To be fair to Jim Carey, back in 1991 when that interview happened the term Death Metal was new. Thrash was already established since 1983. Easy to make that mistake back then. Hi Finn, Indonesian here... To my knowledge as a metal head, Jokowi once gave a speech at one of the metal festivals in my country "Rock in Solo 2011" when he was still serving as mayor of Solo. FYI: In that time the headliners of the festival were Death Angel and Kataklsym. Now moving forward to 2013, when Jokowi was serving as governor of Jakarta, he once got a bass guitar from Rob Trujillo. In 2014 during his campaign as Indonesia's presidential candidate, he was interviewed some journalist And he said that he became a fan of Metallica by the time he was in high school. Ok, now the "sus" moment. Based on school data, Jokowi attended high school in 1977-1980. How the hell could he be a fan of a band that at that time was not yet formed even thrash metal as a genre does not yet exist. FYI : Thrash metal entered Indonesia around the late 1980s.

I love how, on the one hand, we're having a go at gatekeepers and, on the other hand, defining what counts as being "in" any given genre and what is just "entry level." It occurs to me that, as a famous person, there's no point in admitting to liking relatively niche bands, as no one will know what that means, whereas mentioning a more well-known band (as opposed to actually mainstream) that is in a given genre (or recognisably adjacent) will get some cut-through (and maybe encourage some people to listen to the bands that might not otherwise).

I saw them live (in germany) when their album "Vile" just came out (in 1996 which I guess might even have been my first live concert) and they were the headliners and played with Impaled Nazarene (the band I was most interested to see live), Asphyx, Grave, Immolation and Rotting Christ . Since many of their songs were indeed banned and couldn't even played live they chose to just perform kinda incognito using that current album title as band name and just played all their songs (even the banned ones) just without announcing the titles, since the authorities couldn't distinguish one song from another anyway.

I can't believe you skipped the rest of that Jim Carrey interview where he literally predicts the entire 2000s metal core sound as a joke. As far as I'm aware, that interview was the first time anyone ever considered mixing screamed vocals with clean singing.

@@Dimebag_Darrell420 this would be way easier to explain if I didn't immediately forget a band exists the moment I realize this is what they sound like, but I'm talking about the bands that sound like they definitely listen to lamb of God during the verse and then a less masculine blink 182 during the chorus. Phil just varies his intensity. Jim carrey's joke was how silly the contrast between screaming and bubblegum pop is.

Yes, Nicolas Cage has been in alot of bad movies, but he's also been in alot of fantastic movies, a couple are some of my all time favorites. If you haven't seen Mandy you should, it's basically a progressive metal music video, revenge story. He's also a great actor, he just makes alotbof odd acting decisions 😂
