Whenever I’m feeling depressed I just get alone in my room, listen to the lyrics of this song, and cry my eyes out. I usually break down after Corey says “withering away take a look inside, my soul is missing”. It brings me back to a dark past, but it feels good afterwards, and helps put things in perspective about my current life.

I'm 21 and hated school and it was such a nightmare they put me in a unit for difficult kids where I kept my head down until I could get the hell out of there. School made me chain smoke and compulsively smoke weed then end up an alcoholic who when put under stress of the rampant mental illness in my family ended up homeless from lashing out and being kicked out and then selling drugs for money. I honestly needn't have gone as I ended up with no qualifications anyway, in all honesty I didn't care enough about it and would have been fine without ever going. I don't believe in God but almost wish I could for a sense of belonging. My family were former Jehovahs witnesses and I think it's put me off all religions for life. I think for most people they don't hate the idea of God it's the thought of having to go into someone else's building to worship such a thing. If your experience has been negative organised religion becomes poisonous for you all you see is judging and limitations to who you are. It's organised religion people hate the most; although I do think anti theism is more popular just because it's easier not to think about than pay attention to something which usually doesn't impact what you want to do anyway especially if your morals are loose and you know thinking that way will hold you back from being what you need to be to survive.

VinAnd Sori I'm glad someone does mate haha. My ranting is usually what makes people run away, at least in my experience. Thinking too much is bad for you I think. Bit off topic but what I've always thought is the school system along with many others doesn't support what you're really good at, they want to mould you into something that only some people can even stand. Some people for example are funny as a talent but instead of having that lead you and having that skill nurtured they scream you into a drawer in an office until you don't have a clue who you are and supress what makes you an individual. Kids get ruined, they get who they formed to be changed by bullshit and curriculum and their interests mostly discarded. Anyway haha rant over. I used to be a full on atheist until a while ago and now I'm older I don't know what I believe I think I'm more an apathetic agnostic if that makes sense? I know you're Christian but do you find it's the community or is it the organised or personal aspect to what you believe that keeps you there. I've always thought if you aren't willing to betray what you believe and stab it in the heart to test it then you never really believed and just liked something to hold onto. I know this is probably a strange thing to ask in comments but what would you recommend for someone who doesn't know how to approach anything to do with God but feels like there's something they want to get in touch with they just don't know what? In all honesty I don't know if it's God it's just something pulling at me to get out. I don't know if it's the community thing or what but something is pulling me to look for it recently. Probably the fact I'm on the UK version of welfare living in seclusion drinking and swearing at my TV since my relationship got smashed to pieces over nothing. But hey; if that's hit me in the head to try something I suppose I better try at least? Just thought I'd ask as you seem like someone with experience of this sort of thing. Sorry for the long arse message, feel free to ignore it if it's too much.

Life is an unbroken chain of complex chemical reactions which extends back over 4 billion years. To our best knowledge is unique to this universe if not astronomically rare. If you can't see the special privelege we have to even have an inkling of insight into knowledge about this universe. God or no God both ways that our world could of come into existence are equally impressive and astounding. Reverence in God is equivelant to being awe of the universe and existence. God is ill-defined.

15:30, Vin laughs off an argument of atheist point of view. 21:00 Vin tells us that just laughing off an argument is a bad strategy. I'm not saying who's right or wrong. Just want to see people practice what they preach. There were parts that could carry a condescending tone were it intentional or not. I myself begun to seriously question God at the age of 8 when I forged a religion in my imagination. Sure it had a lot of the same building blocks that Christianity has, but if you look at it, so does every major religion and most of the not so major ones as well. I could say that this new religion I found is the truth and there could be no argument. Just the same as with Christianity. The question becomes why is this religion the right one? Why is this word the truth? All of the major questions of an existence of a higher being and the afterlife are by design unsolvable. Even though you believe in emotions and what could be called a soul, being in part at least hormones, and nerve-endings firing, it doesn't mean you believe that's all there is. The existence of effective medication for depression is because the neurons and hormones do have to do with emotions. You can see meaning and value in feelings even without existence of a God. Heck, you see value in existence of a God as well. I remember vividly the moment I stopped believing in God. I was in my early teens and walking in a forest. I finally after a long doubtful period accepted, that there was no God, no afterlife, no hell and no heaven. I imagined a state of non-existence and came to terms with it. Slowly. It was hard. Afterwards I found myself feeling better than before. If there is no after this, then it matters more what I do here, not less. All the worry about getting to heaven and fear for hell were gone. I could just focus on doing what I can to live my life to the fullest. Trying my best to make people I love live happy and full lives. Taking care of people who are within my reach of helping. Trying to be a part of nurturing a heaven here in earth, and not be a part of constructing a hell. There is also comfort in the emptiness, that is often overlooked. I subscribe to most of the christian values. The ones that make sense to me. The ones that add value to my life and others. The same core values found in almost every religion. My view of what I would call "God" is more rooted in human nature. I see the "divine" in all the virtue humans are able to achieve, and the "devil" in human will to do harm, but I don't believe in any external all seeing and omnipotent entity. I accept and believe in that I do not know the truth. This is just the path reason and long arduous self-searching and search of the said truth has taken me. Most of the atheists I know, myself included, center their belief in uncertainty. "I cannot say this to be true without credible evidence". It's not a certainty in non-existence of God. But rather "Given the provided evidence, it seems to me, that God does not exist."
@levischorpioen

