Slingbow fishing has been on my bucket list for a long time. But today i got a hot tip from my old apprentice and i'm headed out to slingbow some suckers for a catch and cook since i have never eaten a sucker before and the remains will make great bait for my lobster traps.

Along with the water deflecting the flight of the arrow, there is also the refraction of the water, meaning you have to aim, as you found out, much lower than the eye sees.... good video!

Even when spear fishing with scuba gear, we have the same problem in the water.

The point,I think, is the angle of attack, I mean the angle at which the arrow hits thecwater. A 30 to 60 degree angle would alter the path of the arrow. Aiming at an 80 to 90 degree would be better. There is also the material of the arrow coming into play. A wooden arrow would be less efficient. A meatal thinner one would be more efficient.
@usernamemykel
@usernamemykel 3 жыл бұрын
@@sidamarali3030 That's NOT the point. The issue is the "refraction" of light because of the water.

Actually the water does not deflect the direction of the arrow as much as water diffracts light waves as they pass through water so that you must always adjust your aim low depending on the depth of the water and the angle of the shot. It is an art that is learned with practice thus the benefit of all the shooting at the can.

The arrows don't go high, it's actually the error of parallax. It make the object seem like it's higher in the water column, so when bow fishing you always have to aim low

Watching every episode. I just want to weigh in on aiming in water. It’s actually more about the refraction of light that forces you to aim lower than you’d think. 😀

The Catholic monks knew from the middle ages that carp were good eating, and built extensive pond systems throughout Europe to farm them, for consumption on Fridays, as they weren't allowed to eat meat on that day of the week. They also gain weight faster than almost all other freshwater families of fish with any similar level of feeding. This also led to some strange ideas - the barnacle goose was widely held to hatch from barnacles (which of course it doesn't) but that myth led to the name. The reason it went unchallenged for so long was because (or so the reasoning[?] went) if it hatched from a barnacle it could be regarded as a fish, and therefore allowable for consumption on a Friday! I suspect most of the aiming difficulty you had was due to refraction of the light at the boundary between air and water, which also accounts for why it is easier when shooting directly downwards. Or to put it in very simple terms, it's not so much the arrow that deflects as the light you observe it with.

my mom used to can suckers, pressure cooking them, which made the bones soft, tasted better after canning as well, almost a salmon taste. I was also going to comment on the refraction , but i see many already have. the more vertical you are to the fish, the less an issue it is, more angle, more refraction . Good shot on that first one, beer can practice helped!

You also could cut it into pieces bread and frie them then put em in a bowl with a mix of spices, vinegar, water and onions put something heavy on top and leave it about 3 days.... The acid of the vinegar will soften all the bones so you don't even feel em anymore when eating. In Germany it's "sauerfisch" wich means "sour fish" but it's not that common except u go fishing a lot :P it's tasty tho

If it was me I think I would try and use shorter thinner arrows with a slim long cross head tip. You would lose some distance on your shots, but there would be less deflection on entering the water and less displacement to disturb / worn the fish. Also you need to take into account refraction causing a distorted view of the angle you would usually have. I wouldn't like to say exactly what the angle correction would be. I'm certainly not a trigonometry student by any stretch of the imagination. But my knowledge and experience attaining from 25 years of carpentry and joiner and from what I have researched for this comment it is 90° . This is called the critical angle of refraction. Like the visual appearance of the change of angle of a straight abject in water. I hope this may be of some help to you in the future. Keep on making the fabulous inspirational videos that me and so many other people love. God bless you and your family

Another reason carp aren’t as common for eating is because they are garbage fish which means they eat garbage sometimes, so it’s better to eat something like trout, salmon, bass, catfish, suckers, and lots of other fish as well.

We have some giant carp here in the northeast especially in the Merrimack River in Massachusetts. They are so good but yes very boney but ground up and used in like hushpuppies or carp cakes or carp balls which are kinda like hushpuppies. The carp or sucker is a very underrated fish and its because of the bones.

Being an avid bowfisher, it is not so much that your arrow is being deflected by the water, but that the light is being refracted by the water. The fish is not actually positioned where it apopears to be. You can stick your arrow half way into the water and see that your arrow appears to be bent at an angle at the water line. The basic rule of thumb on aiming is; the deeper the fish is in the water, the further below the spot the target appears to be you must aim. Fish at the surface require no compensation. As they drop deeper into the water column, you must compensate for refraction.

The problem you had with your aim is called refraction. Light penetrates water at a different speed than air so where you "see" an object under water is not really where it is. The "bend" in the arrow flight under water is an illusion too due to the same refraction. Yes you have to aim low very low for a hit. Slept through high school physics class but learned this same phenomenon when learning to harpoon tuna. Same rules apply "throw under the fish an lead him" for a hit on a swimming tuna.
