Years ago I saw a cop taking a woman in handcuffs out of a Sears store one day. She was telling him she had no choice because she had no money and needed to feed her kids and he didn't know what it was like to have hungry kids. He stopped, held open her purse and looked inside. He said "You have three packs of cigarettes, and a 24oz beer in here, that's about $20.00 you can get a bunch of ramen and canned tuna or chicken for that. You stole a purse and a $50 shirt. I have been so broke that I had to eat ramen and canned tuna for three months. That's when i stopped smoking and drinking and acted like an adult instead of a spoiled brat, let's go.

I guess Martin Luther King never should have had the audacity to critize the society of the 1960s, since he cheated on his wife. I guess Nikola Tesla should have overcome his OCDs before he started with making groundbreaking inventions and innovate the future. I guess women in 1900 should've gotten their shit together before they complained about not having any voting rights. Sometimes your life isn't in order because of the way society is and/or external factors. There have also been numerous of pictures showing rooms in Jordan Peterson's house, and he is messy af.

Zizek is right on N Korea. How do you tell those people to put your house in order when they barely have anything to eat.
@cliftut
@cliftut Ай бұрын
Most fundamentally your "house" is your body and your self, and though the circumstances may be against you, it's all you have to work with. Your living area and the integrity of the cycles that maintain your life are the most immediate secondary manifestations of your internal order. You can work with society at the same time to some degree, and increasingly as you grow, but to neglect the former is unlikely to go well, as a disordered self that isn't committed to improving within whatever limited freedom you have is not likely to get effective results or even make good sense of what you see in the world. My thoughts. Best wishes!
@cliftut
@cliftut Ай бұрын
@@republica7337 The same way you can point out that some people in concentration camps found ways to develop deep strength and some didn't, and the former sometimes contributed to the creative challenging, undermining, revelation, and historical knowledge of the systems they found themselves in. The circumstances were against them, and probably some chance and personal traits contributed, but if they hadn't made the personal choice of who to _be_ then their contributions wouldn't exist. The point isn't really to blame those who didn't or couldn't make that choice, but to make known that the choice exists for those who can, and we can only make it for ourselves. The interior of each person and their secret freedom or bondage is a mystery. We should do what we can to help each other, but our own internal freedom and health will determine how well we can do that, and sharing that message with each other helps us meet each other halfway. That's my take and interpretation, at least.

I watched this "debate" a while back. JP and Zizek actually agree quiet a lot. It's more like a discussion, a great exchange of thoughts. So the tribalistic comments under that video really puzzled me. Same symptom seems to present in your video here as well. I looked up Zizek after watching that video. His thing is actually critiquing the 20th-century communism. I think JP said early in the "debate" that he thought Zizek should start his own school of thoughts rather than clinging to the banner of Marxism/communism.
@cliftut

That's accurate to my memory of the conversation as well, including the factionalism. In fact, you could hear some "factionalists" cheering "their side" in the crowd, and both Peterson AND Zizek made statements to the crowd to try to lead them beyond simple side-taking, as I recall. The full exchange really is a phenomenon and worth watching, and the (partially adversarial) excitement in the crowd and comment section gives me a funny combination of hope and concern. Best wishes! There's always hope if we can choose and risk to build some faith in life and the learning process within ourselves. Risk is always there, whether we face it or not, anyway.

It seems the only way people can debate Dr Peterson is to misinterpret his words, twist them around and argue against something he never said in the first place. This leaves Peterson spending most of his time correcting their version of what he said. I've noticed this over and over. When he criticized the compelled speech law in Canada it was twisted around implying he was transphobic, and he constantly had to explain himself to these sanctimonious idiots who were trying to demonize him. Dr Peterson rarely says anything that he hasn't thought deeply about, so you'd better have all your ducks in a row before attacking him.

I've noted Slavoj's preoccupation with his nose, but I've never bothered to wonder why. That's because when I was in college, I studied econ under a professor who cleared his throat more than 150 times during each class. I wondered why until I learned that he suffered a throat wound on Guadalcanal in WWII. My wont was to make light of his idiosyncrasy until that knowledge changed my mirth into respect for a man who risked his life so I could attend college in peace. So instead of poking fun at Slavoj, I simply admire his contributions to philosophy. I have learned.

