It's amazing to me how different babies can be. My current 6.5 month old was a breeze to sleep train. She goes to sleep so easily with just a couple of minutes of a little whining. My first daughter though, I tried to sleep train her for months & she would just SCREAM and scream and scream. When I went in to give her a pat or sooth or whatever, she'd scream harder, like gasping for breath screaming. For several days, she'd scream for over an hour before falling asleep from exhaustion. I don't think that that is what it's supposed to look like. I gave up after a few nights like that. Tried again a few months later & the same thing. I do think that this kind of sleep training works for the vast majority of babies. It just didn't work for my 1st daughter until she was over a year old. It would make me so mad when other moms were like, oh sleep training is great, it wasn't that hard & they sleep so good now, you really should sleep train. It made me feel like a failure. But now that I see with my second daughter how it can be, I see what those other moms experienced & why they said it was so great. So other moms, if you're trying to sleep train & your experience looks nothing like this, it's not you, & it's ok! It stinks, but not all babies are the same with sleep training :-)

Just found your channel as I am preparing to start tonight sleep training my 5 month old! Your experience with your son is exactly as mine is... up ALL night long.. Every 2 hours at night and then it takes a good 30 to 45 mins to get him back to sleep. He is only eating once at night so his wake ups are only because he doesn’t know how to soothe himself back to sleep. Naps are the same.. rock for 30 mins until sleeping tip toe to the bed lay him down and majority of the time he would wake up and I would have to start over.. and all this to get a 30 min nap from him in his bed. If he fell asleep in the car for naps he could sleep for 2 or more hours. So I know he can sleep longer. Sooooo I am ready and going to do it tonight Lord help me 🙏 Thanks for sharing your experience I feel much better prepared hearing your step by step and how it went. Light at the end of the tunnel for this exhausted mama.

Sooooo WOW! Can’t believe I was so scared! Did the bedtime routine, kissed him good night and left the room. He made some noise and fussed a little bit for about 15 minutes and fell asleep.I never had to go back in. He woke up every hour or two as normal, however, he would let out a few noises, never out right crying and then within 5 minutes fell asleep. He still needed a night feed so when he woke at his normal 11pm I went in and fed him and layer him down still awake. He grabbed his lovie turned over and fell right right asleep. I won’t get too optimistic seeing how only the first night. He does seem much better rested this morning!

I always feel weird saying to content creators "I'm so glad you are back to posting regularly" after they have had babies/been on vacation or whatever because I don't want them to think I'm ungrateful or don't think it right for y'all to take a break (you don't owe your subscribers anything and they shouldn't feel entitled to content). That being said, with the purest intentions ever I do want to say it has been exciting seeing more content from you! You are one of my faves and I have been watching your videos ever since I had twins and your comment about it being okay to let one cry while you feed the other SAVED ME! We FINALLY got our 1 year old to sleep through the night! It is amazing! I feel human again. I was either nursing or rocking him to sleep for naps and bedtime and it just got to be too much. It got to a point where he was waking up almost every hour or two during the night. Now he doesn't wake up at all at night and is going to sleep mostly on his own with very little crying!

I don’t currently have a baby (my little girl is 2.5), but I LOVE your approach to sleep training. Your first video with the girls helped me so much when we sleep trained Bella, and I’m tagging this one as a refresher for any future babies. We’ve done a lot of good things as parents, but sleep training has been one of the best things we’ve done. Could not agree more that sleep affects the entire child - their mood, their ability to learn and play, and also my ability to parent well. One tip for others... if you’re able to have your partner be the one who goes in to soothe after the 5 minute mark, we found this to be helpful. Bella would completely freak out and it would be much worse if I went back in. But, Daddy was just enough comfort without her being indignant that she wasn’t getting more cuddles. Also, our child was VERY resistant and it took a long time for her to catch on (2+ weeks of lots of crying)... so stick with it. She’s an amazing sleeper now - still sleeping 12 hours at night with one nap a day. And now she’s literally running and jumping 3 minutes before getting in bed. But as soon as she gets her last hug, she’s out for the night.

