After travelling a month in cold humid air, I finally cross the climate divide in southern Texas. Falcon State Park has a lot to offer for those that love both the nature and recreation. But how does it compare if you are a budget traveler? My full review!

NOTE FROM SLIM: I should have mentioned that the cell phone issues with signals from Mexico happens when you are in ROAMING mode. As a Canadian, this is a given, as I have a US/Canada roaming plan. If you are American, just turn off roaming and you should be fine. But if you are Canadian, WATCH OUT!!! SP

For some goofy reason on my comment earlier, I was thinking that CA and USA had the same carriers. So I didn’t even think about that roaming issue you’ve got, I’m tired 😂

Hey Slim , You may not know this but there was a county park right next door to that park. its free for 60 days and they have water at most sites , fire pits, picnic tables , dump station and even hot showers all free. i stayed there in Jan 2021. Another tid-bit is there is a picnic area you can stay at going west to the highest bridge in TX. for free overnight. i stayed there too on my way to AZ. Good Luck

Hey Slim, looking at your front bumper at 1:11 it looks like you are missing the lower valance air deflector that hangs off of it. It's not a huge deal and gives you better approach angles for offroad things, but not having it also negatively affects your fuel mileage. Something to keep in mind should you want to try to increase mileage. Replacements aren't much and I believe they go on with plastic automotive pins, could probably get one cheaper off a totaled truck at a you-pull junk yard. TFL Truck channel did a mileage test with their little white Ram 1500 a while back where they removed it and it made a fair difference for them.

You have to find the sweet spot on your truck. My van is 58 MPH to get my best MPG's. Cruise control works the best for me. Your expectations of 15.1 MPG is probably a stretch but I'd say it's not impossible

I have a 2008 Dodge Durango, 5.7L HEMI which I bought in 2018, and was getting 12.5 mpg. Slowly I did all the OEM recommended maintenance, including new platinum spark plugs. Accidently, I learned to drive at 55-65 MPH which improved the mileage to 15.5 MPG. The key is to keep the engine RPMs below 2000. I set the cruise control at 55 MPH and use the accelerate button to inch the speed up to 65MPH. Slowly using the button keeps the RPMs below 2000. Hope this helps.

No need to turn off roaming. You just manually select an American carrier rather than use auto select. I'm suspecting the Mexicans boost their signal to slightly overpower the American signals.

Your drive north should be full of other places to stop and enjoy too. I wish I was you and could trip around. I'd never leave Texas. Its got it all. Tip on ants. Chew some bubble gum and then put it away from your camp spot a little way. Ants will move to another area and enjoy it.

You might have mentioned this previously…if your tire size is different than what the truck was originally built with you shouldn’t use the odometer as the actual distance covered. Larger tires will result in odometer readings that are less than the actual distance driven and vice versa.

Ah ha! I thought you might have discussed this before. There are so many variables that can affect fuel mileages…tire tread, rolling resistance, etc. Everything has its trade offs..more aggressive tread better off road traction but lower rolling resistance. Wife and I have decades of trailer travel under our belts and really enjoy your videos. Keep it up please!!

If your looking for better milage you should replace your PCV Valve which will help and only costs $20-30 and takes 5 minutes. Then you should replace your spark plugs/wires. Both repairs are very reasonably priced and very easy to do and can affect your milage drastically

I averaged 14.4 mpg with my Taco 6 cylinder 4 x 4 on a 3000 mile trip to and from the middle of Montana last fall. Pulling my Scamp. I'm too lazy to look up it's weight. But I'm a little jealous of your trailer - I think it's lighter and I have an air conditioner sticking up into the slick stream. That's disappointing for me. I did much better, generally, with my older Taco with a 4 cylinder.

Falcon was our spot to escape to in January for the decade before Covid. We spent the month in the section you stayed in. There are water spigots throughout. It is also a no-reservation area. If you stay a week, the last day is free. You missed one of our favorite features. It is the double wash sinks with hot water on the back of the shower house. We washed all our laundry there and would hang on lines under our shelter. The desert dryness sucked the water out in less than an hour. Is the clubhouse by the butterfly garden still an active place for the campers. There was a community of snowbirds that came back every January and February. Really miss our winters there.

Little did we know at the time the one of the park rangers was my aunts brother. Growing up in this area seems I have relatives everywhere. It has grown and improved since then. FYI: It was not named after the falcon bird but after Maria Rita De La Garza Falcón, and of course she is also a relative of my Grandmother. LOL.

Slim you need a van. We have everything in our Ford Transit you have in your Casita, but we get 17.4 mile's per gallon. We kept the build light. And...we can stealth camp for free.

A fully customised Ford Transit would be a huge investment for a vehicle with a single purpose. Not practical for a budget traveller like me. I don't want to have to haul around my bed and kitchen when not travelling. To each his own. SP
