cross between the Jessica and the derrig AFD guitar. Thanks again 👍🏼🎸🤘🏼

Hey man, I’ll try to fit that in sometime. It’s a position I tend to neglect a bit but when im playing in E I definitely will go to that position for a few licks, but nothing too special. A couple of licks that sound a bit Hendrix / SRV ish, but I have figured out how to do a few slash style legato licks in the open position. When I’m playing in E, if you consider the open position box 1, I tend to play more in box 2 3 4 and of course the classic. 12th fret position. How’s your playing coming along ? Thanks again 🤘🏼🎸👍🏼

Hey man, glad you found this helpful and I appreciate your positive feedback! I think box 5 is actually the last minor pentatonic box just before the one that you are describing, which is like the octave version of box one. So box 5, if I recall correctly, is the little box just before that octave box. In the key of A these same notes would be found right before box 1 and would overlap greatly with major pentatonic box 1. Does that make sense? I don’t really use box 5 a ton but I do grab or target some notes from it in passing. I started to mention it in this lesson but just trying to tackle 1 - 4 was a big enough challenge for me. I’m still pretty new to some of this so explaining it can be a challenge. Thanks again my friend 🎸👍🏼🤘🏼

Ha! Fair point. Yea, I’m new to doing lessons and since I have zero video editing skills this is all one shot with no pausing. Obviously if / when I learn to edit I would leave out some stuff. I try to stay on some kind of linear path but it’s easily to get a bit lost in the process. I also don’t really do much planning ahead of time so I’m left working it out in real time. But hope you’re able to extract something useful from it. I know when I watch guitar lesson type stuff I tend to just focus on a few things at a time or find particular parts that interest me. It’s a bit tricky making these knowing the varying degrees of people ability and their individual learning preferences. I am trying not to over think it now and just put something out there. @@Havanacuba1985 hey man, good to hear from you. That’s an excellent course, definitely my favorite course that I have bought. His teaching is very clear and the course is well organized. I have definitely picked up many licks from him. Also, I was unsure if you saw but I did post a link for you of a Jakob slash custom video I bought. That way you can see what that is like. It’s definitely worth getting as a slash fan but I do find it rather exhausting to learn from at times. The custom video is a bit more clear because I requested that he slow down and repeat more. Some of the other videos go way too fast for me and too much variation too soon.
