The brooder box is getting pretty crowded and it is time to move these baby quail out to the grow out pens. During the summer I move my quail outside at about 2 weeks old. I had to make a few modifications to my pen to make sure they could get to the water.

Hey Chris. Here's a tip. Try putting a few cups around the bottom of a plastic coffee can. Easy way to ensure that the baby quail get their water without having to completely revamp your water system. It's an easy DIY set up that's super easy and can be used or taken out with no mess.

Hi Chris, once again I come to you with another quail question. All my females outside are laying eggs and are 8 weeks Sunday. However I have 1 lady in my house. She was injured as I think I mentioned on a different video. I took her to the vet where he said it may be soft tissue damage, but he was sure it was dislocated. He would need to do 200.00 X-rays to know for sure. As bad as it sounds I explained that she is NOT a pet and I wasn't going to spend that. I asked if she was in pain so I knew if I was going to go on and put her down so she wouldn't suffer. He said no she made no noise when touching it and they adapt quickly. We keep her in with us as she can't have a full life outside. She can't move fast and sure couldn't get in the sand box or house outside. We did feed her antibiotics for 10 days the vet gave. Could that have an effect on her, do you know? Is it possible to get females who never lay? Also my boys are in a above ground hutch. it has 2 sides and 2 sandboxes. I have 4 males in each side. It's a good size maybe 7ft long. I thought this was good enough but they keep going at each other. 1 was bloody and he too is now just in our house. I don't know if they think they are matting or what as they go for the feathers on the back of their heads. Is there too many maybe? As soon as I think I am going above and beyond things seem to not work. Thank you for your time
@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 6 жыл бұрын
hey there. As far as the hen not laying. If she was injured and taken to the vet that is a pretty stressful experience for them and it will take her at least a few weeks to get over it and start laying again. As long as she has about 14 hours a day of light she should start though. Don't eat the eggs until she is off of antibiotics for at least 30 days. It is pretty common for quail to get aggressive with each other no matter how much room they have. Especially when they first come into the breeding cycle. If you can identify that one bird in particular is the more aggressive one you can remove him and that will help. Usually they work those things out themselves and the injured birds heal up just fine but it sounds like you may have a bird or two that is more aggressive than normal. I hope that helps.

VERY helpful thank you. My husband went on and processed 4 of the males that were attacking even him as he tried to change food and water. Now with 2 on each side they are still as can be. Thank you for the info on my girl. We will wait a bit longer and more patient, it was an hour ride to find a vet that took birds so I know she was really stressed, and the vet didn't mention not eating the eggs, so thank you for that information. Hope you had a great father's day

How did they do Chris? I know when mine starting hatching 7 weeks ago I took the brooder light off of them at 2 weeks of age. Less than 5 hours later I had 3 die. I never took the light off of them after that. I did however take them outside brooder box and all for 3 days in a row. I was hoping this would help them adjust from artificial red light to real sunlight and outdoor sounds. It worked and they were out and on the ground before they hit 3 weeks, we just made sure we put their brooder light in their house on a timer for a week to ensure they stayed warm if they wanted to go in.

I did lose a few when a storm and cold front came through but for the most part they did just fine. I should have paid a little more attention to the weather. We ended up with a pretty good storm and the temp dropped down to the 60's. Some of the birds got wet and chilled and ended up with losing about 6 of them. the rest are doing just fine though.

Hey Chris, I am incubating my first lot of coturnix quail. They started hatching about 2.5 days ago. There is about 16 in all. Could i get your advice? 2 have splayed legs and one really badly - is there anything which can be done? The band aids seen else where don't really seem to help. Also, another one is scratching its bum with its beak often, like a lot. It's tiring itself out. Is there anything which can be done about that as well? I am am really novice here Chris - thanks if you can help.
@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 4 жыл бұрын
I am so sorry to hear that you are having problems. I am also sorry about the slow response. Splayed leg can be very difficult to treat. Unfortunately, it may be too late for your 2 birds. I find that it is usually caused by late hatching. That can be an indication of a temperature issue in the incubator but if it only happened with two birds, it is probably just bad luck. Sometimes adding vitamins to their water (thiamine and vitamin E) can help (along with splints to hold their legs up) but I find it hit and miss. I usually have to cull out those chicks eventually. I am not sure about the one that is scratching. I don't think I have ever seen that before.

Great info in this video. One question I have for you is the wire on the bottom, is that 1/2” hardware cloth? I was wanting to build a grow out pin but didn’t know if 1/2” or 1/4” is what I should use.
@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 5 жыл бұрын
I use 1/2 inch wire. 1/4 won't let the droppings fall through. You need to wait until the birds are about 2 weeks old to put them on it though. I hope that answers it.

are you sure they aren't using it? If you go out and press the yellow plunger and fill the cups up do they come running to it and fight over drinking out of it? If not, they are probably using it just fine. If they do then you may have to do that a few times a day for a few days and they will figure it out. I hope that helps.

Well if you are talking about Georgia Giants, those are a form of bobwhite quails and I am not real familiar with them. As far as the jumbo coturnix quail go, i have not had any experience with them that would make me consider them to be week birds. I hope that answers it.