What I find incredibly interesting is that, even from the very beginning, right when they ended the song, the very first thing out of Vin's mouth is how "these are the children of nihilism" and "why do we talk about God all the time? Because this right here is a life without God." It's incredibly ironic and hypocritical that Vin has such a disdain for nihilism, when "there is no meaning in life other than God" (paraphrased, but we all know this is what he means) is possibly the most nihilistic thing ever.

Religion is mostly indoctrinated from birth anyways. born in the west you are probably christian, born in the middle east you are probably muslim. it's easy for theists to follow their god and think its the right or only god. it takes much more to break out of what your parent likely taught you and view the world with an open mind. it's fine to believe something but its equally ok to not know, because the reality is nobody knows the real truth.

Levi Everaerts Also I'm a bit dissapointed that Vin basically said that atheism leads to nihilism. I was negatively surprised because he's smarter that that. I mean if 63% of France was nihilists I don't think that country would exist anymore.

Kai Marcad Hell, he keeps equating atheists to spree killers. “Existential self-awareness.” These guys only are aware of themselves through a third party (God), so again, whose life here has more meaning? And who is the more nihilistic one? I’m not going to lie, the views on suicide, depression and atheism are downright terrifying in this video. It’s like he thinks all atheists are just Christians pissed off at God, because he literally can’t comprehend someone being of the opinion that there is no God at all. I have an entire breakdown of this video typed out, I wish I could post it somewhere but it’s way too long.

Vin did point out the destructiveness of the nihilistic world view, and I agree with that. I believe a God and all that comes with that is an answer to questions too painful for some to leave unanswered. It gives hope, meaning and purpose and a sense of safety to people that need it. And that is a wonderful thing. It really does have real world utility. I just don't see it as the only answer.

This is an older video, great song too, it got me through some rough times as a young angry teen. I like how you guys go into depth with the lyrics and the quality of the music! I just wanted to chime in that I feel like you two must run into the cliche atheist who's only interest is to argue religion. Probably someone who was raised religious but found science and think they know all meaning to everything. They don't, it's impossible for a single person to know everything about everything. I was raised atheist, still am, my father is an astronomer and we will tell you that it's not science's job to prove or disprove God. It's for us, the human species, to understand Nature. And as far as the value of other people, like ones who want to jump, everyone is here going through the struggle, it's a shame to make someone else's struggle more difficult. Besides, that person could be the next genius who helps the world! They are stuck and need help, no one person can weigh the value of another person. It's just not possible for one random person to place value for everyone else about another person, not to mention unethical. That's why we have juries, and why we have communities, cultures, and societies!

Don't normally sit through an entirety of your videos but considering the song I had to as I am always curious to see the take-away by a given person. My own interpretation now isn't far off from Vin's, but it is very much different than what it was when I first heard this album in 2001. As I've come "full-circle" in my own beliefs I am still discovering the subtleties in this song and the power of both main verses and the underlying. Not many songs capture the potential mental/spiritual state of a persons existence on either side of the spectrum and sometimes somewhere between, this song to me is the auditory embodiment of such. I really enjoyed this reaction, excellent work, God bless!

I am heavily scientifically influenced, but i am christian. I don't really see what is wrong with idea that emotions being neurons firing off. We are so beautifully created by God, our bodies are made so they can capture something special unique, self awareness emotions those are all simulated by brain, yet when we die i imagine God takes that energy, experiences, things that we have done and sends us to the place that we deserve. I think that death is THE MOST abstract process, that is the moment that we truly become something more, something uncapturable, the moment when those neurons stop and we actually start to exist beyond the physical. I find it beautiful that God starts some exact processes in our body that makes us alive, we are state of the art, amazing and special, just think how lucky and amazing it is to be created by God and have a chance to feel and experience everything. When i fall into depressed thoughts i just try to remember that i am born with purpose and that everything really happens on purpose and then it kinda all makes sense who knows why will you be thankful for some ugly stuff that happened to you yesterday. From all I've written you can see that i am not a grown up, i still need to figure out some stuff this was a rambling, but looking at things this way i find it easy to cope with most of existential questions and that stuff and i hope that you can understand what i actually meant.

In this song, Slipknot lead singer Corey Taylor is reminiscing about a bully who used to pick on him. Taylor often talks about how his disgust for bullies and anyone who uses their strength to hurt people who don't deserve it. In this song, he has finally snapped and is letting loose his aggression, singing about his desire to kill this guy and make him feel the pain he has inflicted.
