My two favorites songs by Slayer! So many of the similar bands went all Cannibal Corpse or Napalm Death...too fast and the singing in more like cookie monster than singing. Hearing slow, methodical building of guitars and drums, then the powerful vocals; that is the Slayer I love! Iron Maiden is also very good at this, as was Pantera, and Metallica.

The Drummer is Dave Lombardo, one of the greatest of all time. My personal favorite Slayer song is "Silent Scream" from the South of Heaven album. The thing about Slayer is that they delve into the darkest parts of humanity, everything from Satanism, human sacrifice to serial killers and the Holocaust. They also have a bunch of really good anti-war songs and songs about vampirism.

Everyone called it all that stuff back then before the millennials came along and began freaking out trying to put everyone into tidy little categories. I remember them being called Death Metal in ‘85, but many would also call it Speedmetal, and also Thrash, but Thrash Metal, but Thrash alone was another term being thrown around for Hardcore Punk in the early 80’s.. that’s what I was into, cause Metal Hair Bands were just pretty weak. By the time, Slayer came around, we were relieved to see Metal was finally growing its balls back, and obviously influenced by the better Hardcore Punk bands of the early 80’s (which plenty of that stuff still hits harder than a lot of Slayer).

@@auscryptocurrency1162 😂😂😂 I guess my comment went right over your head there. I wasn’t saying you’re wrong, I’m just clarifying that I personally saw people being confused about it, even in underground music zines (which I was very involved with back in those days). So, I guess, yeah, you’re right, technically (in hindsight), but you’re way off as far as everyone being on the same page about it the moment it hit the shelves. Also.. if you’re so “old school” I’m assuming you should remember THRASHER skateboarding magazine which dawned in ‘81, right?? But then Slayer didn’t release anything till ‘83. Wtf?? 🤷 Would you wanna try to say the Thrasher skate crew were all ((strictly)) metal guys? You do realize that D.R.I. was being called a THRASH band, right? You think they were “metal”?? I guess Metal Blade Records did, but they didn’t tour with any metal bands that year when I saw em on tour. Why not? You DO remember Speed Metal, right?? Late 70’s-early 80’s?? Motörhead was lumped into that genrefication too.. but Lemmy came from fucking Hawkwind and before that grew up a devoted BEATLES FAN?? 😂😂😂 Venom and Voivod, Impaler and Exciter were considered Speed Metal too.. they were all happening around the same time too, so you see the confusion people had?? Maybe you fancy yourself as a sitting boardmember of the “Official Council of Metalheads” who’s gotta cry foul cause some Dude might call it “Death” Metal, not “Thrash” but to me it comes off as really petty and intellectually pretentious to rigidly classify and compartmentalize everything to begin with, because at the very beginning of any movement in music history, the very first guys who did it were just pushing boundaries and trying something NEW. It’s ridiculous that people wanna discard those periods of grey areas before all the asshole zine reviewers had a circle jerk meeting and decided to “officially” label it this or that. I remember people calling it all kinds of what I mentioned whether or not they had it “right” or not doesn’t really matter ultimately, does it? I certainly don’t remember any declaration appearing on their first LP when it came out saying “THIS IS THRASH METAL”.. I just remember it was generally a lower budget metal album by a band called SLAYER, titled “Show No Mercy”. But thanks for setting the record straight, all the same, pal. 🙄

*One thing you need to know about Slayer is a lot of songs are sung from the perspective of some pretty evil people. It's not them condoning it, it's them calling them out for it. They have a song called 'South of Heaven' that some assume is about hell and embracing it... it's not. South of Heaven is Earth and the song is about the evil we do to eachother right here every day. So it's important to know this about them because if you don't, lyrically, it can be easy to think otherwise.*

100% they didn't condone it at all, but people like to judge a book by it's cover

Jay & Amber, You’ll love Lake Street Dive’s songs " Hypotheticals”, “Nobody's Stopping You Now” and “You Go Down Smooth”!!!! The great voice of Rachael Price, talented musicians and harmonies!! They all sing and 4 of 5 are the songwriters!!! This US based band frequently tours North America, Australia, and Europe. Time for an Indie Band!! Other great older songs “Use Me Up” and “Bad Self Portraits”. Can’t wait to see them in September!!!!!

Odd video to bring up LSD, but I love it! They are fantastic. Caught 'em opening for The Avett Brothers, in Santa Barbara, CA. Just awesome.

That drummer is Dave Lombardo. He's a monster behind a Drum Kit. There is a Live at Wembley version of "War Ensemble" here on KZbin that is absolutely amazing. You won't be disappointed. THAT is a representation of the REAL Slayer. Lead singer and Bassist Tom Araya has Perfect Hair.

Prepare yourself for Slayer. Angel of Death is about a nazi surgeon who did experiments on jews without anesthesia. South of Heaven isn't about Hell, it's about life hear on Earth. Silent Scream is about abortion. All are great songs with a dark subject matter. Music that parents don't want their kids listening to but now we are grown and are the parents. My daughter and son loves Slayer.

I love how you cut out Metallica and put in Testament!! They do need to hear Dog Faced Gods or Return to Serenity though.

You’re absolutely Stupid for not including Metallica, I don’t care what they became later on but in the 80s you can’t deny the music they put out!!! Pure Thrash!!!!!!

To me, Raining Blood is the quintessential Slayer song. Fast, aggressive, thrash metal at its most fierce.
