I read someone’s interpretation where the entire discography reflects the struggle to be alive. The struggle to be alone, particularly when you might be co-dependent on a person or thing. The struggle to have faith (in humanity, a god, yourself, etc) when you have the ability to see a bigger picture of the world that weighs on your heart. Anyway I think that’s a beautiful interpretation. I thought this song in particular is about how we’ve gone too far as a society, gone beyond our means and we value things we shouldn’t (I’ll take a pound of your flesh before you take a piece of my paystub=valuing money over human life) Thanks for the video guys!

Winged insect + Funeral Pyre is my favourite way of saying "I'm a moth to a flame."
@asherkaye489111 ай бұрын
😱😱😱so that’s what that meant
@JesusFriedChrist11 ай бұрын
The careful wording means more too. A winged insect is vague. Can’t even name the name of the insect, it’s too insignificant. A funeral pyre is of great significance. It’s an event to mark the passing of a life into the realm of the dead. Meaning within meaning within meaning. Vessel is a master lyricist. Every song becomes more and more of a masterpiece the more it’s examined. The true mark of an expert craftsman.

So happy to know that you're going to see Sleep Token! :3 (I already saw them in Wembley last year) I hope you can post a little vlog from the concert! Cheers! About the meaning of the song. I think that Eden is the place where Vessel (the singer) started his journey. In a state of blissful ignorance. Far away from Sleep. Not necessarily happy, but at least safe and serene. You can see this played out through the whole discography, the relation between Vessel and Sleep is intense, twisted, at times violent, but Vessel seems to come back for more every time. Sometimes he is the tempter sometimes she is the temptress. Sometimes she hides her own pain from him, sometimes he hides his internal turmoil from her. I think Take Me Back To Eden is the final request from Vessel to Sleep to finally let him go, (after Euclid is a declaration of "Everything is forgiven and we can now move on - but I will remember you and the "ancient canopies we laid beneath""). At least that's my interpretation of it.
@Greatmeasures11 ай бұрын

My interpretation of this specific song is of nostalgia for the “innocence” of childhood. The unnatural responsibilities placed on adults in society are pulling us away from ourselves and our nature. The closest we got to our natural/animalistic selves was in childhood. The breakdown and harsh vocal in the end: “I will travel far beyond the path of reason”, expressing the extreme unwillingness to accept the responsibilities of adulthood, and then demanding: “take me back to Eden, take me back to Eden!”. I love the entire album and Euclid is my favorite song of all time. I love watching you guys react to Sleep Token songs. I wish they were touring the West Coast! I hope y’all have a blast at their St. Louis show.

I agree with the song being about a relationship... to me, the eden represents the initial state of a relationship, that phase where everything is perfect, that you are excited to know the other person, there are no problems yet, etc... so now that he´s facing a difficult relationship, problems, abuse, he wants to be taken back to eden, to the moment, to the initial phase, to the eden phase, where everything is perfect, is new, etc.. The chokehold song also represents these difficult moments he´s living up in the relationship

Right. Eden is a metaphor for a blissful, happy time. But also remember that in the Garden and Eden it was only one man and one woman (minus the snake of course). It can also be interpreted as back to the time when it was just me and her together alone.

for me the song is quite literal in it's interpretation. it's the time right after a breakup. the first verse is how you feel during the relationship but you realize that it has to end. chorus is how you feel towards that person (you still care but you know it has to end so you put on a brave-face and go through with it). second verse is how you feel the days after. maybe you binged drinked to dull the feelings and you isolate yourself. you mourn but you remember that the time with that person wasn't all that good. the third verse is vessel accepting that what happened had to happen. it takes two to make a relationship work. still feelings of anger towards the person surface from time to time. and during this whole time he still misses the good times and wishes to relieve them. it hits hard.

Theres a lot of mix metaphor in the songs on the album that insinuates something is wrong. It all copitulates with the last song but essentially my theory on the album is him coming to terms with a past relationship. He personifies that relationship as a god. This god is infallable and he worship them. But obviously with this song hes coming to terms with the fact of how bad it was and the fact that he wasnt actually in eden. What I love is that this is also reflected sonically as with the last break down he screaming take me back but realising hes in pain and that its not a good place to be. This is also reflected in the winged insect, funeral pyre. Essentially a moth is attracted to a flame but it will always be burned by it.

I suspect in this context, he's begging the deity 'Sleep' to take him back to Eden, which could be perceived as a time before he knew the deity 'Sleep'. A sort of ignorance is bliss sort of plea. So I think it's part of the whole 'Sleep' narrative. So it's a metaphor within a bigger metaphor. A metametaphor. Just my theory though.

Take me Back to Eden is my favorite track off the album. When you look at his lyrics, the pacing of the song, the inflection, when it gets intense, when it becomes reflective, introspective. The idea of explaining drowning in such an eloquent way....Then you look at its placement. What song is before this on the album, RAIN. What is the beginning of the song talking about, "dive through crystal waters, perfect oceans (atlantic)". think about how he describes drowning, "No one told me not to breathe, now the weightlessness recedes". So he starts drowning/sinking while in water, because he tried to breathe while under water. Idk gents, this is one of the greatest if not THE greatest title track I've ever heard. The final bridge where he talks about "no amount of self-sought fury will bring back the glory of innocence", so in his own life? in the garden of eden? where we were all innocent. Then the ending, the grand finale, after saying he's going to be a better man, he isn't. he's human. he erupts in anger and demands he be taken back to eden. and then, to finish it all off, what's the next song, Euclid. Which starts off with an apology in a sense, "hey i fucked up, give me 5 minutes to explain, I'm sorry". I know we have all been there. maybe im crazy, who knows :D lol wish you guys well and i hope i win that ticket :D

It's hard to take a clear meaning out of the lyrics of this song (and I have a feeling it's exactly what ST wanted in the first place), but I like the idea that "Eden" is the place of the spirit, where flesh, desires, and reason are absent. Some say that the self-awareness, or the "reason", (the biblical apple) is the root of all our suffering because it blinds us from the truth, as a veil before our eyes (the Veil of Maya). In this perspective, taking someone from the reason back to eden could have some deep meaning. But of course I could be completely wrong! :-) As always, it's a lot of fun watching you guys, thanks! Grandi metriche!

