George, What a wonderful idea and great use of the 80/20. In fairness to due diligence I'd recommend contacting a Mercedes mechanic to ensure the running boards won't interfere with any maintenance procedures, access points, hydraulic lifts, or tow vehicles. I'd also consider adding a solid piece connecting the leading edges in the front to act as a deflector for vegetation, branches, roots, etc at camp sites, off road sites, and trailheads.

WOW! This van just gets better with each episode! Options, options, options. On one of the KZbin channels I watch, I saw a white plastic tube the builder mounted on top at the side to store his rug. He said it is the way many plumbers carry piping and made his van look more like a construction van. I thought of that when you mentioned lashing the rug to the running boards. I’m thinking the tapered end will look best, but which taper is hard to decide, Art Deco or wing style, they’re both great options. I know you’ll choose whatever is best for both the function and the look. The production of your videos is as top notch as your van build. Can’t wait to see more.
@HumbleRoad5 жыл бұрын
Thank you Maitilda! I have seen the big white PVC pipe used as a container on the roof. Sneaky! Very sneaky! One of my viewers suggested the PVC tube to store the rug. I think it might be too small in diameter as well as being rather thick walled. I might have to get a short piece and do some testing.

TAPER IN. Ensure your nice, wide runner will clear 99% of curbs. My rig is 8' wide and 8.5" wide with mirrors, so I m constantly trying to pull as close to the curb as possible. I have 7" door ground clearance in my swing out mini-bus doors (for me, that is the lowest clearance point I have and it is an issue sometimes!!!!) Consider if you have to parallel park, the "cut in" is probably a better idea. Consider if you are off road and have to wiggle out of a dirt berm edge next to your van (been there, done that). Just saying, make sure you have plenty of ground clearance besides the fuel tank. This item is a real low wind profile, but it might be something where you still want a rubber air dam along that front edge that won't swirl piles of dirt from your front wheel up onto the runner as you drive down dirt roads or pick up water from the road after a rainstorm, a rubber dam might also protect your stuff you load on there from getting even more muddy or wet.
@gouddude5 жыл бұрын
I've only read a few comments, but the one concern I have is parallel parking and curbs or something similar. I vote for the straight cut at the rear to follow the seam of the door and van body. I love your thoughtful, pragmatic and artistic aesthetic approach to your build out.

Three comments, George: 1) Are you able to move all the supports forward? If so, both the back and the front of the slats could be minimally cantilevered, obviating the need for the front-most custom support. 2) If it were me, I'd cut the rear of the slats perpendicular to the van. No rake at the back. 3) A PVC pipe could be mounted at the rear of the step. Capping it would make it weather-resistant, so carrying a rolled up rug, etc. would be very doable. Nice work, as always, sir. Glad you're feeling better.
@HumbleRoad5 жыл бұрын
(1) in order to move any of the supports, new holes would have to be drilled. And forward is not possible because of a large chassis frame member dividing the support groups into two. I only have to adjust the design of the front most support slightly. (2) I like the idea of running boards all the way to the rear wheel well. That would require a whole new set of supports because of the mish mosh of chassis stuff. (3) The typical PVC pipes are (a) too small in diameter and (b) too thick walled. I'm thinking a custom enclosure using the poly form material I used for my cabinet back walls. Thin, flexible and waterproof.

I like the idea of tapering it back in. Another thing I think would dress it out, and perhaps save your chins from getting beat up, would be to have some rubber end pieces to be installed at the end of each railing. That would be nice, and classy. Beautiful job you're doing.

Great idea about the rubber caps. Will make a difference to your shins. And if you scrape anything, it will leave rubber marks not gouges.
@lass-inangeles75644 жыл бұрын
Taper at other end same as front end. And put rubber caps on the rod ends as someone mentioned below. Looks so sleek George, nice work! Genius to put the rubber treads in using that non slip tape for cabinet panels. So clever. Plus, it keeps the dirt out from boot scraping and mud/ dust. Not sure about putting a rolled up mat tucked under the treads. What happens if it comes loose, and catches on rear tires? Or flies into the windshield of car behind you? There is too much potential for danger here. Especially if the rolled up ends allow wind forces to billow it out continuously while driving. No bungee is strong enough to withstand hurricane force winds at 90 mph. What bugs on the mat? Just some dust. Nothing to worry about . Put a trash bag over the mat and spray with insecticide and close the ends to kill anything. This should please your finicky viewer. There are no ants, fleas, ticks, mites that want to live on a plastic mat. The dust bunnies under your bed at home are much worse than any dusty campground. Your present solution is just fine. Sewer hose idea is a good one though. Hose clamps to secure the black tube to the aluminum frame. This would also make a nice broom, umbrella, fishing rod holder.

