One of my favorite memories is tied to Firefly. I parented two girls into adults, all the while trying my best to get them interested in certain sci-fi shows with limited success. (DS9 stuck; Star Wars did not) One winter, I needed to go out and I grabbed this toboggan with the earflaps and pom-pom, went out to do what I needed to do, came back in, saw my wife and girls around the dining room table and said, "Hey, guess who I am?" Eldest: Pippi Longstocking? Me: What? No! Jayne! Eldest: The Hero of Canton? I don't think so. I had *never* shown them that show. It warmed my cynical heart to learn they found it themselves.

It is easier to write the way to live than conduct a way of living that is crystal. Many authors, scientists, politicians, actors showing us how many of them are business driven creatures as the whole industry is. Firefly is the ideal I dream about but only few of us will be able to realize it. I know one person whose family is like a mini Firefly crew. It is a marvel to watch them. Sadly the more I watch the series the more I get frustrated by the world around and myself. The white noise of ever present business is such a toxic atmosphere to live in. these kind of shows rarely make money (in the short term) . I screamed at my sister why her studio decided to make a movie from a failed TV series. She said we know we would lose money, but we really wanted to convince Joss Wheddon to do some TV series for us, and so we were willing to eat the loss. Lot of our classics are cult favorites. They don't make money , until they get syndicated. Battlestar galactica, the reboot, was a loser, but the studio kept it going , because it was well reviewed and anchored the entire sci fi network. And don't get me wrong I loved the movie, But economically it's a hard sell.

Bushwacked's ending was very logical and quite satisfying. Yes, Alliance won't let Serenity go, but it wasn't the Alliance that made that call. It was the cruiser's commander - a decent man with certain preconcieved notions that push him into the villains' territory. He didn't "try" to pin the Reavers' atrocities on Mal and the crew, he simply didn't believe in Reavers (having never encountered them), and so he made a logical next step. We clearly see that he learned a thing or two.

And it would have underscored how messed up the reavers and would have strengthened the audiences hatred for them. And that hatred would have made for a large conflict of interest once the origins of the Reavers was revealed. Both the Serenity crew and the audience would have been conflicted since we would be hating people for stuff that was basically not their fault. It could have even led to people shifting their burning anger from the Reavers to the Government.

I did get the feeling this guy was only watching about 80% to 90% of the talkie bits because he misses key little details. In Safe they turn up all gun-toting and big damn hero style. They didn't know the Tams were about to be burned... but that also didn't know they had made friends and played nice either so the crew still would be mounting a rescue from kidnappers. It's a bugbear of mine that reviewers shout pothole or convenience when they just didn't listen to the dialogue or the plot. For example, seeing the Alliance as a big bad guy when Inara and Book and Simon are all alliance. The alliance is a Utopia being constructed. It will fail probably but there are strong reasons to support it. In a system that has rich billionaires enacting their rape fantasies on whole moons and sadistic mud plantation owners there is a reason for a civilising unification war... even if it fails as it succeeds.

For me its top 3, we learn that Jayne ultimately is a scumbag, with his heart only interested in money...no twists, no second guessing, he is what he claims to be, the beautiful thing being; so is Mal...he's not a heartless piece of trash, but he'll gladly, let you die a very slow death, if you ever betray him or his crew. While one might think that Mal let him (Jayne) live because he has a soft spot for him, he really only does so, to prove a point and to keep a reliable crewmate on his side...Jayne will actually do anything for the buck, however he's also efficient, as the job was done cleanly if not for the betrayal of the alliance officer. Mal knows that while dumb, and cold, Jayne has his uses.

Concur. I consider "Out of Gas" to be one of the finest hours of television, ever.

I love Ariel. It's probably my third favorite episode after Shindig, then Trash.

20 years! Where’d that go? Granted I didn’t watch it until after I saw Serenity. Still, what the hell man!

I still enjoy the Firefly re-runs on Tubi. One of my all-time Sci-Fi favorites.

16:55 They do explain why they couldn't do this earlier. The time crunch situation of Book being shot meant they had to go somewhere they knew would have a doctor instead of flying around looking for forest people.

Great review, great show, my favourite Sarah Paul performance.

I didn't watch this series until I bought the DVD box set a few years ago. At least i was able to watch each episode in the correct order. I wish the Sci Fi network or AMC would have picked up the show. I think it could have run for a few more years.

I watched Firefly for the first time in 2015. How big smile I always have when in the old movies I see the crew. Few month ago I have re-watch Matrix 3. I was in the cinema back in the days not knowing that Zoe is in it ;) The same goes about Buffy's team.

I bought the series (and the movie) then rewatch the series in order, which I didn't get the chance to do while it aired. I enjoyed the hell out of it.

Mal is Robin Hood, and I'm guessing you know that. Comments do help the algorithm, don't they? I've been watching your Series Restrospectives for two days straight. Nice work. Thanks.

Let me just say. It is so rare I genuinely laugh out loud while watching KZbin alone. And I burst out laughing when you talked about getting Jayne repeatedly on character tests 😂🤣

It was outstanding. So much heart from deeply flawed and human characters. The antithesis of modern Hollywood. They should show this as a paradigm of how good TV could be, in comparison to the drivel and 'content' we get today

Im kinda surprized you didnt talk about the Star Wars lore involved into this series. With looking for "Carbonite Solo" in almost every episode and the glimse of an Imperial Shuttle in one of the loading docks. Joss is a huge SW fanatic.

Another show I was planning on watching! Gotta move it up to watch your video 💪🏽 Again haven’t watched it but I know it’s another great video, love your videos and I hope more of them go big like the Dexter (how I found you) cause you deserve it.

It’s worth it. As a browncoat I may be biased. But it’s my favorite show of all time and holds up to this day. Yes there are bits we can pick that have issues. But in comparison to long lived sci-fi shows it pulls you in immediately and has a quick pace (looking at you Star Trek.

One of the 'reveals' that annoyed me was finding out about Book's intended backstory. Lot of the 'inconsistencies' vanish if you imagine him as a retired Alliance Assassin....

That was hinted at in war stories. I figured that out really quickly.

This channel really brings me back to the 2004-2008 era of tv. I had a bent for watching cancelled-too-soon shows throughout the aughts, usually being funneled to them by avclub tv coverage back when that site didn't blow. I wonder how Wonderfalls and Dead Like Me hold up
