I have 3 of the feeders in the background, as well as 3 of the next size larger feeders (from the same company), in my front yard...entertainment for my cats! They work GREAT for keeping squirrels, as well as the 'big ugly birds' (greckles, red-winged blackbirds, etc), while still allowing chick-a-dees, sparrows, finches, cardinals, etc. to feed. Chipmunks, though, are light enough that they can feed at the feeders. The best part though, is that while the bigger critters can't get into the feeders, they will hang out on the ground, under the feeders, and clean up the left-overs! :)

@@Vixtorz The birds drop enough seed on the ground for the ground feeding wildlife, the squirrels included. I enjoy watching the squirrels. I put up a 6 foot long by 4" diamater plastic tube in the garden and put the bird feeder at the top. Put a thin coat of vaseline on the tube two years ago have not put any more on since, the squirrels can't get up, just keep sliding down. If the tube is too small in diameter they can get a better grip so 4" diameter is optimal.

Last year I spent around £ 225. 00 on bird feeders & different types of bird feeds. The squirrel broke some of them & they were a real pain, so this year they all came down ! No more bird feeders !
@v.gorski30503 жыл бұрын
If the little squirrel could break them, then you need to purchase a better made feeder, built with metal cages and a special perch that closes completely when the squirrel lands on it so they cannot get to seeds. There are models out there that work very well. Google the topic: “Squirrel- proof bird feeders.”

You should trap the squirrel for a short time, and find out what foods it would prefer to eat. If it's an intelligent and reasoning squirrel, maybe it would be capable of understanding how to barter for some food the birds don't eat that will sustain it in it's natural habitat.
@MosMan92GP3 жыл бұрын
What you don't see is that the squirrels get plenty of food from the bird seed that falls on the ground below.
@DarkVoidIII3 жыл бұрын
@@MosMan92GP I saw that. What I'm saying is that maybe there's persuasive methods of convincing the squirrel it could get something far easier and better for it's dietary needs if you could trap it for long enough to survey it's food preferences. It might not be so eager to make the bird feeder spill the food out if it has another ready source it can turn to. There's a video of a physicist that made a box just for squirrels to find food in and eventually the problem squirrel seemed to like using it instead of disruptively banging the bird feeder about.