We used the "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child" book to help with our first baby. It talks about how most babies and children are sleep deprived; very eye-opening. Our first we sleep-trained at 9 months, but we'll probably try 6 months with our 2nd (she's 3 months right now). It took about 3 days, for our first to go down without crying at all, but she's a great sleeper now. She's almost 2 1/2 and sleeps 11-12 hours at night and takes one afternoon nap for 1 1/2 to 3 hours. I'm a much better mom when I sleep so I'm very grateful for sleep-training, as I'm sure you are. 😁

Thanks for the video! I just wondered what one should do if the baby wont even lie down in the crib. As soon as I put her in the crib she instantly rolls over, stands up on her feet and starts jumping on the bed. Then I come back, put her down again and so on and so on... FYI my baby is 9.1/2 months old.

People act as though sleep training is a barbaric practice where you put your baby in a dark room and never seem them again for 12 hours. It is so much about using your instinct and following your babies' cues. Sleep is so so important for their development and overall well being. With my son (who is 4 now) we read a lot and then adapted parts of programs to fit his needs and what we felt comfortable with.

So I did something similar with my two older kids and it worked out fine. Trying it with my third for the first time right now and I've hit my first obstacle. When I go into the room after the five minutes, she will NOT calm down or be soothed. She cries just as much when I'm standing by her bed and patting her and talking to her. So basically when I re-leave the room she is just as livid as she was when I entered. I can't remember if the other kids did this, but I feel like they calmed down at least a little when I came into the room. Right now I feel like me going in there is doing nothing, and she is just crying nonstop. Any tips from anyone who has experienced the same thing? I'm still not supposed to pick her up right?
@katherinerhiannon27934 жыл бұрын
The Raven's Nest from researching my this topic a lot.... every single baby is different and sometimes sleep needs are the same as other babies but sometimes not so much... so for example, your first two babies clearly had personalities where they were going to sleep well and independently with not much problem. But with other babies, they just will *not* be developmentally ready to soothe themselves and sleep independently no matter how hard you try. You just gotta remind yourself that this baby is different and that babies are normally not developmentally ready to soothe themselves because from the ages 0-2 years old, this phase is all about “trust vs distrust” your caregivers. If you don’t help them when they need you at night, and you let them cry it out, they are slowly learning that they can’t trust you to be there for them in that time of need. Imagine if your loved ones ignored you when you pleaded for them to just *be there for you*... this is why babies cry at night. They need you to show them you will simply be there for them, and that they can trust you! As they get older and older, they will sleep for longer and longer stretches - this phase is all about patience as well for the parents who, remember, are the ones who decided to bring a completely dependent human into the world! They don’t just depend on us for food and diaper changes. They depend on us for ATTENTION aka playing with them often, being present with them, giving them affection, as well as for sleep needs! So just wanted to share what I have learned so far as a mother of breastfed twin girls...with you as food for thought.

Ugh I tried this for 30 minutes. He just bawls with his eyes closed. The second I pick him up he is quiet. I don’t know if any sleep training will ever work. He’s 6.5 months, breastfed and sleeps in bed with me. All he does in his crib is get overly worked up and stuck in the slats..

Ah this is soooo helpful thank you. I’m pregnant with my second and found sleep training quite stressful with my first. We didn’t really nail it until he was around 9 months and he would wake at night until much older. I think our mistake was we would let him self soothe at bedtime but then always rush in when he would wake during the night instead of waiting to see if he would soothe himself. This meant he woke up at night at least once til he was about 19 months! I know I’ll be returning to this video when my second is at the right age thank you!

My twins slept through the night from 8 weeks to 8 months (on their own, no sleep training). When they were 8 months, I was hospitalized for over a week and in that time, my mom got them used to being rocked to sleep and held while they nap 😑 ever since then, they became terrible sleepers and started waking up multiple times a night and wouldn't go back to sleep unless they were rocked. They're 13 months now and it's getting a little better but they're still dependent on getting rocked (they will literally stay up all night unless you do it). I need toddler sleep training 😂😫.

Haven’t had a chance to watch the video but definitely will soon, love your channel. I also follow new mommy Shawn Johnson and she recently posted something about how every mama, mamas differently. LOVE that. And it’s true. there is more than one way to be a good mom and it’s nice when we can be supportive of each other isn’t it. Our sleep solution was to start cosleeping with our son @ 4m old. Never intended to cosleep but when our son was 4m old he of course went thru sleep regression. My instinct was to put him in bed with hubby and I and he has been a great sleeper ever since, getting his much needed rest for proper development and we, his parents, also are well rested. Im so glad we made the decision to cosleep, it was right for our family. Our son will soon be 3 yrs and we are going to transition him into his own space soon, will be nice but also going to miss the xtra cuddles.

