It really bothered me when Kim and Thurston got divorced. When I was a teenager they were the coolest alt rock couple alive. It just seemed like they had the perfect marriage, money, music, art, cool, touring. I guess nothing is ever what it seems. I read Kim's book and you could feel the pain of her divorce and the betrayal she felt with Thurston's affair. Whatever his reasons it just felt she deserved more then that. I hope she has found some happiness all these years later, she certainly had a mark in my life.

Gordon has done an amazing job of turning her weakness into a strength. She's one of the most consistently flat singers in music yet has leaned into in such a way that it totally works in context. With the raw vocal material she's working with there's a hundred ways she could have been bad and only one way she could have been good, and she found it. I guess it means if you don't have a traditionally "good" voice, don't despair, find a context it works in. Les Claypool is another perfect example. He's got good pitch but his timber is...unique. Try to imagine him fronting just about any other metal band to see what I mean. Yet in Primus it's the only thing that makes sense.

They were an influence but so was all alternative and grunge, bands like the Pixies etc. They had direct influence on bands like Nirvana (Kurt wanted to write songs like them and Pixies) But they deserve more recognition? They’ve had a shit ton especially Thurston Moore. Only someone either super young or just discovering this music for the first time or just generally ignorant would say Sonic Youth hasn’t had enough recognition. There’s plenty of bands for whom they actually aren’t recognized enough - you should seek them out.
