I am a true devotee of Wild Turkey 101, so I'm not surprised that it took #1. I have a friend who's husband is a whisky fan, and he was offended when I said that WT101 was my favorite bourbon. He felt that if it wasn't at least $100 a bottle, then it wasn't worth drinking. Needless to say, he was even more offended when I told him the stuff he'd been drinking all night and praising was WT101. Great stuff! (I also like Old Grandad 114)

I first started drinking whiskey about two years ago. Since then I've tried about 30 different whiskeys. None of them have stood out as much as Wild Turkey 101. This is not only due to the unique flavors - sweet and leathery upfront with a profound fiery finish... but due to the incredibly low price point. When you take into consideration the flavor, price point, and availability, nothing beats the 101.

I'm glad you were able to select Evan Williams bottled in bond over the Early Times bottle, because the controversy of the Early Times bottle is that the bottling and liquid inside have changed compared to as recently as two years ago due to production changes from the distillery.

Let me start by saying that I really appreciate the time you guys put into these videos. I truly enjoy watching them. That being said, I always go into these "blind" taste test videos with a lot of hope that the test will actually remain blind until the very end, but so far, the ones I've seen never do. In my opinion, other than knowing which bottles are in the line-up ahead of time, none of the brands should be revealed until the very end. And when possible, not knowing ANY of the line-up is ideal... The ability to "narrow down" the playing field as you exclude brands that don't make the cut, screws with the minds of the tasters and subsequently potentially skews the results. For whatever reason, whether rational or not, we bourbon/whiskey enthusiasts develop emotional attachments to various brands and seem to have a very difficult time separating ourselves from those attachments once certain brand names are revealed. Additionally, I believe that having "neck-pours" of freshly open bottles (Such as OF and EW in this video) involved in a blind taste test with previously opened bottles that have had plenty of time to breath, skews the results right off the bat. I'm sure I'm not telling you guys anything you don't already know here, but often times, the first pour (or two) from a freshly cracked bottle will have a heavier ethanol presence which can overpower and effectively cancel out some of the flavors that are much more prominent in a bottle that has had time to open up and breath. And this, in my experience, is especially true with the less expensive (but still delicious) whiskies. I believe for a blind taste test to be truly fair, all the bottles should be somewhat close to the same level, and should have 4-6 ounces (at the least) already absent. I would be very interested to see this same test done under these slightly more stringent guidelines with these same bottles. I wouldn't be surprised if the results were a bit different, although, I believe Makers Mark would still come in at or near the bottom. I LOVE their Private Select stuff, especially store and/or club picks, but their flagship bourbon is unfortunately rather boring. Just my $.02... On a completely different note, have you guys ever had or considered having guests in any of your videos? I'm a genuine nobody in the whiskey world, but I think this would be a lot of fun, and would happily volunteer, as would many other whiskey nobodies out there, I'm sure... Hope you guys had a great Thanksgiving!

Has someone who deals in the science field I have to completely agree. When you know what is in the line up you skew your opinions even if it's a little bit. For a true blind taste test, you can't know what the lineup is or the sample list.

I'm brand new to drinking bourbon, and your channel. I have learned a LOT from you guys, so first of all I want to thank you for doing these videos! One of the things I have learned from your channel (and others) is that the level of the pour changes the flavors, therefore I don't think this was as fair as it could have been. The banana flavor of the Old Fo would probably come out more in a deeper pour. The Turkey 101 was certainly in a really good spot for the flavors to shine, and having picked up on your fondness of it anyway, I am not surprised that it won out. Maybe sometime you could revisit this lineup sometime and get past the neck pour of them all beforehand, and maybe do as others said and not reveal ANY of them before the end. Just from your comments I was picking up on what some of them were, such as the Maker's Mark. Overall, I understand that this is subjective, not scientific. I really do appreciate your channel, as it have enhanced my experience, and you guys have turned me on to some really great buys, such as the Early Times BiB!

If it had been done that way, it would have made the position of Old Forester, for example, even more surprising. It's likely the tasters would have assumed OF was near the top, then when the results were disclosed, would have been shocked to find it near the bottom.

I love all of these choices. But when it comes to blind tastings, I actually try to limit it to two or three choices. Once it goes over that, the taste portions of my brain start to get a little rattled with each sip, and I start to over or under estimate the flavors of what I'm sipping four or five sips in, and it's hard for me to give a fair assessment, especially when they're so close, quality wise.

