Greg M - You don't play any instruments, correct? Ya man, this is very, very basic stuff. It is very easy. As in a lot of hard rock and metal, the bass just plays the root note of the chord that the rhythm guitar is playing. The reason a lot of people say that a lot of rock bass is easy (not all...but quite a bit of it is like this) is b/c of what I said about. Think, when a guitar player plays a chord, they are going play anywhere from 2 strings to all of the strings (we'll assume he is playing a 6 string). If it is a song where the bass is just going to mirror the rhythm guitar, as they just want to add some low end and thicken things up, the bass player is going to play exactly what the rhythm guitar is playing....but instead of playing the whole chord..he only has to play one note/string of that chord. He just plays the lowest note of each chord. hehhhe.. Sorry about the long and dumbed down explanation. But if you don't play any instruments and don't understand why people think Grey's playing is 'easy'..this is the best way to explain it to a non musician. ...think the bass in an rock song that you think "you can't hear the bass'. My explanation explains why. It is there...but it is just mirroring the R guitar with root notes on the bass. ...Listen to pretty much any Motley Crue song and you'll hang this..except for odd bass run/walk..etc... you dig?

@jincsz Slipknot have said MANY times that Europe is like thier second home and the festivals in Europe are like NOTHING anywhere else in the world, they are incredible celebrations of music. I understand your point and it would have been a fitting tribute to have their first show back to be in Iowa but they're not traitors for not doing that. Maybe it's not even possible. Slipknot it a global band, not local band anymore. They're not just 'doing it for the money' just cos it's not in Iowa.

I lol just no 34 inch scale bass drop D then a step and a half down thats sloppy strings. Ryan Martini uses a better bass Warwick thumb 4 and 5 string. as a metal bassist has a better tone. I respect the guy but hated his tone and how all that was usually done was follow guitar. Some section need either rest/ something different in conjunction with guitar or something on its own all together.

My favorite bass tone for metal would be Alex Webster's of Cannibal Corpse. Come to think of it Alex is a fingerstyle player. Paul's playing is not meant to cut through but to blend with everyone. Kinda surprised he hardly distorts his signal unlike Rex Brown (Pantera) and Justin Chancellor (Tool).

the reason that he plays 115's is actually really simple… for all of you haters, which is what i use on tunings from drop b which is what he is playing, not b standard… totally different tuning. so the bass plays like a bass in drop d, but dropped down. not in standard tuning feel like a 5 string. also why would you want an extra high string you never play, its doesn't make sense anyway, 110's are way to light, they flop around in these low tunings and hit the pickup. 115's are still a little too light for drop b tuning, but notice he uses bends. i believe thats why he uses that gauge. also, any one can play with their fingers… jesus. the reason he plays with a pick, if you were to solo the bass and drum stems you would notice that slipknots drum sound is very tight, and when you are playing in this low tuning a pick produces a sharper tighter sound, this is much better for low tuning in metal music. notice the click sound on the slipknot kick drum, and add that tight aggressive pick sound with the bass and bam, you sound awesome. now of course you can achieve this sound with your fingers, but it produces a slightly rounder sound. and if you've ever worked with a major studio producer doing a record with a major record company, which i have they always make you go with a pick, or at least strongly recommend it. i have been in 2 multi platinum bands and after extensive touring, and having the opportunity to play any basses i want this is my breakdown… i alternate between fingers and pick, sometimes on the same song. if the song is heavier i will use a pick especially if the guitarist are all doing down strokes with their picking. if its a ballad type song, ill use fingers. i use 4 fender basses for touring, 2 jazz and 2 p bass, both four string. i tune everything down half a step. one jazz and one p bass is tuned to drop b, NOT B STANDARD!, i have one gibson t bird, i hate it…it just looks cool, and i have to warwick corvette standard 5 strings, german made in nirvana black. they sound amazing. i don't play active pickups, passive only for me, and i use orange or mesa boogie amps depending on the project. and a massive amount of pedals, mostly distortions and fuzz, and a wah. for those of you who are beginners don't listen to any of these haters about he isn't a good bassist, he was a great bassist, and not only that….he has outsold every single person on here in record sales, so basically you can take your comments back to your day jobs and wish your awesome technique was put in a video on you tube. if any of you have any more questions, hit me up.
@charliesno
@charliesno 9 жыл бұрын
+clsalvaggio1 also you guys remember, there is no wrong way to play your instrument, do whatever you want. its like painting, its all about your art, whether its water color or oils, or both. nothing is wrong… as long as you like it. let it come from the heart… and remember the bass is in the rhythm section, and you should be holding down the fort, you don't need to be fancy, actually the simpler you play the better most times… runs or fancy playing for no reason is actually a sign of NOT being a professional. sometimes less is more, but if you have a cool break and its just bass and drums…do it up! Rock is NOT DEAD! keep at it. but i will say definitely spend equal time practicing with a pick and your fingers. and ill leave you with this, good job on choosing the bass, everyone plays guitar…a good bassist is one of the hardest things to find, this puts you a step up in the game!