Nice one George! I'd go for a straight cut (to match the vertical line of the door) but I'm sure it will look GREAT either way. I'm worried that even though it's inside the mirror clearance line, it's so low down that it could be clipped on a tight turn around a kerb (the classic long wheel base ding). Just needs a little extra driving care, or here's an idea, mount an extra obstacle sensor on the outer bar (l'm presuming you have parking sensors).

Taper for sure, especially front leading edge. Taper back in, hmmn, maybe, but what I like about the way it is now is that it follows the wind direction along the van, makes it seem like it is moving while standing still :-). One suggestion might be to go easy on the lashing on the running boards--did that once (and only once) on my B190 E150 Airstream van that had great running boards, stuff gets uniquely filthy with road grime and was a pain on a rainy day getting in and out--keep your ingresses and egresses clear, so to speak... thanks for the video, always fun to get the updates.

About that road clearance: note that the further away from the axles you are, the higher you should be if you don't want to risk scraping or getting stuck. For example on my ProMaster, the rear axle beam clears maybe 6 inches, but the exhaust mid-way clears a solid 12.

I love it!!!!! Reverse taper is my vote. On my 2007 Airstream Interstate, there is a pretty wide step that goes the full length on both sides. Love it. The only thing that I dislike is that the step is positioned such that I have to get on my hands and knees to dump - though after a few days out, I can manage it a bit easier. BTW, when dumping tanks, I put down a wee dog pad for my knees for protection of clothing. It is just heavy enough not to blow up like a plastic garbage does (this sounded a little weird) 🐶

George - As always another GREAT video. I agree a wider step is better so no "side stepping" needed. My only concern is (and I don't have a solution) eventually I'm going to wipe that wide step off the side of the van. I know it sticks out less than the mirror - but if I was to hit the mirror with something it will fold or give a touch... that step is going to wipe out the under edge of the van. (Ok, that sounds a little dramatic but you get the idea). But realistically there are times gas stations or narrow roads where things are low and you could drive the mirror over the yellow posts at a gas station or over a mailbox on a country road but not if the running board is so far out. You might be thinking I need to drive better... and truly that might be the solution : /
@HumbleRoad5 жыл бұрын
I agree Tammie, at some point the driver has to take responsibility for his actions. I drove a 40 foot class A with zero visibility for a dozen years. Highways, country roads, city streets. I was careful and cautious. The only issue I had was within the first week of ownership. It was a bad one, no one was hurt, just my ego... :-)
@douglastong32085 жыл бұрын
I assume you plan to add a PVC or aluminum tube to store your rug underneath (for weatherproofing). Will the rug roll up tight enough to fit in the tube? Of course, you also have space at the back to create another cargo storage rack, if you plan on redesigning your bike rack. And your driver-side step might help to balance the look of the van, as well as help improve L-R weight distribution, but it doesn't really seem necessary, other than helping to reach something on the roof.

Do the mirrors fold in to narrow the van’s profile for tight spaces (ferries, garages, whatever)? Driver’s side: is it just inseam or is it “nimbleness”? Not sure if you really need to appeal to broad market however - this is very custom build, ingeniously and beautifully so!!!!

Hi George! I love your builds and vids. I’m hooked! I imagine you’ve made a decision on the final shape, but in case you haven’t, I think it would look really nice if you taper the ends towards the center of the boards, ever so slightly; say 1/8 “ (or 1/10”). Better yet, extrapolate the contour of the rear door on a flat photo taken from this video for the rear shape. It would complement the design very nicely. Perhaps there’s a video of the completed build. Can’t wait to see it!

Hey George!! Nice concept and engineering of the running board! Something is making me twitch a bit which involves the overall aesthetics... Are you considering painting this great van something other than the stock white with the black body "band"? With the art deco aluminum 80/20, a full body spray of Mercedes selenite grey (or something similar...) would make your art work pop and make this project even more badass!! I know this is purely subjective, but the aluminum would dance off of a relatively dark canvass... You'll have plenty of insulation if you're worried about heat generated from a darker exterior color. I don't think you have mentioned painting her, but the work truck white just ain't doing it for me... Oh yeah!! Almost forgot, because like Alice's mother in the Honeymooners, I'm a BLABBER MOUTH!!... reverse taper would be cool!!

