Q2:173 He has ONLY forbidden to you dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allah . But whoever is forced [by necessity], neither desiring [it] nor transgressing [its limit], there is no sin upon him. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful. Here Allah stresses that there are ONLY four dietary prohibitions Q16:115-116 He has ONLY forbidden to you dead animals, blood, the esh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allah. But whoever is forced [by necessity], neither desiring [it] nor transgressing [its limit] - then indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful. And do not say about what your tongues assert of untruth, " This is lawful and this is unlawful" to invent falsehood about Allah . Indeed, those who invent falsehood about Allah will not succeed. Allah repeats that there are only four prohibitions and those who say (all the hadith collectors and followers) there are other extra prohibitions are inventing falsehood about Allah Q6:145-149 Say, I DO NOT FIND in what has been revealed to me anything forbidden to eat except carrion, running blood, swine which is impure or a sinful offering in the name of any other than Allah. But if someone is compelled by necessity neither driven by desire nor exceeding immediat need then surely your Lord is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful." Interestingly, here Allah commands everyone to declare that they have understood there there are only four dietary prohibitions. Q6:150 Say, Bring forward your witnesses who will testify that Allah has prohibited this." And if they testify, DO NOT TESTIFY with them. And do not follow the desires of those who deny Our verses and those who do not believe in the Hereafter, while they equate [others] with their Lord. Finally Allah commands us to reject any other prohibitions no matter how convincing testimony (Bukhari, Muslim, Muwatta, Musnad etc. ) is presented. No reasoning, convincing, discussions !! Simple rejection ! I wonder why the so called "scholars" could not understand these unambiguous words of Allah and transgressed by giving their own shariah.

The idea we should identify with others based on a dietary preferences is a bit absurd, with no indication that this factor is a priority in the Quran with regards to food consumption. Health and quality of meat should be a priority, as well as integration within our communities. With the Pagan ritual removed it should be a individual decision and without peer pressure or hardship placed upon that decision. 👍🏼

its what the Hadith in Bukhari and Abu Dawud refer to when identifying a muslim; 2 things 1. faces our Qibla 2. eats our meat. i dont think its absurd at all, its actually an incredibly profound concept laid out with simplicity of ease. giving people a unfirom would be absurd making them speak a common language would be tyranny even a dietary dish is incocievable since islam is to be a global phenomenon subsuming many cultures. How they simply slaughter their meat in affirmation of the same God completed in almost an istnat ... fleeting ... yet the profundity of slaughter combined with name of the sacred leaving an indellible imprint on the psyche! ha! pure nad sheer genius. but hey each to their own.

By using logic if no other names are mentioned before killing an animal and we know that all creation belongs to god. Doesn't it make the meat permissible to eat?

Salaam again Mufti , I completely agree with you , but in the west the reality is different , there is a reason why Allah has facilitate Human beings in general through Islam , Nowadays Muslims going to party at work , they refuse to eat because they say it is not halal , this is extreme ,but when I eat my steak they look at me with a different eyes . I think Muslims are obsessed with Halal and Haraam , I don't think we are like the Jews , Allah has put a burden on them because they disobeyed Allah , we muslims are not bound by the laws of Kosher , I think we are following the jews in this aspect not our Nabee , our Nabee has been sent to faciltate the Ummah and to remove the burden of Kosher as part of his message.Its my 2 cents , this is my bedhouin way of understanding it.

So this is what I gather for myself from Mufti's discussion: Stick to halal meat as much as possible. But hunted animals, fish, or McDonald's burgers for that matter are not necessarily haram. However, should pronounce Bismillah before eating such things based on the cited Hadeeth. Warning and Disclaimer: Please do your own due diligence. Don't need to follow what I say here.

But the thing is, how would we know if the non-Muslim was hunting it while having some other deity in their mind? We weren't there. Perhaps in their minds some are pagans. The factor of 'we don't know' is a big issue. Best to just stick to this and avoid the gray areas. "Do not eat of (the animal) over which the name of Allah has not been pronounced (at the time of its slaughtering), for that is a transgression." 6:121.

Still many polythiest sacrifice animals specially Hindus do it in Kali puja. But these are annual rituals they performed. In commercial meat supply there is little or no chance of offering the animal to some pegan god. To be in safe side our local halal groceries are good option. Practically there is no chance of getting a pegan sacrificed meat in the market.

What about the method of slaughtering? Is it compulsory for the animal to be slaughtered by the halal cut ( cutting it's throat with the jugular vein), or can one consume meat that has been slaughtered in other ways, like Jhatka meat ( cutting the animal's head off in a single strike), electrocuting the animal, etc.

A sharp object which causes blood to flow has to be used. The blood needs to be drained. Since at least for red meat you need to mention the name of God on the animal prior to slaughter, jhatka would not be permissible for that.

Is that why many scholars distinguish between slaughtering larger animals vs chicken? Are you saying you have no problem with animals slaughtered by non kitabi and non Muslims like Buddhists, athiests, etc.

Well Mufti , the way I understand it is Halal is permissible not zabiha is the " so call Islamic way of slaughtering " not sure about that , but in the west it is considered to be a Christian nation so it is totally permissible . Imam Malik said you can say bismillah before or after it does not matter. I have been in slaughtering house in Canada , I do not see any difference is slaughtering the animal , they shoot in the head for beef while cutting the throat while it is still alive. My problem is the way the animals are treated , I do have a problem with this. We muslim have to improve this show an example how to treat animals.

I guess by your logic any meat (except pork) can be eaten by Muslims aslong as a prayer hasn't been said over it to a Pagan or false god. You make the point that you advise Muslims to stick to Halal meat as it gives us an identity. I get your point however wouldn't it be better if you just said eat whatever meat (aslong as it sticks to the principles stated above) to stop people from assuming non sacrificed meat (Islamic sacrifice) is Haram. I say this because the Qur'an directly warns against ascribing to God taboos which He has not instituted (@6). I appreciate that your stance is that these meats are not Haram but doesn't your idea of sticking to Halal meat as an identity indirectly contribute towards Muslims falling into the trap of passing judgement on people eating meat without blessing at sacrifice, and thus calling it Haram. Ascribing things to God for which He hasn't ascribed is a massive sin and a road we as Muslims should not go down (again I repeat I believe you haven't done this here).

So what about how the animals are raised? Particularly cattle. Does that not contribute to making it Halal? Not just the way it was slaughtered? We can see how in the meat industry the animals are tortured in many ways. So we just eat without some investigation of where our food comes from...

Just posted recently. “Oh, you people, eat from the earth what is halal and tayyib, and follow not the footsteps of the Shaytan …” (Surat al-Baqarah 2:168.) We forget about the Tayyib. I don't say don't eat meat, but it is our duty as Muslims to investigate it. That may not be practical, so perhaps go to local halal free range farms at the very least. If I cannot find ethical meat, there is nothing wrong with vegan and does not go against Islam. Nobody was pushing anything on you here lol. I was questioning. “(53)....so eat and pasture your cattle; verily, in this are signs for men endued with understanding.” (Qur’an 20:54) "A relationship of care and nurture for man’s good works are not limited to the benefit of the human species, but rather extend to the benefit of all created beings; and “there is a reward in doing good to every living thing.” (Al-Bukhari)
