:)) Fortunately, this song is not related to a suicide. It is instead dedicated to the total solar eclipse that was visible in Europe in the summer of 1999 (after 222 days from the beginning of the year, as one of the lyrics says). As far as I know, Tuomas received the request to compose this song for the eclipse from the German government, through his recording company, so he received the request with great aversion, unhappy that he was being told what to compose. The result, however, exceeded everyone's expectations, being a great success with the public. It is also one of Floor's favorite songs, as I heard Tuomas declare in an interview.

Yep, 1999... plus, the days in Finland can get "full dark" or "full bright" at some parts of year, that should be the source of "222 days of light"... BTW it is one of few songs "requested" by the recording company (at this opportunity of 1999 eclipse) so Tuomas delivered...

Ok ....please allow me to complete the infos on that song....... first: one of the rare songs that was performed by all three vocalists. second: one of the rare songs that does not base on an idea of Tuomas. in 1999 Tuomas was asked by his label (Drakkar Records) to write a song about the total eclipse of the sun in 1999. They asked him: Please not longer than 3mins (radio-friendly). Tuomas did it in nearly 4:30mins. third : Total eclipse of the sun occured in 1999 over northern Europe with its peak of 2:23sec in Romania.......once in a lifetime.... That was at the 11th aug 1999 (223rd day of the year).....222 days of light will be desired by a night....... Fun fact: there had been 3 Concorde aircraft in the air who followed the shadow and enlarged the time for the passengers to nearly 15mins. For me personally: I will never forget that magic moment.....seemed the earth stands still...total silence......even the birds were quiet.....magical. Its a magical song with a great solo of Emppu...showing his masterclass ..... Bringing variations of the theme and adding his own notes in full harmony with the theme.....expressing great emotions with quite few notes........simply but perfectly performed....... And don`t ask me about the GODDESS performing it...........

Goddess Floor doesn’t have to do a whole lot to bring me to tears, but this song does it every time. Especially the Tampere performance. But as much as I worship The Goddess Floor, Goddess Tarja does an amazing performance of this song on the End Of An Era. Check that one out also.

The best version IMO. And not bad for a song he didn't want to write (he didn't want to write on commission). Floor said about this: "Sleeping Sun" was one of the highlights for me. It hadn't been in the set for six years, but I asked that we would do it. It's a very special song for me, so I had to be careful that my emotions didn't get the best of me. Otherwise it becomes too challenging to sing it". She also said: "[Emppu] is an amazing guitar player, but he doesn’t need to fill every gap in the song with meaningless notes. He really keeps the atmosphere [of the songs]. What he plays in Sleeping Sun is beautiful."

One of the early Songs, it is about the solar eclipse "two hundred and twenty two days of light will be desired by the night". Because that's the amount of time that went by before the eclipse (11th of August was the 223rd day of the year 1999). At that time their german record Label asked to write a song about it. One of the terms was "not longer than 3 minutes", Knowing Tuomas, he made it 4+ But it's also true that everyone has a different view of this song. Usually something they have experienced themselves.

I adore this song - but now every time I hear it, I think of the time Floor broke down trying to finish the last chorus. It was right after her cancer surgery. Tears well up in my eyes every time. Hey, when The Goddess cries, everybody cries.

Great reaction! Song commissioned by Nightwish's then German record label to commemorate a total solar eclipse in 1999 . They required the song to be no more then 3 minutes to be radio friendly and Tuomas, being himself, wrote a 4 minute song. While the lyrics are directly related to the solar eclipse, the music gives it a feel of longing and filled with emotion. I can totally see the eclipse in the song as a metaphor for loss and pain. One of Floor's favorites to sing from the Tarja era. She wanted to add it to the setlist for this tour and the deal with Tuomas was that she agreed to add Stargazers, another Tarja era song that they hadn't performed in years since it wasn't something Anette could sing. This is one of the songs where I love Floor's and Tarja's performances equally. Checkout either the 2005 music video for the re-recorded version of the song (Tarja striding across a medieval battlefield like a valkyrie, they guys fighting as knights) or the live performance from the End of an Era concert. Also there is a fan video of Floor singing this song in her first show after recovering from her breast cancer surgery in 2022. She gets very emotional and her voice cracks at the end. Oh yes, the first show was just around 3 weeks after her surgery, in Belgium. I was there and it was a very emotional moment for everyone. But just a few minutes after this song she came back on stage smiling and full of energy. A few weeks later in Amsterdam she sang this without problems.

Hello dear reactor. I found Nightwish thousand moons ago lol What I have found listening to Nightwish songs is soothing and heart healing. I have had bad times in my life and I tell you this music had healed my heart. I saw an interview of Tuomas and Jukka, someone..a fan, asked Tuomas long time ago, very early time of Nightwish, why don't you write a song that heals heart? He did, every song. He saved my mental health and if I ever see him I want to hug him. And I have three questions to him to ask, but I don't say here those beautiful words and questions. Only after I meet him. I am so lucky to live this era, this world, same time as Tuomas and all the members been in Nightwish and having all Nightwish albums since 1996. Tarja era, Anette era and now Floor era. I know many reactors focus on Floor Jansen, it's okay. But the true master mind behind this beautiful music is Tuomas. The drummer is Kai Hahto, been several years, but I watch many times older Nightwish songs where Jukka drumming. I just love his style. Jukka is reason I wear bandana always. Maybe you want to react the document "Please Learn the Setlist in 48 Hours" but there are many other documents also of Nightwish. Tuomas has also own project, Auri. His wife sings there lovely song, Tuomas' long dream of making a song of Disney, song is "Life And Times Of Scrooge" maybe you want react that too. Have a nice summer and greetings from Finland.

My introduction to Nightwish was about 10-11 years ago with Tarja's version of Sleeping Sun. It stuck with me for about 3-4 years before I found Ghost Love Score and I became hooked on this great band. Floor's version of Sleeping Sun from the Tempere concert is amazing also. You mentioned Tuomas could probably play with smoke blinding him or having his eyes closed. Have you noticed Kai plays the drums with his eyes closed?

Your interpretation, actually the two you gave, of the lyrics, right or wrong, make sense to me. That's one way of interpreting the song. Like many have told you it was written for the 1999 total solar eclipse. There's a 254 video playlist "Sleeping Sun Sinking Ships". Sleeping Sun Tarja version playing, with pictures of various ships sinking. Titanic, Britannic, Lucitania, Estonia, Costa Concordia... one with Britannic has 56 million views in 5 years. There's even one with pictures of the air ship Hindenburg in flames. Watch on your own the official music video of Sleeping Sun, with young Tarja, the video is very simple. And also watch the 2005 version official video. The guys of Nightwish fighting with swords as knights. A lot more effort put to that video.

Death is beautiful and deserves beautiful songs. We are all death-adjacent. Worrying is a waste of energy. And yes I've heard the suicide interpretation countless times for Sleeping Sun. It clearly conjures that thought within many people, which is perfectly fine.
