Roland Garros 2011, 4th round. Fognini seemed to be down and out because of an injury, which made him move just enough to hit the ball. We never thought this would end like this... Like & Subscribe for more Tennis content! Twitter: twitter.com/sLlorcaTennis

Fabio Fognini is one of the most creative talents in tennis I have ever watched. He demonstrates the raw power one can get when one is still and balanced, with no energy going in the wrong directions, all energy going to his hand and then the racket. I don't judge him by grand slams but his sheer ability to hit the ball, and his pretty funny personality. He is on my list of favorite players of all time. Tennis would be so much greater if every player would trust and find their own style, and live and die by it as it looks like Fognini has done. Bravo Fabio.

Montanes had to continue with the smart tactics - repeatedly playing drop shots, to win the easy points against Fognini. Also, I guess, from the psychological standpoint, it's hard to play against an injured opponent, because you feel less motivated and playing (and perhaps winning) such an (unjust) match. But... such is life. That day Fabio gave his best despite the tendon and sealed an unlikely victory :)

Montanes should have taken better advantage of the situation and probably against a higher ranked player Fognini would not have stood a chance, but you have to give Fognini some credit. He's got a rare ability to generate pace that he uses to good effect even when he's fully fit - here he made absolutely the right decision to just swing freely and apart from a couple of lucky net cords his winners were not accidental, they were the result of great talent and intention.

Can you be closer than that to win a match ? The kind of match that can break a career for the loser. Anyway we can see what a truly talented player can do, which is unleash effortless powerful shots using almost only his arm, barely any footwork... and there's nothing you can do about it. nothing! The opponent gets crushed without really understanding why a man barely standing on his feet can send him bombs over and over again. This is more or less the same thing he did to Nadal at the US open where he was going for his shots and there was noting Nadal could do about it. It's difficult to understand why suddenly after 4 hours of a match the guy transforms into super saiyan and becomes untouchable... not a lot of players can do that. That also makes me think about Djokovic vs federer at the us open saving 2 match points on Fed's serve while he seemed mentally already out of it.

If anyone is going to beat you using only their arms and not moving, it's definitely Fognini. At least on his forehand, you can see the whip he's building up. But on the backhand, somehow *bang* the angle is completely redirected and the ball is going 100mph. It's really very WTF. And amazing to watch.

You don't see Fognini threaten to shove a ball down a lineperson's throat for 10 foot fault calls. I thought men are doing things that are much worse

Winning or losing this match wouldn't have made any difference for him I guess. He was already aware about the impossibility to play the QF... Too bad