After a deep listening on the demos (1995 S/T,mostly MFKR, Gold Disc aka "Crowz era") i came to the conclusion that Paul was a fucking master at bass, the bass lines on the song "Confessions" are fucking gorgeous (the opening is clearly inspired by AIC "Rotten Apple"), the bass on Do Nothing/Bitchslap, the best bass i could ever hear in my life, on Fur (1995 song) the opening riff is fantastic, to all who's reading this it's all personal, i wanna say that on my favorite bassists Paul is at the top. When Paul was still in slipknot i think he surely contributed to the slipknot sound we know, sadly in the following albums the bass was hard to hear and in Gently from Iowa i was used to hear the bass (from MFKR obv) but i nearly heard it, i don't get this. And last, not to say Alex sucks (so far he hasn't surprised me) but Paul was the best at it. (ik it's edited nothing changed except this)

+Maki Ka Tzee The love he gets is from being a part and creative force of such awesome band and being a cool dude along with giving kickass live performances for all these years. As for playing, Slipknot is probably one of the best examples how less is more. Take a look at their early work, Self-titled and Iowa. easy to play, nothing advanced and stuff and look how much love they got for it. I'd say he's more likely to be one of the most awesome, instead of the greatest, even if he was the most skilled player it wouldn't be neccessary to use them mad skills since Slipknot songs aren't too complex in terms of instrumentals ;) (most of them at least), and simply don't need anything different than he played.
@HellishPunch
@HellishPunch 9 жыл бұрын
+Maynz +Phil Trashb#1 Finally I got some good reasons, thank you. But I have to be honest I still can't find anything so amazing in him. I'm a "less is more" fan too, I enjoy minimalistic music, but I really hate bass line that follow exactly what guitars do. For example Martin Mendez from Opeth is a really good bass player, not only because of his technique, but because of his lines that fly all around the songs indipendently from the guitars. Listen to The Leper Affinity bass track and you'll understand what I mean
@mayunz4029
@mayunz4029 9 жыл бұрын
Sure, I understand perfectly. I prefer the same way of putting a bass track into songs. However, As long as I don't find anything 'greatest' in following guitar patterns too, I find Slipknot songs awesome and that is sufficient for me to like him.

To me his one of the best cuz the way he played and wrote the songs. For bass he did what bass should do . He never took the credits. And he plays like this cuz it fits slipknots music. If you want to see his top potential listen to their mfkr album.

There’s always someone better then someone else. Get over it dude. Nobody really cares. He’s Paul gray from Slipknot. Not Matthew from Mudvayne. We came and watched this video cause were fans of Slipknot, Therefore fans of Paul. Not to mention PAUL wrote a Massive amount of Slipknot’s music.

Sam Allan But he was good lyricist and songwriter. Majority of Slipknot's best songs have more influence from Paul rather than outstanding instrumental accompaniment. In my opinion Paul helped create Slipknots sound even without playing anything but intermediate bass lines.

+joe Costello that is the most ridiculous comment I've ever heard. i am a bass master, and i can shred on guitar too.. and guitar is a weak instrument. I've played stadiums, and when a guitar goes out…no one notices..you loose the bass and everyone notices…the bass is the girth of the sound…it shakes the planet. thats why i chose bass… go listen to a tool record and then reply.
