I haven’t read the book, because he sounds articulate and capable of expressing himself in a meaningful way, I will. Typically I don’t care what musicians, actors say. Most are high school graduates at best and spent their “post years” partying. I love Snoop Dog, his style his music, etc. But I weigh his personal beliefs knowing the beliefs are being expressed by a person that is open about the fact he is still a “card carrying” member of either the “Bloods” or the “Crypts,” I forget. But that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have a right to free speech nonetheless. There is one word found throughout America’s founding documents about our individual freedoms that I think too many Americans are forgetting. That word is “indivisible.” This means there is only one right of free speech which cannot be divided into “only for them / only for us.” If I believe freedom of speech includes the right for me to tell the KKK or any other group whose beliefs offend me, to shut-up, then, by my own definition this indivisible right that is freedom of speech, I must give someone who is offended by my beliefs the right to tell me to shut-up. No thank you. I would rather defend your right to express views that offend me, than to allow you to keep me from expressing my views that may offend you. US Supreme Court Justice Brandis, the first Jewish Justice, one of the most liberal Justices in all time and who history has credited as being the one person that did more for civil rights (e.g. gay rights, etc.) than any other one person, Justice or not, said, as paraphrased by history, “the way to combat hate speech is by more speech, not by putting restrictions on the freedom of speech. ” This is the exact same position taken by the ACLU, even in regard to on-campus anti-gay protests (look it up). I would rather the KKK show their “true colors” by speaking their stupidity so anyone who chooses to join such an organization knows what kind of moronic philosophies that are going to be asked to defend. About me for fair disclosure, I am hoping for a third political party in America someday to, if nothing else, put a check on the Democrats and Republicans and consider myself an independent. But for those of you that need people in pigeon-holes, you would put me in the Republican pigeon hole. I am fiscally conservative, but socially liberal. If you are not punching me in the face, or the face of someone I’m sworn to defend, WTF do I care what you are doing if it blows your hair back. Lastly, if you are still reading and this post makes it thru (pretty long) here is one of my favorite quotes on this topic. “It’s very hard to win an argument against an intelligent person.
