I'd like to see this idea applied to a sword, if only as a movie prop style mockup. There are twin swords in that style with the blade and hilt being the same length, like the one used by Gordon Liu in "Kill Bill Volume 1". But with this mechanism, you could make a similar twin sword set with shorter grips but longer blades, resulting in more natural short sword proportions.
@PenneySounds
@PenneySounds 9 ай бұрын
You could even design a full length Katana where you draw a normal Katana out of a sheath, but then pull the top end of the sheath and draw a second full length Katana. The first one would be basically a normal Katana but with the blade mounted slightly to the side, and the second one would have an extending blade of this style that extends by the length of a hilt, while having a pass-through for the other Katana. The first Katana is a normal fixed blade, and the second Katana is part of its sheath but pulls out to be the same length as the first one. Not at all practical but would be very cool in a movie.
@PenneySounds
@PenneySounds 9 ай бұрын
Or you could have swords draw from opposite ends of a sheath like Shinomori Aoshi's twin Kodachi from Rurouni Kenshin. Though while his are two short swords point-to-point in one extraordinarily long sheath, with one hilt disguised as part of the sheath, you could fit full length blades into a single normal sized sheath and still disguise the second hilt as part of the sheath.
@crozraven
@crozraven 9 ай бұрын
I would say it can even be applied to a more compact version of a polearm like a nagamaki or pudao or even greatsword, depending on the overall length of the handle, while the scabbard is half the length of the handle. Basically an almost 2 meter polearm can be compacted into 1.2 - 1.5 meter instead (with a top scabbard), like a normal arming sword length.
@PenneySounds
@PenneySounds 9 ай бұрын
@@crozraven A Nagamaki could just be done as an OTF. No sheath needed. But something like a Naginata or Pudao could be done either by having the blade be an OTF and the handle extend out the other side, or it could be a folder. If the handle is double the length of the blade, you just need to make the blade fold in and the handle fold in half and it would close down to a third of the length. Making the handle fold could even accommodate a blade twice as thick as the handle.
@crozraven
@crozraven 9 ай бұрын
@PenneySounds OTF used spring system & I doubt locking system could handle the mass of the blade. My point is this design is much simpler & arguably stronger for a longer/heavier blade. in the case of nagamaki example, let's say we have 100 cm handle, while the blade 130 cm (already included 20 cm full tang for strength), that would make overall sheathed mode up to 130 cm, while the unsheathed mode up to 210 cm, which is pretty impressive. You can basically carry it like a normal katana.

I love the idea and will try to get one. However, the "probably not think that this is a knife"-part could become a problem in Germany. In order to prevent a classification as hidden knife ("verdeckte Hieb- oder Stoßwaffe", which would be forbidden), please chose a look that clearly shows it is a blade weapon (e.g. the black finish of the Tanto prototype).

What i like here is that when worn in the small of the back, putting it away after use is easy in comparison to a standard sheath knife. Trying to get the knife in to the sheath which is behind you would be hard and dangerous. But with this, you sheathe the knives, then you would just be clipping a unit into its holder with no blades exposed 👍

Ive made some wooden models since i saw your videos of the first prototype and another way of carrying I've found is having a belt loop between the blades, and pulling it apart to detach it. That way theres no need for any pouch or attachment piece. Obviously with a sharp steel blade deployment could come at the cost of cutting off that belt loop as well as having the blades slightly in open position but I think i think with a little tweaking this carrying method still has promise

@@nirodha7028 A button (un)lock on one side ( the longer blade side) would be cheaper to produce, be considerably less complex and would facilitate easier sheathing. So no, I don't see it being a problem. Regardless, still like the concept, it's great, but I do wonder how the knives would feel given the blades aren't centred in their respective handles?
@nirodha7028
@nirodha7028 9 ай бұрын
@@space.youtubewell… An unlock button on the outside would be possible yes… it would not be cheaper in any way though. You are not creating less parts or assembly steps then we already have in the currently defined design. The off centeredness of these blades is pretty much similar to the Temu short ones… so if you own a pair of those you can get a sense for it. We really maximized the closeness of the blades relative to each other. There is only 2 mm of material in between them.

Perhaps there could be mirrored vertical grooves between the blades in the touching surfaces to accept a knotted piece of chord to suspend them from?
@nirodha7028
@nirodha7028 9 ай бұрын
I like the ingenuity of this thought. It would be possible but I see two challenges: - The groove would actively take away overlap between one side of the blade and grip currently aiding in its balance and strength when fully extended… Even if only 1.5 mm for a 3mm thick cord it does mean taking away 6,8% of the overlap. - There is nothing keeping the blade handles from sliding apart besides the friction of the blades in their own handles when you pull them out towards their locks. This is also why the current holder is shaped around the guards to ensure the blades don’t slide partially open by accident. In the case of your cord suspension idea that would mean you instantly lose them. Thanks for thinking outside the box though! That’s how great ideas happen.

Thumbs up! AND, you might consider a double edged version where legally permissible, as "UP close and PERSONAL" Edged weapon fights are always a bit chaotic (been there done that) and you might find the ability to INSTANTLY cut from ANY direction worthwhile. Double-edged blades are also superior when dealing with an assailant wielding a club/baseball bat or wooden fighting stick/staff, as they can 'bite ' the surface of the former making a strike easier to parry/deflect/ or bind the aggressor's weapon while attempting to disable/terminate him/her. (former VN era- FORCECOMM HQ XVIII AIRBORNE SpclServ/War "SKYDRAGON" LEO here..) One final comment; you MIGHT consider disguising a version of this thing as perhaps a classic long shaft flashlight routinely carried by many types of military/security or law enforcement personnel. In any event, a marvelous creation:)

I carried a butterfly knife when I was InterRailing in Europe, back in 1970's. A good tool for most uses.

I wouldn prefer stability over more blade length. Its the mechanism not the length, that makes the knife incredible!

Blade length is still very important here because it is visually striking to see a blade emerge from a handle half the length. I’m sure they will get the right balance of blade length and stability. Not every knife needs to be full tang, these knives are for show.
