Love your review! This is a somewhat hidden gem that deserves more attention. One little important detail, Spider set up River to fail in his "test run" debacle. He tricked him, and got him sent to Slough House. I think the point is, that River actually IS talented, but people assume it is only nepotism that got him the job, and refuse to acknowledge that he was set up. Equally though, River tends to arrogance and probably needed to be brought down a peg. It is precisely this nuance of character that make the story so good, that and the humor. Slough is an actual town in England and has the (I'm sure unfounded) reputation of being the dullest place in the country. The original british season of The Office written by Ricky Gervais was set in Slough, hence the nick name Slough House as in the last place you want to be.

The thing with British TV crime dramas, is that they are very different from ones made in the US. To start with they are a lot shorter about 6 eps to a season, whereas in the us it tends to be around 24 eps to a season. With the shorter seasons it allows them to spread the story over the whole season, which allows them to go more indepth in to it and how the characters intert act with it. In the US, 1 ep is a story in to it's self, so it does not matter if you miss an ep or 2. Also British ones tend to be a lot darker, and have a more realistic view on life, in the US the main stars tend to be good guys, maybe with a flaw or 2. Some I would recomend to watch. Spooks (2002-2011) The very 1st ep, starts like an US program, then ep 2 just breaks the mould, the ep that almost canceled the show. It's also the show that a lot of British spy shows try to emulate. Luther. Staring Idris Elba, if you liked Slow Horses you'll like this. The Capture. Season 1 got 92% on Rotten Tomatoes and season 2 100%

Your views on US dramas are extremely outdated and seem like they were written 20 years ago. Most US dramas now are around 10 episodes a season, heavily serialized, and often feature morally grey or outright despicable protagonists (The Sopranos, The Shield, Breaking Bad, Fargo, etc.) I do get that the networks like CBS and NBC often still run with the format you described, but when most people think of US TV dramas, they're thinking of shows like Breaking Bad rather than NCIS.

I just finished the first season and was so surprised no one I know has even heard of this show. It was so well written with great twists and dialogue. Gary Oldman gives an amazing performance, Lamb is layered and I can’t wait to see more of him especially after the twist at the end of S1. I was a bit disappointed with River, it didn’t feel like he had much of an arc, I guess arrogance is a big part of his character as he really thought he’d leave Slough house after his first successful operation but I just wish I had seen more growth from him considering he’s the main character. Either way there’s still s2 and 3 for me to see and I can’t wait to see where it all goes. Loved it

I just finished episode 1 of season 1; and I can see that this show has the quality potential of other BBC shows like Misfits, Being Human and Luther. the one thing that puts me off is the political leaning. I understand that in current times western entertainment feels the need to shove far-left ideology into storylines as a means to greenlight projects which i'm willing to stomach for the time being for the sake of said "potential". But if this show decides to make itself not another hour long drum beating to "left-wing good, right-wing bad" every episode of every season; then I'm afraid I won't get that far. Lol Thanks for the spoiler warning.. Starting episode 2, fingers crossed.
