Was it necessary to pull the transmission to do this job? I did a similar job on my e30 without dropping the trans, but it didn't have the sheet metal style shifter. Now I need to do this job on my e21, which does have the sheet metal shifter. Was most of your play coming from the two bushings that attach the front of the sheet metal plate to the transmission itself? Or was it more attributed to the shift rod bushings?

I would say it was a combination of all of them worn out over 30 years. I took the trans out, however I think you could replace a lot of this with it in the car. It wouldnt be easy but you could do it. Especially now that you see how it all goes together.