Žižek objects to the idea of getting your house in order before you criticize the world because the world society is responsible for many of the situations people find themselves in. But you have to identify the situation you are in and take responsibility for the choices you make. Society isn’t to blame for a man impregnating a woman and abandoning her. Society isn’t responsible for a student in an urban ghetto not reading. Society is not responsible for people not regulating their own emotions. People can restrain themselves from engaging in acts leading to pregnancy. Books are available to any and everyone. Emotions are absolutely under the control of the individual. You must exercise the habit of questioning yourself and answering honestly. To presume you can question others without first questioning yourself is arrogant.

That said, I agree with Peterson's ethos, because the only tool we have to work with is our self, it's our only locus of action, and the quality of that tool determines the quality of our results. You can try to fix a broken society with a broken self, or you can try to fix a broken society with an effective self. The "clean and functioning household" is not the deciding factor - though it helps in its own way - but a "clean and functioning self". Society and circumstances may impose limits on that process and how far it can proceed, that's part of the inexpressible tragedy of life, but it's also all we have in some sense, and faith in life and the process of learning and growth gives us a chance, especially as it helps us learn to work together with faithful others as well. Looking at it another way, when the conditions in a society reach the point where enough people decide that process isn't worth it or there's no spare time or energy for it, the "easier" choice becomes or seems to become to destroy that system or enact haphazard attempts at fixes from where they're at. This likely leads the "natural death" of that society. The same happens to a body when enough of its cells or information and distribution pathways break down, and sometimes the cause really does come from "outside". Yet the continual fervent battle of the cells that can still manage to function, order themselves, and cooperate is still the best chance the body has. And as in an imperfect adaptation like diabetes or trauma, sometimes a difficult or imperfect solution is the result, but is better than nothing, and in some cases can even be reversed, improved, or managed later, to some degree. You could say we only live because enough of our cells are imbued with a kind of "faith" that "putting and keeping their house in order" so that they can contribute is still worthwhile whatever the rest of the body is doing. I know all too well it's easier said than done, but it's worth trying. Or rather, it's up to each of us to decide whether to have faith that it is. Life won't always prove to you it is worth it in the ultimate sense, that's the essential choice, the faith. Both comfort and suffering end, and we don't always know when. But that faith can also be its own reward, bringing meaning into even the darkest places. Hope that gives someone food for thought. Best wishes, fellow strugglers.

Yes, so many layers in Žižek’s philosophy, it’s understandable it could go over your head. Not a fan of his, but you missed the point by miles. What he’s saying is house and outside influence eachother, there’s no inside without the outside. Peterson is saying cleand the inside then criticize the outside. Žižek is saying some of the inside mess is comming from the outside, recognize that. Inside and outside are two sides of the same coin

It's very weird to recognise two aspects of my father (R.I.P.), in both these men. One is the deep Jungian thinker/dreamer, the other the socialist/marxist economist. These two men are much more than these two-word typifications, ofcourse. I want to point out that the Jugoslavian communism was a very liberal one (in terms of ecomony). The most brutal events around Jugoslavia were probably the genocides during the wars over Bosnian and Servian territory and etnicity. When states fought for independance.

5;18 'Large clinical literature on optimum reslience, try to get to someplace better, and you have a map for a solution to someplace better, confront things you are avoiding, a process of confronting your challenges, psychology agrees, we have an unbearable challenge that life is malevolance and suffering, you should confront the darkness to do good, the psychological message is to confront the devil and your tortured mentality, you have the best chance to transcend it.' [Let's translate: Confront whatever difficult challenges you encounter and conquering them will advance you in dealing and succeeding in life. I already learned that from Thomas the Train, Dora the Explorer, Berentain Bears, but JP used a lot of clinical literature to figure that out. Sorry Millionaire, JP didn't shut down anyone. He just gave us a Sesame St lesson.]

Jorden was correct, if you start very young g to know how to make your bed! It’s a proven fact that humans learn person achievement,, order, responsibility, Respect, individual thinking, So it gives them a good start in the world to work out problems they may arise going forward, instead of I am a victim .

"Moderately conservative communist" is a long winded way of saying "populists are assholes", or "get rid of all hippies" - Zizek is no communist. Cynical reformist, is probably a more accurate description. Zizek criticises the 'image driven society', and if Peterson wanted to address that, then he didn't.
