The worst of it is realising that the only way out of sleep paralysis, is to go into a deeper state of sleep. To accept that although you're desperate to move & sit up, you have to relax back into deeper sleep, is terrifying! There are times when I feel like I'm suffocating!

It happens to me often. So much so that I gained the ability to force myself out of it. One method is trying to focus on a single point and trying to move that, second is something mental. Like one time I was aware it was happening and just went back happily knowing that nothing will happen so the fear just disappeared and I woke up instantly. Another time was when I thought a burglar was in the house while I was in sleep paralysis cuz I saw my door knob moving (locked) and I tried to get serious and shout/roar myself out of it

I had Sleep paralysis last night (for the first time in my life) I have heard about it, and didn't know what is it called. I was literally having a vivid dream ( Visiting a hospital where my close friend was sick, suddenly for some reason everybody started Ignoring me, I felt uncomfortable. ) I wanted to end it/Wakeup. At that Movement I felt The Transition of Sleeping state. I was Aware of me lying in bed, But I couldn't move. And a Big Tall Black Shadow on right side of my bed 😭 He asked me in a Terrifying tone "What do you want me to do?" I was trying to move, but My body was paralyzed. 😭😭💀 I was literally thinking what Should I ask him to do, as if its a ginnie. That I 'thought' 🤔 wait this can't BE REAL!! THIS CAN'T HAPPEN!! 😂 (I have a Great sense of humour in very serious-scary situations ) I was internally laughingly-terrified What am I imagining ?? 😂😂😂😭😭 I can't move!! I 'thought' the prayer for scary situation in my 'mind' . Then I started to move my lips, and Called my sister's name, -1st try;I couldn't -2nd time I did it. I woke up !! 💀 It all lasted for about a solid 7-8sec initially terrifying. But me being well aware of the Fact it happens to Humans, its hallucination. Helped me Get out of it. • The Paralysis felt horrific. • Imagination, bcz I strongly believed this can't happen scientifically, wasn't that scary.

This used to happen to me regularly starting in my mid 20s and lasting until around age 40. It stopped then and haven't had it again since, I'm currently 59. For me it happened right when I was trying to fall asleep. I never had hallucinations but could totally see how if it happened to someone during the middle of the night how someone could think it was an incubus or aliens. At first the sense of not being able to move and not being able to feel yourself breathing was scary. I could feel it coming on as I started to drowse off, it was a 'sound feeling', not a noise but the feeling of a sound closing in is how I'd describe it. After a few times I started to relax and tell myself its ok and it became interesting, not enjoyable but analytically interesting. Trying to just move a toe because from the first time I had the sense that if I could just move a toe I'd pop out of it. I figured out what it was after a couple years looking into why people believed the absurd notion of being abducted by aliens. That's where I heard about it and did some research and thought 'Oh that explains it'. The rim sleep explanation would explain the hallucinations but I never woke up in the middle of the night with it. Literally the 100+ times this happened to me over 15 or so years it was always falling off to sleep. I'd read it was caused by the switch that kept you from moving and harming yourself while asleep turned on or didn't turn off at the right time. Basically your mind is awake but your body is still asleep.

My mother had ptsd stress anxiety and panic disorder and she is attacked by the sleep paralysis demons regularly. She calls them freezies. But a few years ago we got a dog and found out that our dog can get her out of this “freezy” by licking her face. If someone else forces her muscles to move for her she breaks out of it. The dog licking her moves her face muscles. This dog is a certified therapy and ptsd dog now. Another way to prevent this is taking an unsafe amount of Valium, would not recommend.

The last time it happened, I had passed out on the couch beside my wife one evening. She knows I get these episodes, so the moment I started breathing funny and murmuring, she woke me the hell up. Felt like I had been screaming at her to help me for an hour. She said it hadn't been more than one minute. In my "dream" I was caught in an infinite loop of "waking up" to her on the couch, then as I would try to get up to go do something, I couldn't move and then suddenly couldn't breathe, etc. standard sleep paralysis. Then she'd "wake me up" in the dream and it would start all over. Once she even grasped my face and told me she had me, trust her, I was fine, it was all over... and then it repeated. So when she finally woke me up in real life, well, let's just say I didn't believe her to begin with.
@hakima9197
@hakima9197 2 жыл бұрын
@@laner.845 That's really concerning and sad I'd say. I am really curious about how your wife feels in that very moment. Personally, in majority of the time I get those episodes at night, so I don't really have someone to witness and "wake me up". However, when it's early in the morning and someone of my family tries to wake me up I always need a minute, (which indeed feels like an eternity), to be fully conscious. Evenough I hear and see them during that "long minute" while having sleeping paralysis. You know what ? Once I even considered filming me during my sleep. But nah, too troublesome... Anyway I really hope that with the help of science, a way to relive this phenomenon will be found.

