Love the Federalist. You can catch it on sale once in a while. Definitely an excellent value IMO

I love the blade on the Appalachian Drifter but I think detent "slipjoints" are a terrible, unsafe idea for a knife that actually gets used (less unsafe in the hand they have a finger choil, but still lacking the closing bias of a true slipjoint in the pocket). The Rustic Gent is more appealing, being a lockback version of the Drifter, but I wish they had used 14c/Nitro-V/154CM instead of D2.

Sure. That blade shape is cool. I just got done carrying a RealSteel GSlip and I have to admit, I like the feel of a real slip-joint better than the double detent!

@@homeslicesharpening Have you tried any Spyderco SlipIt knives? Kinda the best of both worlds, they have a slipjoint backspring and a sort of detent that clicks in when opened so you have a very defined break to start closing the blade.

So in this day and age with all the locking possibilities, why would they still be making slip joints especially in good steel?

I am not sure - it is seen as refined, classic, and non-threatening I suppose. I buy them when I like the design. A plus is that makers will often go to a very thin geometry in a slip-joint perhaps thinking "Well, without a lock, no one is gonna be dumb enough to pry with this..."

It also has to do with legal restrictions, for example, you cannot carry a knife with a locking blade in the UK regardless of blade length

I am also noticing high density food get's a fairly good bite on deviations in the side of the blades I am testing. - I ordered a chefs knife with Graton reliefs to run through my test set-up, curious to see if that effects cutting force requirements. - To be fair I need to test against a blade with same thickness profile, which I may need to grind out myself. - I will share updated & new charts with relative data.
