I've been in the metal community for over 30 years and on the Internet about as long... and if there is one thing I can count on is that if the "metal community" says a metal band either isn't metal or isn't good, or both, then that metal band is going to BLOW UP and become a leader in the genre.

I went to highschool in Victoria BC with Courtney from Spiritbox. She used to play in a band called Unicron with her brother Jackson before she got discovered by Iwrestledabearonce. My first band played our first show with Unicron for their first show. Mike used to play in a band called Fall In Archaea way way long ago. I used to work at the hospital with his mom. Both of them are incredibly talented, but I have to say I'm more than a little surprised by the level of success they've had. Aside from Nelly Furtado and Steve Nash, Victoria is not really all that well known for turning out huge success stories. Courtney was always very polite and kind, I really liked her a lot. Our bands did a lot of shows together back in the day. Mike I didn't know that well but he played in a fairly generic chug chug breakdown mathcore band. Crazy guitar player, just not that original. When people say 'gimmick bands' they don't mean bands that happen to use a gimmick, like say Iron Maiden and Eddie, but rather bands that don't really have anything to offer besides their gimmick. Basically if you take the gimmick away is there enough substance left and is it any good? Take Eddie away and Iron Maiden is still Iron Maiden. Take Slipknot's personas away and they still have their music, which is of varying quality but there's definitely enough substance in there. Gonna add some of my spice into the mix cuz why not? 1: Kurt Cobains Influence is more negative than positive, he single handedely ruined everything rock and metal had built up ever since the 70s. His " I don't wanna be a star" mentality compromised a whole generation of younger bands turning them into a lot "fake depressed look at me bands we're just normal guys" that at the end the day has 0 personality, has nothing to say and stands for absolutely nothing. You're not nirvana, it worked because that whole thing was their deal and became that selling point. Don't ever look up to these people, look at how messed up they ended. 2: TikTok did wonders for metal as whole. It added a humane aspect that severely lacked ever since 2010 when metal became more about musicians instead of the experience and the lifestyle . That's why bands like bands sleep token, bad omens are getting some attention, they are humane, they give you an experience and can connect with listeners at a emotional level.

I can't help but find Finn's obsession with making rock music "popular" and "accessible" again a bit odd. Punk, emo and metal fans have niche interests like WWE, motorsports, gaming, geeky stuff and anything people think is weird like snooker. It's about having a "personal touch", hence why cult bands like Brand New, Death, Iron Maiden and Deftones exist. There's very few bands like Metallica, Slipknot and Oasis who truly make it mainstream and become household names. Having a million genres is the result of having that "personal touch", compared to pop and rap, which has less variation. Pop and rap music is very much a business. If a certain art fails just once, the normies move on and said artist will have to move on to another genre like techno, rock or whatever or find a new job.

Never really understood the Spiritbox hype tbh. I mean, i do (they're a "heavy" band w/ a female vocalist), but aside from a song or two, I just don't think they do anything special or inspiring. People seem to jizz their pants every time they release something tho. Courtney is a legit beast of a screamer, but her cleans are forgettable (never changes her breathy tone & everything is in a low register), and i don't think they would have the compositions to set them apart if they had a dude frontman. I think Sleep Token have officially become overrated in a similar vain as Bad Omens, but they actually do do something different. I still think their 1st album is their best work tho. Vessel really sets them apart, and they cover a lot of stylistic ground, but a lot of their guitar-work has been lackluster the past 2 albums imo.

@XvXMONSTERXvX Жыл бұрын
This! that's why I'm so surprised ghost is as successful as they are right now. They arent doing anything new but everything theyre doing and getting praised for bands like black veil brides, king diamond, iron maien, etc always got panned for or called lame 'dad metal' or like you said gay now its cool? thats very weird to me that opinion changed so quick or is selective like that. however im happy for ghost and black veil brides. the scene needs more successful acts doing arena tours

I never liked Black Veil Brides besides the lead singer having such good looks like he does still till this day, their music was always trash... Just a pretty boy for the fangirls and others.... I think.

