One of my favorite songs of all time. How a band as catchy as Sloan failed to break in the USA I'll never fully understand.... I just count my blessings that I grew up in Upstate NY (Albany) and that we got MuchMusic. When I saw this video in summer '96 my world was turned upside down. This was all pre-internet music, so I had to wait until a college trip to Ottawa to actually score this CD. ¡Viva Sloan!
@colinclayton80423 жыл бұрын
I think it had to do with the fact that the US Geffen label wanted to sign Sloan and make albums that were similar to their first album Smeared (think sonic youthy, alt rock). They changed up their sound obviously and wanted to continue making power pop music and so Geffen ultimately didn't sign them and they faded into obscurity in the US.

@@evansmith4489 I’m actually distantly related to some Sloans here here I live. Even one of the sheriffs in the late 80s last name was Sloan… which is why when I first discovered Sloan in 1998, I assumed there was someone named Sloan in the band. I was 19 years old and stationed in Korea when for my 20th birthday, my dad sent me a box. One of the items was a VHS tape with videos he recorded off this Canadian music video channel… I forget what it was called. But Money City Maniacs was one of the videos on the tape I listened once, and then spent the next few hours in my barracks room rewinding the tape to the beginning of that video, then listening over and over again. I was legitimately blown away

I grew up in Albany, NY, where we had the good fortune of getting Muchmusic but the misfortune of being unable to buy Canadian import CD's. I remember taping this video and watching it endlessly. Incredibly hook-filled power pop! I finally got up to Ottawa a year later and was able to buy the CD. Happy to report that 23 years later, the band was incredible last night in San Francisco.

I grew up hearing sloan. My mom played it in the car on our way to school and stuff. A few years ago, a band I was in played at a music festival in Toronto. A band with some members of Sloan (can't remember the name) was headlining. Almost nobody was there when we played. By the time the sloan guys' band went on the place was completely packed and people were freaking out. I think the flaming lips were playing on the other side of town but it seemed like everyone was at our venue. I had no idea Sloan was such a big deal in Canada. Nobody I knew had ever heard of them. 👍

So, skid row, Toronto, middle of a hot summer day I'm walking past the dudes with the B-Tooth spkrs. These are some fairly gangster guys. Not Jane and Finch, but you know. Someone got Jay-Z, next is playing Drake. Last guy he's playin', I hear "I. CLOSE. MY. EYES. I CAN'T GIVE IT UP. I. DOSE. MY. MIND. I CAN'T GET ENOUGH" I'm not really paying attention so I don't recognize it yet, but I'm thinking 'yeah, this sounds pretty gangsta' Then it clicks, these guys are listening to Sloan! I'm floored. Guys pushin' fent, coke, and heroin are listening to four white guys from Nova Scotia. Only in Canada. And it fit, at least for a few seconds. I walk away with a better opinion of both Sloan AND the druggies. Awesome.

Let's see how well I remember this from the MuchMusic Spotlight... Jay Ferguson: It's a scene near the beginning of the film, Easy Rider. It was an idea of Andrew's. He said, "Look how cool this looks!" and we said, "Yes, this is excellent!" so we decided to rip it off shot-for-shot. Chris sat through the whole video made sure every angle was the way it was in the movie. It's a cool exercise to me. Chris Murphy: And in the transfer we copied the colours, the way the colours were in 35 millimeter. Pretty elaborate, and I guess... confusing in the end for the... programmers.

@maxrockatansky31027 жыл бұрын
Sloan being from Halifax, I believe this video was shot at the end of the runway at Halifax International Airport. I work in one the hangers there and this area looks exactly like the scene in the video. This is also where that Air Canada flight crashed short of the runway a couple of years ago. The plane clipped the telephone pole wires running parallel with the road and bounced off the top of the embankment behind the band and ended up on the runway. Thankfully nobody was killed but the aircraft was totaled.