Hey! my little girl is almost 4 months old and when she was 6 weeks old and even before that we also had to hold her and rock her to sleep all the time and then she would also wake up the minute you put her in bed. So then i thought.. something is not adding up here and i went on the internet because i had a gut feeling we needed to do something different. That's when i found an info article from a hospital and they explained that you have to put your baby to bed awake so that they can self soothe and learn themselves to fall asleep. ever since we started doing this (by 6 weeks) she's slept through the night from 9.30 pm till 7.30 am :) Now we're starting to change her schedule a little bit because we've noticed she needs a little more sleep at night (because we need to wake her in the morning) but it's a work in progress ;) (sorry for the long story, wanted to share with you)

Thanks for sharing your sleep training tips. I really needed to hear these as we are sleep training our 5month old now. We have actually already started and she is doing so well, I laughed because I used to rock her to sleep too and it took me hours, I mean HOURS, and once we started training the same thing happened she would just fall asleep the minute I walk out of the door. Anyway the only problem we have is she is struggling to link her sleep cycles, but she doesn't cry at all, she just lays there talking to herself when I go in she would start to moan / cry but as soon as I step out she is back to "talking" sometimes she falls asleep again but only after like a good 15-30mins do you have any advice for this because I know how important sleep is. Our eldest was just like a good sleeper from the get go so this is all so new.

They are still breastfeeding and stirring multiple times a night to comfort nurse but they actually most of the time alternate between who wants to nurse so I do get a break and I do get good sleep between them - babies don’t wake up often for no reason, and most breastfed babies and non-breastfed babies are not developmentally ready to sleep on their own with zero help getting there nor are they developmentally ready to sleep for longer than about 5-6 hours at a time, even when they are toddlers. They need our reassurance to help them get good sleep - this phase from 0-2 years of age is all about “trust or don’t trust” the people who care for you. Think about it like this: when you *consistently* don’t go to your baby when they cry, you’re essentially telling them they shouldn’t trust you to care for them when they need you for ANYTHING - whether that’s food, diaper change, comfort, help getting back to sleep, etc. Imagine when you’re upset, even if that is in the middle of the night - if your loved one doesn’t want to be there for you... that hurts, right? It’s not how you would want to be treated. We don’t like being ignored and we shouldn’t have to be when we are babies and our parents are the ones who decided to make a COMPLETELY dependent human being. You should research this topic as much as you can to get all the perspectives and angles. Many psychologists and anthropologists have found that in many other cultures, they do not let their babies cry for too long before going to their aid, ever.

I also want to add to my comment that even though most babies are not developmentally ready to sleep longer than 5-6 hours at a time - usually at night, after the newborn phase, babies will sleep a total of 10-12 hours at night, but will often need help getting back to sleep upon waking from certain sleep cycles, but usually not all sleep cycles.

I’m so glad you posted this! My almost 5 month old has been STRUGGLING to nap! Ever since he got sick like almost a month ago 😩 he was sleeping 2 hour stretches and now it’s like 30 minutes! At night he wakes up like every 2-3 hours sometimes every hour and it’s sooo exhausting. Definitely trying this because he’s like 18/19 lbs lol. But question. After they are used to this and doing it for naps how do you handle it when you guys go out? Does he nap while your out and about or do you come back home so he naps? Hoping sleep training helps my little guy!

Thank you so much For being open about this. I’m so for sleep training and I have done it with both my kids. My girls are incredible sleepers as well.

How long does Owen nap during the day? My son is 4 months old and sleeps through the night but will only nap for about 30min every 1.5hrs during the day. Sometimes he’s super cranky but I can’t get him back to sleep. Part of me thinks he should be napping longer, the other part of me wants to leave it alone because he does sleep so well at night.
@kendraatkins4 жыл бұрын
Clarice Bishop three-four naps a day. I put him down every two hours. Your baby may be over tired during the day.

