I never knew there was such a thing as an ice atom (there isn't), there is only ice molecules, and if memory serves me correctly the ice is made from deuterated or heavy water, the neutrino is being detected by the deuterons within the hydrogen. The reason has something to do with how deuterium is made in the sun in the PP reaction, every time a proton turns into a neutron when two protons smash into each other, a neutrino is released so it's no wonder that they interact a little bit.