@kevin18732 жыл бұрын
Thank you Kurt and Trenton as well for sharing this taste testing with us because I was also curious about what your winner would be from your previous video displaying your 5 top $20 Bourbons. I was really shocked Old Forester got eliminated but blind taste testings are super difficult. With that being said, Bourbons don't really have a large flavor spectrum as say compared to whiskeys. With Bourbons the flavor spectrum is quite small, you either get sweet, caramel, maple syrup, vanilla, and the likes or you get the opposite end. Bitter, leather, oak, spice with subtle notes of all in between. Again with that being said it really just depends on which end of the spectrum you enjoy more. But that's the amazing thing about alcohol is that there's a drink out there for just about anyone and that's really awesome. I'm with you and Trenton. I definitely prefer the more traditional sweeter, caramel, vanilla, maple syrup side of bourbon with that well-balanced oak flavor coming through as well. I mean it's like candy in a glass and that's the perfect adult beverage in my opinion. Thanks again Kurt and Trenton for sharing another awesome SBLbasement Bourbon video 🙂

@@Glock2201 over the past 4 months I kind of bought everything on the shelf. Found out I love rye and really dislike Old Forester bourbon (bought the 86,100, and 120) I can see why others enjoy it, nevertheless it's just not for me. The tin cup 10 is very good if you enjoy oak. Highly recommend but it's a bit over priced for the proof. Shouldn't this be duplicated over ice? In another video you spoke of going with a cube when enjoying Wild Turkey 101. Interested to see WT come out on top. It appeared to be a marginal win and it may be interesting to see this same line-up tested on another day to see if a new day and mood will yield different results. I'll be looking for reviews on American single malts

Love that Evan Williams BiB got in. We need a Heaven Hill representative in this lineup! The Early Times is an amazing bourbon, but made by the same company as Old Forester.
@kvmedman62172 жыл бұрын
PS. My order would be 1 and 2 switch between Wlid Turkey and Old Forester depending on the day, 3 Old Grand Dad 114, 4 Evan Williams BiB, 5 Buffalo Trace, 6 Maker's Mark.

This is a great comment. Didn’t realize the range of distilleries that are represented on that bar in the video. A great range when you think about it. Speaks volumes to the commitment to excellence by American distillers.

Blind tastings are so revealing, because the power of suggestion is so strong. I've seen Pappy go down hard in some blind tastings. Another great video, Kurt. And I agree with Trenton...I always considered Maker's Mark to be the "cheap" mixer bourbon on my shelf. Just goes to show.

Look I am very new to the bourbon world, I have been hearing so much about Wild Turkey 101, I thought that maybe it was overhyped. I bought one and I can say it lives up to the hype. I usually avoid high proof bourbon because I’m a newbie, but 101 is going to be a constant with me.

I love this review and want to thank you all for motivating me to enjoy Bourbons and whiskeys neat instead of just taking shots. I have all of those except the Evans Williams but I also have 22 other bourbons. I think you should have round 2 and see if both your pallets stay the same. I’m up for the challenge myself and will conduct that here in the near future. I have pretty much bought all the bottles that you’ve recommended and just want to say Thanks once again for awesome reviews and being so truthful in your remarks. You huge fan Josh in upstate NY. I tried Old Forester and Knob Creek 9 year 120p, and I am not a fan of either. I found both to be very harsh at first, to the point that the flavors can't even be detected. Once you have sipped a few times, they grow on you. My go-to is still makers mark. It's affordable, looks good in a decanter, and has a good balance of smooth sipping and rich flavoring.

Glad to see you put this blind tasting together...It really helps put $20.00 plus/minus into perspective. Coming in new to Bourbons on a more serious level, this is a great list of 6 to buy and try without breaking the bank...heck, you can get all 6 here in Oregon (state run) for $161.70 to be exact. What a great way for anyone interested in getting their start down the Bourbon path. You could even sub in a couple of Rye selections and still impress your guests...more importantly, put you in their right direction improving your palate to a higher end, more sophisticated level. Thanks so much!

We all have different opinions on what is best at this price point however I appreciate the beauty of tastings and enjoying whiskey together. I have to say, I personally LOVE the six initial choices you have put forth. I would have added ET BiB and Rebel 100 to the mix BUT, these six are as solid as you can get. I also can't help but to rejoice that Jimmy Russell came out on top in your tastings. Such great choices that hit WAY above the price point. *high five* for a great video, and thank you!