I remember reading about this one lady who had sleep paralysis and full blown audio and visual hallucinations because the part of her brain that comes up with dream material didn't entirely switch off properly when she woke up with paralysis. So until the sleep paralysis wore off she would experience hallucinations as her brain tried to translate dreaming in an awake mind. Apparently this was the compromise it came up with. Which is probably one of the creepiest ways the human body can malfunction.

That happens to me all the time, sometimes I hear like incoherent whispering, or feel breath on me or someone grab my leg. I always make sure to never open my eyes cause I'm scared of getting visual hallucinations too. Coolest hallucination I've gotten is probably feeling like I was on a coaster lol, I could hear the screaming and tracks and had the sensation on going up and down. You are the first professional I've heard say not to sleep on your back. I have sleep paralysis when I am sick. It's been happening since I was a little kid. I don't think it's due to any kind of medication, because I've had it happen with and without meds. I think being sick just disrupts my sleep cycle. I have had it in a few other situations but it's not a regular occurrence. I usually don't even dream. But occasionally I have really lucid weird dreams and I can feel actual body sensations. It's why I had to stop sleeping naked, because I kept having vivid lucid dreams and if I was sleeping naked I was naked in the dream.

It's not Satan, or Mohammad Ali back from the dead with a choke hold on you while you sleep. There are several causes, tho. Bad sleeping cycles, where there's a moment you're awake, but it interlaps with REM sleep. I like to think of it as both the part of the brain that keeps you asleep, and the one that's not, are awake, so you're dreaming while awake, and there may be hallucinations, or not, but it's more like a nightmare. The causes range from sleep issues, to disorders which cause sleep issues, like narcolepsy (a disorder which makes it difficult to control sleep times, which may affect the mood of someone), or something like PTSD, or several of these.

I've experienced this three times in my life and have had hallucinations twice out of the three. First one was a black figure that crept into my room through my door that was left half open, I saw this because I was laying on my stomach facing the door with the light from the room over slightly illuminating my room during the experience. It silently approached the side of my bed and nealt down where it began to observe me. At first I thought it was my dad so I started hyperventilating to signal something was wrong because my breathing was the only thing I had control over but it just knelt there, continuing to watch me. Acouple seconds passed and it became very clear to me that it was not my father, everything went dead silent. It faded as I regained control over my body.

i've had sleep paralysis hundreds of times honestly. Here's my experience and tips for anyone else: I always know it will happen when i wake up in the middle of the night and instead of sleeping i decide to open my phone and laptop. This is a sure way of causing your own sleep paralysis so don't do it. Next if i know it will happen, i always sleep on my side in the fetal position. This helps a TON. If you experience it, DO NOT struggle, it will make you panic even more, always focus on wiggling your toes first and if it really doesn't work just stay still until you fall back asleep. Just keep convincing yourself it's not real and soon enough it wont be scary anymore.

I love how the advice for shift work is "sleep regularly", it's true, nobody should work shifts, it's extremely unhealthy T__T If we could get just one law implemented everywhere it should be to ban 2+ shift work unless it's absolutely necessary. It would let most people sleep well and for those few professions that need night work it would be much better if there was a night ONLY shift, meaning that person works only nights always but can work less and get paid more for it, so ideally you could work like that when you're young for just a few years and save up a lot, then leave the position for the young people...

sleeping on my back really triggers my sleep paralysis. since then i never slept on my back for years. but i still get it a few times a year, but doesnt cause me anymore anxiety or panic. I just focus about being able to breath and wait until i wake up. I also get this tingling sensation on my lower back which tells me its going to happen and i try to move around to stop it.
