What’s the best advice that I would give to everyone, regardless of whether you’re suffering from insomnia or whether you are a good sleeper?
If you just want to get more out of your sleep…
Wake up at the same time every day.
We have an internal body clock that regulates us, when you wake up at the same time every day you are resetting yourself and telling your brain that, at the same time every day, you want to feel awake and you want to feel good.
You want your body to release the right hormones at the right times, and this will really affect your circadian rhythms.
Circadian rhythm is the physiological processes that run over a 24-hour period - your temperature, your mood regulation, your appetite regulation, and your sleep wake cycle.
So, if you keep your wake up time regular, your body starts to understand when to make you feel sleepy at night time.
But if you keep changing those goal posts, it’s hard for your brain to do that, to still make you sleepy when you want to go to bed and to give you the right mood throughout the day, or to make you hungry and full at the right times.
You start to see that it affects many different areas of your life.
If you can wake up at the same time every day and really set a good morning routine to reinforce this -like getting light exposure, doing some exercise or enjoying your favourite breakfast, you’re going to have a really good positive day. You’re also going to have a really good quality sleep because of that.
Obviously, there are times when you might not be able to do it. But as long as you’re doing it 90% of the time you will start to notice that your body and your brain will start working like the well-oiled machine that it is.

I go to sleep at 10 yet awaken at 2 to 2:30 every morning. Then I just lay there until I get up at 5. I'm exhausted all the time.

Same here, I've been sleeping for 4 hours every single night for the past 2 years now. I've tried everything to cure it, from sleeping doctors to prescriptions, and nothing has worked. I've become accustomed to it, but man, do I miss a well-rested sleep.

I have no natural sleep, Insomniac for 23 years. I don’t worry or have any underlying issues. Nothing but prescribed medications for me and those are starting to fail.

What is your next best advice after already waking consistently every day for years and there's still no change to waking?

You think an insomniac controls what time they wake up? I go to sleep around midnight, and wake up anywhere from 2 am to 5 am every day. How is that supposed to work?

Wake up or get out of bed. People with sleep issues don’t always choose when they get to wake up because they usually are up.

Brie, I thought I HAD to go to the hospital a while back. I was losing all hope. I even went to a MD, willing to take ANYTHING!!! to sleep. I have had results from sleeping in a different room where I hear no noise from my sleeping husband. Turn off all social media except for spiritual prayers, sermons, rosary, chants.. attending Mass (Catholics). I was recently anointed by a priest for healing...asking God for a miracle...saying prayers of deliverance reducing dramatically contemporary music. There is a detox spray for heavy metal I began and then sent to a sick relative. Waiting for my next supply to come to continue. I will remember you in prayers.@@briechilli4496
