In this study, the authors report a new archaeological find confirming a possible direct contact, namely, a fragment of a bone covered with runes from the end of the 6th century, found in a Slavic settlement near the Czech Breclav in Lany.
#Runes are an alphabetic letter called #Futhark, which was used among Germanic tribes and beyond. The original series of runes of 24 characters is called the Elder Futhark, which was used in the same form by all Germanic tribes ~ until 700-750. Later, the younger futhark developed, where the number of symbols was reduced to 16. It was used for most of the Viking Age and therefore constitutes the largest set of about 6,000 runic inscriptions that have survived.
Finds of Germanic inscriptions on the older Futhark are less than 100, dating back to the end of the 3rd - the beginning of the 7th centuries. Most of them were found on metal objects in 6th century graves and contain personal names.
The new find displays six of the last eight runes of the elder fuarque, making it the first find to contain the last part of the elder fuarque in South Germanic inscriptions, and the only one found in a non-Germanic context.
In their work, the researchers emphasize that in addition to runology, materials science and scientific analysis of both inscriptions and the objects on which they are inscribed can provide additional valuable information. For example, organic bone material with runic inscriptions made it possible to accurately date the find using radiocarbon dating, and by analyzing ancient DNA to determine the type of animal to which the bone belonged. In addition, the authors of the work used optical and scanning electron microscopes to verify the authenticity of the inscription using wear analysis.