So if he naps from 8-9, I wait and put him down around 11:00

How did you keep your girls from waking each other up if they woke up and started crying? I have 8 month twins and I have tried sleep training them but sometimes one will start crying and I’ll wait to see what happens but In that time usually the other one gets woken up. Any tips?
@kendraatkins4 жыл бұрын
Kaitlyn Jones usually it wasn’t a problem. In a book on twins I read it talks about how twins get so used to each other that they don’t wake each other up much!
@kaitlynjones50944 жыл бұрын
Kendra Atkins I don’t think that’s the case with my own. My girls cry is so high pitched that it usually startles her brother and his cry is so loud that almost every time he cries she wakes up. It’s easy when they both start out and are crying together but if one wakes up and cries and I don’t get them right away the other one will too. I’m not really sure how to manage it.
@katherinerhiannon27934 жыл бұрын
My girls are like your twins! Their screams are very high-pitched, and what’s interesting is during the newborn phase, they didn’t wake each other every time they cried. But as they got more aware and older and were not newborns anymore, they ALWAYS wake each other. But you don’t have to sleep train them. My twin girls are almost 15 months old, I exclusively breastfed them for about 7 months, and my husband + I have been bed-sharing with them since they were around 2 months old. Hi Kendra! Do you follow wake times? Do you expect owen to sleep 12 hr/day? I notice he doesn’t have a set wake up time in the morning.
@kendraatkins4 жыл бұрын
He is usually up around 6:30. And then for wake times I keep him up for 2 hours.

What if your baby can go to sleep by themselves but wakes up in between the cycles and has a harder time falling alseep? Should they be picked up and not put them to sleep, or just repeat the process until they go back to sleep?

Hey Kendra! Thanks for posting this. We still have our twin girls swaddled 😖 they are five months and not rolling over consistently yet so we haven’t really been aggressive on getting them out. They also take a pacifier. So we were thinking of cutting both out cold turkey and doing the training. What are your thoughts? They sleep great and I don’t nurse them anymore during the night but we have been having frequent wake ups in the middle of the night 😐

What if you baby sleeps in be with you ? He’s 5momths old almost 6 and he’s been sleeping with me in bed ever since he was born. Should I try and transition him to his crib or do you think sleep training will work in my bed?
@kendraatkins4 жыл бұрын
Isis Pierce they recommend in their own bed. Owen was ending up in our bed a lot too because it was so much easier. I think he was starting to get used to our bed!

Thanks for the video! I have a daughter who is almost 5 months old. How do you determine his nap times/bed time? Are they roughly the same each day or do you mostly just pay attention to wake windows/Owen’s signals?
@kendraatkins4 жыл бұрын
Kayla Dow I keep him up 2 hrs at a time. So it varies day by day. Usually he naps 2 hours after he’s up so around 8:00, then whenever he wakes I wait two more hours for next nap and so on.

I’m a big advocate for baby sleep as well. Obviously bc I love sleep, but also because it’s so good for them. I know so many people who have inconsistent sleep routines/schedules and bedtimes. They say they’re not “spoiling” or creating a “crutch” but that’s not the point. They need dark rooms, white noise, etc. to get food quality sleep. My older child is 2 now so there’s a little wiggle room and every now & then we stay up past bedtime. Fortunately both my girls have been good sleepers.. my second is way better than my first even. She sleeps 12 hours, 10 without nursing bc I do dreamfeed her before I go to sleep. My first daughter was exactly the same and my supply was always amazing and we nurses for a year. Thankfully my second daughter has never needed to be rocked which I’m glad bc of the Wild toddler running around. We still do use a paci though and I do have to put it back in at times so I need to deal with that now.

Kristen AR 100% agree!! Our girls have to go to sleep before 7:30, usually 7 and it’s always a much better night.

Good for you to offer what worked for you to others. People need to understand that proper sleep is pertinent to bodily rest, mental attitude, ability to solidify memories even for things you must learn, etc. It is important that children learn to self-soothe, what nighttime is, even nap time and quiet time during the day, and that their growth and development is not truncated by poor sleep habits which can cause personality disorders, too, and learning problems. Go for it. Share what you discovered. I've seen people allow their children to get overstimulated and overtired and think it's ho-hum, oh well, isn't it funny. No, it's harmful unless you've had no choice under the circumstances. They get to the point where they cannot sleep properly and have no recourse in their mental toolbox but to cry and thrash about. It is cruel. You were really thorough in what you covered. And people can adapt the binkie thing if they must. I think some moms need the baby to need them, so don't just allow them to sleep and go through their self-soothing and let them adapt to the REM cycles and get needed sleep.