Koe Wetzel, when I was doing my counseling internship at an inpatient rehab center, there was a patient on the male's side who I would talk music with pretty often, and he told me to check out Wetzel (and some other cool country rock artists that I just can't remember the names of right now), I got the band/artist names written on the back of my binder somewhere in my office-oh, Riley Coyote is one of em. I actually have a couple two three of RC's songs on my Viddy Well playlist. Those bands were all good bands imo. They kinda border on crust and gutter punk (some of em, like RC does), because the crust and gutter punk scene is all about marrying punk and rock themes like heartbreak, resentment, drug and alcohol abuse, depression, being broke, unemployed, and traveling. The gutter and crust punks play their folk punk with country and western instruments and influence (like C&W musical influence, melodies, chord progressions, song structure, etc), and some of these Texas-or at least, Southern-based "country rock" artists-or whatever you'd classify them ass; I think of these country-esque bands as more like... Idk, "neo-outlaw" (?) Idk if that's even a sub genre already or not, but they remind me of Hank III (grandson and son of HWS and HWJr respectively), which I see as the pioneer, or at least the best example of "neo-outlaw". Anyway, the gutter/crust/folk punk scene is almost the same type of musical direction as these new country rock (neo-outlaw) artists. The two subgenres are a ven diagram with a lot of overlap. And honestly, I don't really like crust/guttr/folk punk, like the Railyard Ghosts, or whatever they're called, like that whole corner of anarcho-punk, I can't stand it. I much more enjoy the more country side of this newish country rock movement. The songs (and definitely the vocals) are just a hundred times better 😂

i think the thrash metal gimmick has always been something medieval and nordic. The long hair and beards are definitely a homage to something medieval or orthodox.

Metal's early history is so confusing but yeah especially those second wave groups. If you changed their image they'd just be hard rock of the era.

SpiritBox seem to want to try something new alot and some fans dont vibe with that. Me personally- I feel like DeathCore-focused SpiritBox is PEAK Spiritbox. like with their 'Cellar Door' and 'Belcarra' tracks which are EPICC. I also think the more metalcore stuff like "Circle With Me' and "Rule Of Nines' are fantastic. Thats what I get from them. Kinda like they are trying to make something for everyone

The problem they face is that when you have a woman-fronted band, lots of creepy fans are always looking to be betrayed when you "sell out" or "go pop".

Music taste is subjective. It is totally fine to not like something, its another to bash it endlessly and tell people that they shouldn't either or tell people their music tastes suck. Like what you like, just stop telling others what they should and should not listen to.

So much to unpack here. First, people take Finn way more seriously than he takes himself. Lots of unfunny people don’t get the tone of his videos at all. But also, what the hell even is Spiritbox’s “gimmick”? That they have a female screamer? Where is this gimmick that this person speaks of? I’d also say in general an issue in society around anything pop culture is people not being able to differentiate when they don’t like something and when it actually is not good. 99.8% of the time, anything someone thinks is bad is really just not for them, but they have no way of differentiating between the two

The reason why I hate people that miss genre bands is that it’s cringe. Do you really want to hear someone say “yeah I’ve been listening to that Punk band Metallica”, or “yeah I listen to Rock, I like Twenty One Pilots, Imagine Dragons, The 1975, and Portugal, The Man”. It’s fucking cringe hearing that.

Sleep Token are my favourite band and Spiritbox are another band that I love so yes for me they’re both good but I get that they’re not going to be everyone’s cup of tea. In the end we all like what we like, if we all liked the same thing we’d have nothing to talk about and the world would be a boring place.

I would say the biggest thing about my music I write which is hardcore and metal is it’s just me. After years of being in an out of bands I decided I would do it myself. Not because I couldn’t work with anyone I clicked with a bunch of people through out my years of playing on stage. And played shotloads of shows. I also do it on board meaning I don’t use a computer other than to transfer my files. So it has to be dead on time and nailed. I used a drum machine lol but it sounds more real than fake other than the standard decay of the drums.

I think it was Finn who spoke on the whole image gimmick thing before and how its not that exciting to just see some guys on stage with cargo shorts and t shirts. And its true adding an image makes it so much more entertaining for performance wise

There’s nothing wrong with liking Spiritbox or Sleep Token or any band that sounds like them. Just don’t call them metal (they aren’t) and don’t get pissy when metalheads, or people who actually like metal, don’t like a non-metal band.

I remember some guy back in the day saying that Drowning Pool and Disturbed were death metal. And once, I excused myself from a conversation before it became an argument when another "some dude" was saying Megadeth and Iron Maiden were way heavier than Slipknot. At the time, Slipknot had just released their self titled album.

There are many metal bands i would not put on my playlist, but would love to go see live, likeSpiritbox and Sleep Token would be bands fitting that catagory for me, im picky when it comes to my playlists, and what i listen to, or i listen to entire cataloges from certain bands. but i can see myself go to a live concert with a lot more bands then i got in my headphones usaly.

I don't see it as a gimmick, I think, like Alice Cooper and GAWR have stated, it's more of incorporating theatrics. And I think that when a band can pull off combining both theatrics and music, then they're deserving of being on another level.