Just a thought... do your side mirrors fold in? if that's the case, will the running boards be wider than the folded mirrors, and if so, will that be an issue? It you fold in mirrors for a temporary tighter space, the running boards not folding in could be an issue. But then again, I've never been in a situation where I needed to fold in mirrors...
@HumbleRoad5 жыл бұрын
Agreed. In my years of van travel, I have not once needed to fold in my mirrors. And I have used ferries several times. I also know of one particular high end builder whose running boards are fixed, molded fiberglass and extend out further than mine. Have not heard of any issues there.
@NicoVeenkamp5 жыл бұрын
Humble Road how about when you turn corners into tight spaces. You may clear your mirror but the back end of your van will have a tighter circle. So you need to be aware of that when turning. All in all, a great idea. Also less electrical and mechanical problems. I’ve seen several issues cropping up on forums where people complain about their step boards no longer go in or refuse to come out due to electrical or mechanical issues. Great job!
@HumbleRoad5 жыл бұрын
Nico, you've just made the case for a reverse taper! Yes, simplicity of design AND functionality are the two rules in this build. If this initial dimension proves to be too deep, it is easily adjusted by loosening a few screws and removing a couple of runners.
@taylorbad5 жыл бұрын
As always, well executed. That said, I think there will come a day when you will rue installing this step. Granted it is within the drip line of the mirror, but often obstacles--the unseen, immovable ones--are below the level of the mirror. The mirror won't get whacked but the step will and considering how well made this is, it will create serious damage to the vehicle. Also, lashing carpets, tents, etc. to this step while you are driving in the rain will totally drench them with water coming up from the front right tire, won't it? If you keep it, I like the rear taper to come forward--why have a step or material at the point of the doorway you can't use? Is it just a matter of visual proportionality?

Both tapered towards the rear, the look designers use to make a vehicle 🚗 look like its moving fast standing still, long as to the back tire if you like, set your carpet on the step before you load it into the 5” carpet tube in front of the rear wheel, great idea by the way for any rv. Also some amount of stop at passengers front door to hold ones foot from slipping forward and down breaking an ankle. Sorry for the ugly addition to the rearward art deco, but slippery feet will slide when wet or very dusty. Your doing an excellent job by the way,i very much enjoy your skills n good nature !😷

You developed those running boards out of ground beef? Impressive.

95% lean, baby. BTW, you wouldn't happen to be the Jet Tool company, would you? I could use a few perks...

@@HumbleRoad No, I'm not that Jet but my middle-name is George. Hey, I just noticed that you don't eat meat.

Hi Humble.👋 I can’t really tell but would a person of any size or age automatically without thinking or planning be able to be sure footed when the exit the passenger seat? I have nixed any rig that doesn’t have a full wide step at every entrance. It’s just sensible design IMO (and universal).

Mishu- that may be a valid concern in an unfamiliar public place that you only frequent once. But if this was your van, I think intuitively, you would acclimate yourself quite well. As you would in your own home or car. Having said that, I did mention concern for that "gully" up front there and will most likely adjust the runners as far forward as they can go and maybe shape them into a slight curve to satisfy my aesthetic appetite.

Humble Road if u adjust the runners forward that might impact how things will look at the other end. Since this would increase the distance from the rear wheel well to the end of the runner I am thinking a straight edge perpendicular to the van would look better. Of whatever your eye tells u to do will look and work great. I am in favor of your idea to close the gully up front too. IMO lashing to it would take away from the elegance of this fine vehicle. It would give u options though!! Fantastic work all the way around though. Thank u for another informative entertaining and thought provoking video. You must never sleep!! But I hope you do!!

Humble Road I’m 100% convinced it will be perfection under your fine craftsmanship but really sir you overestimate the number of functioning grey matter I have left that prevents me from tripping over objects my brain knows are there! I need all the help I can get! Lol.

I think you've just inspired the solution to a rear rack on my build. Thank you, now on to your floorboards why not extend it to the rear wheel well and mirror the angle there. I think it would be more visually pleasing connecting the wheel wells. And it could give you a larger footprint for an awning or anything else that mind of yours could envision. 👍

I agree with your vision of connecting the wheel wells. But the chassis framework in that area would make design and attachment nearly impossible without cutting and drilling the chassis.

Humble Road I'm sure you will find a way...even if you have to drill.

Tapered in, also what about one less , to make less wide still will be more room than others.. Just a thought... looking good