As someone who’s battled through addiction and remaining sober, the lyrics resonate with substance abuse issues. The first time you use, it’s blissful like Eden, and it’s often feels like a wonderful thing, then, slowly, it starts to erode everything in your life. Especially the lyric, ‘I’m a winged insect and your a funeral pyre’ is very much like the relationship addicts have with drugs/alcohol. The hip hop sections lyrics resonate with hitting rock bottom and experiencing detox/withdrawals’

'See me for what I have become' is definitely an expression of pride (the sin). Taking a 'pound of your flesh' over one's 'pay-stub', denotes both wrath and greed. I'm sure there's more intentional moments. Or maybe they're not intentional, idk.

The trilogy albums focused on the toxic relationship Vessel(most likely) faced. Eden, in my interpretation, is the desire to find someone new, or to pursue happiness again after a long period of depression(which is present in the second album This Place Will Become Your Tomb).

I think of Eden as either the period in the relationship before it became abusive or before Vessel had ever met Sleep or who Sleep represents. Near the conclusion of the song, when the music swells and just before the breakdown, he sings the first couple lines from the first song off of the album, Chokehold. I feel like this represents the cycle of abuse and how he is about to fall back into that cycle, but he screams out against it and demands to be taken back to Eden, back to a state which he felt whole.

I also interpreted most of the themes as about a relationship with a power imbalance or abuse , from my own personal experience's as a young'un as you said you want to leave but when you do you are drawn back because actually the abuse has made you dependent on the abuser , so while you might be free without someone controlling you, you feel lost.
@jasonchristy848711 ай бұрын
My interpretation of the song: There was a relationship that fell apart. Eden is the time before it fell apart and he wishes he could return. He notes that beating himself up over it (self absorbed fury) will not erase the harm that was done (bring back the innocents). In the absence of this relationship he realizes how important it was to him. While he is still drawn to this person like a winged insect to light, there is nothing there but a reminder of what was lost.
@ruiduarte5045 ай бұрын
I think the song, the person that wants to come back to eden its a mess of a person, a walking hell, like the lyrics say. A person that is on the edge, he wants to go back to Eden, free from nightmares, from hate, from all this bad feelings, like he is poisoned and wants to be cleanse. Going to the place where first man and women were, to reset his humanity or our humanity in general and start again.
@iancraig541511 ай бұрын
My personal interpretation of this song, having a general understanding of the concept behind their trilogy of albums, is that this is the abusive ex-partner at their absolute wits end trying desperately one last time to convince their ex to get back together one last time while also lamenting what they've lost as a result of their own actions. The chorus alludes to a patient violence and that they're "a waking hell and the gods grow tired" presumably referencing Gods off their first album, where it seems that the speaker drops all pretenses that they aren't a violent person but they still want to do what they can to make things work, but by the end of the song realizes that the only world in which their ex can be happy is without them, which is where the breakdown hits as the speaker drops the facade of civility and desperately tries to claw their own personal eden back, but is shut out for the final time, which leads into the final song of the album where they let go in the end. People who are more knowledgeable with ST's discog so far feel free to correct me in the replies, but I think this interpretation gives the song so much impact and meaning when you view it almost as a 5 stages of grief style process of being unable to cope with the end of a relationship that was caused by the speaker.
@therealjrad7 ай бұрын
I actually enjoy this take. For me it’s about letting go of what no longer serves you while also being tempted by the very thing that you’re trying to let go of which fits the theme of Sleep token very much with the deity sleep using Vessel as a… well a vessel to walk the earth. Arguably after being cast down because the “Gods grew tired” of her Eden, I believe in this context, is the serenity of a life without pain, the feeling of innocence. whether in youth, or metaphorically speaking “with the gods” It’s one last plea. I think an important motif to point out in the song is the contrast between clean and screaming “(I will (I have) travel(led) far beyond the path of reason take me back to eden)” with the heavy outro it is quite literally Vessel BITING BACK IN ANGER as mentioned in a previous lyric in the song. It’s pure poetry honestly.

In the sense of the lore that I know, the band has this god called Sleep and Vessel and the other members are spreading the message of Sleep. So from what I read on the lore, Sleep gave Vessel the powers of a god and that drove him insane, theres even time traveling to the past in some part. For me it talks about Sleep being this abusive bastard that loves to torture Vessel but Vessel wants the powers and everything that comes with being a god, he wants to go back and be a god and be Sleep´s Vessel. Take me back to Eden, take me back to being a god I hate being human/the hell that is Earth and our present world. Thats my interpretation from what I read from the lore. I always thought of it like an abusive relationship. Except now hes idealizing that time period where even though it was still rotten. Even that toxic time wasn’t all bad like now in his mind. So thats the idyllic ’Eden’ but it was blissful ignorance or just ignoring the bad. (Been there done that) Then that swings into Euclid where hes coming to terms and moving on and not looking back.
