There was an idea in music called a hook. It could be a riff or a chorus, usually, which caught your attention and grounded the song in your ear, so that you would wait for it to come around again. It could appear right away, or it could appear later on, but it had to be repeated. Some bands were great at, others captured lightning in a bottle. It's the part of the song that you find yourself humming on your own, or makes the song immediately recognizable. The opening riff to Smoke On the Water, Iron Man or Enter Sandman. When I hear a song for the first time, a truly memorable song, it grabs me. By the heart, by the shoulders, or by the throat, depending on the song. If that hook isn't there, it's just a throwaway song.

Stick with me. You said, "What is more badass than pharaohs?" I mean, it worked for Iron Maiden, right? So here we go... The Charis Sellick duck... with long flowy locks, a leather studded collar, and a Was-sceptre... riding a camel... inside Luxor Temple... yeah. YEAH. And and and and the scene is constrained inside, get this... IT'S INSIDE A TRIANGLE SHAPE... you know, to invoke thoughts of pyramids w/o actually showing them, see? And below the bottom level of the trangle shape, a single line: #ThrasherMetal ... Shit, Charis, I might as well print money for you. ;)

Good breakdown of Slayer's music... 👍FYI - Slayer's songs were usually very short and to-the-point (Their 1986 album 'Reign in blood' was only 30 minutes long w/ 10 tracks of fury 🔥🔥) ... (Late guitarist) Jeff Hanneman (the blond one) admitted he would get bored if Slayer played at a slower pace for too long... but Hanneman was the one who came up w/ 'Seasons in the Abyss' (he would contribute the slower, eerie tracks by Slayer) and Tom Araya (bass & vocals) wrote the lyrics about madness - the breakdown of the mind... And yes, Tom Araya was not the high-calibre singer like Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden) or Rob Halford (Judas Priest)... but his intense vocals were perfect for Slayer's music. Slayer didn't film any music videos from previous album in the 80's... Like Metallica before 1989, they chose to let their live concerts do the talking... and they spoke loud & harsh 🤘🤘 But for their 1990 album 'Season in the Abyss'... producer (and label head) Rick Rubin sold the band the idea of filming this music video in Egypt... It got on MTV and the album sold gold in the US (half million copies) and is their most commercially successful album to date. Slayer spent much of 1991 touring relentlessly as both 'Reign in blood' (1986) and 'South of heaven' (1988) went gold... Their shows were so intense that even Megadeth had a hard time placating their frenzied audience... Their mosh pits were the stuff of legends (I would know!) Unfortunately, 1992 brought the dismissal of drummer Dave Lombardo... Paul Bostaph (drums) replaced him on tour and joined Slayer ... Their 1994 album 'Divine intervention' charted at #8 in the US and sold gold, but it wasn't the best album creatively. But Slayer persevered and kept the metal faith... their career took off again after a decline in the 90's by 2001 and Dave Lombardo (drums) rejoined Slayer by 2002 (until 2012). Slayer songs are typically short, intense and fast 🔥like - 'War ensemble' ... 'Ghosts of war'... 'Angel of death' ... 'Hell waits'... 🤘🤘 But they also deliver some stellar musical moments... songs like - 'Dead skin mask'... 'South of Heaven' ... '213' ... 'Spill the blood'...
