I've made this twice. The first time was FANTASTIC but I forgot to put the sauce in the fridge after cleaning up so only got to enjoy it for the first serving. :( Made it a second time and I happened to have two jazz apples that were starting to wrinkle so i chopped them up and threw in the slow cooker along with everything else, and it really did give it that extra level of apple flavor.

Wonderful as usual! Winter's coming, and it gets cold here in Canada, so I would love to see more slow cooker recipes such as stews, roasts, or anything that warms the cockles :)

I just made this and it was amazing! I did not have a pork roast so i used a pork loin . I also ended up using sage, rosemerry and tyme. I did not have fresh parsley. This really is a very good recipe and i highly recommend it. I will definitely make it again with the pork roast.

Chef John, apple juice is soooooo funny - LOL ....... But seriously...................... We made this today, and it was awesome! Ours was a bit bigger - 7.5 pounds - we .adjusted the liquid, etc to accomodate the roast. Our time was 6 hours, 45 minutes. Thank you for a lovely recipe! Don and Carol in Carson City (it was snowing while we tended the roast!)

Made this on Saturday, it was great. My family loved it, and said it was a keeper recipe. I did add about 1 Tbl of pickling spice to the crockpot. But other than that, no other changes to the recipe. I made spaetzle for a side. It was a yummy stick to your ribs dinner for winter.

Yes, you can easily do this in a dutchoven in your oven at 325 for about 3-4 hours. You can also sear the roast and cook the vegetables all in the dutchoven before throwing it in to cook. Your classic one pot meal. Slow cookers are nice but definitely not necessary if you have a decent dutchoven....and I actually think things come out better in the dutchoven anyway.

wow omg I cooked this today. That sauce has amazing deep layers of flavors! But I ended up cooking the roast about 1 hour too long when I cut it, it wanted to be pulled pork. But all in all it was Delicious, that sauce really does take it to the next level of flavor! Thanks Chef John. I strained my sauce too it was nice dark with lovely shine when I finished.

@iluvmypet no, slow cookers use radiant heat and can cook for long periods of time. They have user controlled heat settings as well. Rice cookers only have 2 heat settings, on and warm. When the rice absorbs most or all of the water being used to cook it the temperature will rise in the cooker. The cooker's heat sensor detects this and either changes the heat to warm or off. Though it can cook other things, I wouldn't recommend meat as one of them :)

@Chantzehao13 жыл бұрын
@teethinaboxx If you throw in flour/corn starch into the liquid, it will clump up. If you really want to, you should dissolve the flour in a little liquid first (not the big pot) so its easier to stir all the flour in, then add it to the pot. But I think Chef John added the butter for a bit of flavor along with the texture. Flour will just thicken it and won't add any flavor/texture/oil to it.

Question: Is there a downside to searing a roast after cooking it as opposed to before?
@stevenhaas96227 жыл бұрын
why would you do that? The whole point is to get that brown flavor into the braising liquid.

Made this for the 3rd time today. Love how low maintenance it is with few ingredients and few steps for good results (aka good mom recipe hehe) I had to buy two smaller cuts so I didn't have to flip them at all. Try adding a splash of soy sauce then eat it over rice!

Rice is nice but dull as a brick, try cooking it with a veggie stock cube, some fried onion and some other bits, like sliced green beans, sweetcorn, whatever is in the freezer.
