Nadal had one of his toughest defeats of his career in 2009. He had never lost in Roland Garros, but Soderling made it to then get to the final and lose to Federer. Next year, Robin defeated Federer and got to the final once again, where he would face the king of clay. The story wouldn't be the same this time. Like & Subscribe for more Tennis content! He was at his best in 2009. And also in 2011 when he almost lost, and on other years. Many times proven he is beatable. Beatable, but hard task, and if the player who has the chance does not believe in it, like Del Potro, or Djok, or Isner, then you lose the opportunity and the confidence of the court return to this very very good player. The Swede had proper mentality when he was on great day.

RN’s 2009 defeat to Soderling was truly one of the greatest upsets in Slam history. The guy had already won four on the spin (not to mention the previous Wimbledon and the AO of 2009).
@ElReyDeClay
@ElReyDeClay 3 жыл бұрын
You just know 09 ate at him for an entire year. He had something to prove for sure and he went flawless that clay season, attaining the first ever clay slam (all 3 clay masters & RG). All the 5 set dramatics at AO and some physical epics with Novak during that clay season really took their toll on him in 09. But he was so much fresher in 2010 and moving so much better and almost as aggressive as his godly 08 RG campaign. When he's on, healthy and motivated, its like going up against a tornado. Soderling was no slouch though, he'd fry pan the crap out of those balls. It was awesome to see Rafa rise to the occasion, from the ashes anew, quiet the doubters and start off a 5peat.
@michelez715
@michelez715 3 жыл бұрын
If you read Rafa's autobiography, you'll know that travelling back from the AO, his father told him he and Rafa's mum were separating. Also you know from the book that his family means everything to him. The news devastated Rafa, it took him many, many months to recover his emotional equilibrium, and I'm convinced it played a large part in his defeat by Soderling. He just wasn't his usual self, mentally.
@ElReyDeClay
@ElReyDeClay 3 жыл бұрын
@@michelez715 True. That was definitely another major factor. That definitely destabilized him and took away his focus: his family life instantly turning upside down on him. Just seemed like a confluence of things went against him that year, which sucked. At least it made 2010 all the more sweeter I guess.

Monfils and Tsonga confirmed Rafa had a serious cold those days. He was ill but didn't publiced it to the media. Also, he was having personal problems. That still comes as a better performance than his 2015 performance against Novak. He played quite close to his original level in 2009 I believe. @jeresosa9744

So you are saying that this result happened because of Rafa´s situation and that´s it? Basically, according to your logic, Soderling can be taken out of the equation, put any other player, and it would have been the same outcome, just and mostly because Rafa had problems? Really? Besides, how did it Rafa to win the 3 previous matches (this was 4th round) if he wasn´t ready to play? You know, Robin Soderling, as the info in the video says, just to prove that this wasnt pure luck, made his way to the final AGAIN next year. So, we could say, that MAYBE, the guy could play some tennis. According to my logic, if you enter the court, no matter if you are Rafa, Novak, Roger or the 100th guy in the ranking, if you enter the damn court, you are READY to play. If the injury (body or mind) is very serious, you just can´t play. All the players on tour, ALL of them, have physical problemas, pain, and personal problems aswell. They have to live with that, and the can still play, because they are PROs, so you know, maybe Rafa has played with personal problems many other times, but he still won. You´ll never know. My point is, this whole logic about putting the big star (in this case Rafa but it´s the same with all) as the victim when they don´t win, I dont buy it. It sounds like a bitter excuse in defeat. This guys can lose too. The big 3 are the best, not just because they hit the yellow ball better than the rest, but because they can handle mentally all the situations around the sport, winning and LOSING

1:28 Some of these commentators man. This guy watched Nadal dismantle Federer multiple times, Djokovic, big servers, great baseliners at the French for 5 years, go undefeated in his entire clay season, but acted like Nadal doesn’t even have a chance to beat Soderling. @@ElReyDeClay They’ve gotten a bit better about this more recently, but they always talked about his defense. That’s all. They acted like he was talentless and brainless but since he “tries hard” and is fast, that’s why he’s great. In reality, and as we’ve seen especially these last few years, Nadal is one of the most aggressive baseliners ever. He bullies guys around the court, he rarely misses when he’s attacking because his strength allows him to attack with margin, he’s an absolute machine at net, and I’d argue he’s the best tactician of all time. The reality is, he’s more well-rounded than Djokovic and probably even Federer. He has the best mix of offense and defense of all time. Hell, on clay he’s probably both the best offensive player and the best defensive player of all time. That’s how good he is. The only things that have held him back are his serve (which he’s fixed) and injuries.

What a strange career Robin Soderling ended up having. You got the sense he was coming into his own in 2009, and backed that up with a stellar 2010 season. And then he all but retired after 2011. I read his article where he spoke about struggling with anxiety and mental illness, so I'm sure that took a toll, but I think had he found the tools to deal with these struggles he definitely would have won a Grand Slam.

It is because Nadal broke him mentally. Nadal beat Soderling in the 2010 French Open final, 2010 Wimbledon QF, and 2011 French Open QF. I am sure that if Soderling had beaten Nadal even one more time he would have continued his career. He thought for the longest time that he was special when he beat Rafa at the 2009 French Open but he saw with his own eyes that that was one of the greatest flukes in sports history in the 3 Grand Slam defeats afterwards.

@Ronalgordo Жыл бұрын

Soderling has to be the unluckiest player. He was finally coming off age, making it to to Q/F of almost all slams in 2009-11 period before he was forced to retire prematurely due to glandular fever at the age of 26-27. If not for this notorious fever he would have definitely nicked couple of slams in next few years since he was not a one surface wonder and he was performing well even on grass and hard courts.

People like to make a meal out of the 2009 loss since it was his only loss in 10 years in the whole of nadal's prime from 2005-14. To put that into perspective, djokovic (07-16) and federer(03-12) had more losses in their 10 year primes at their favourite majors than nadal had at his. That said nadal beat soderling in staights in this 2010 match and in 2011.

La humildad, la nobleza, la grandeza de Nadal en unos segundos: 0:56 - 0:60 , cuando Rafa se retira tras su derrota frente a Söderling saludando a un público miserable que le habia hostigado durante todo el partido. Something to point out here about Soderling, how can I miss two chances to win, consecutively, RG? He beat Rafa in the semifinals, to face Roger Federer, and the Swiss defeated him forcefully. A year later, he faces Federer in the semifinals, defeats him and goes to the final against Rafa Nadal and he retaliates for his defeat in the semifinals by the Swede. This is what I call not having a winning mentality, where Rafa, Roger and Novak are experts in that field, period!
