PCRI's Alex asks Mark Scholz, MD about urinary symptoms and the treatment of BPH using alpha-blockers. She asks about the level of relief a patient can expect from these medications (if they are effective) the potential side effects, and the duration of potential side effects once the medication is stopped.
0:06 How do you think about symptoms in regard to prostate cancer, BPH, overactive bladder, or other related conditions?
2:36 What are the side effects of alpha-blockers?
4:15 How long do side effects remain if a person stops taking the medications?
4:34 What does "success" look like when treating men with urinary symptoms from BPH?
5:29 What kind of physician can prescribe alpha-blockers? Can a general practitioner prescribe them?

Much as I admire this series, I am surprised there was no mention -- let alone overall frequency -- of IFIS (floppy iris) especially with Flomax or the rarer incidence of painful priapism (a medical emergency) with these meds.

Hi, ive a question for dr scholz! Ive heard that after radiotherapy treatment the chances of getting secondary bowel or bladder cancer rises from 1% over time to 50% chance after about 5 years! Is this true? 👍

A question - once you start these medicines, does one need to continue for lifetime or is it supposed to be for a limited period ?

Tamsulosin is the generic version of Flomax, mentioned in the video. I am on blood pressure meds (Losartan, metoprolol) due to a heart attack, but initially I didn't experience side effects with Flomax, but after about a year, I did start to develop lightheadedness, and may have led to low blood pressure. A few months ago I fainted (syncope), and because I really didn't notice any improvement with my urine flow, I stopped the Flomax (after discussion with my Urologist)... no more lightheadedness. For my BPH, I'm currently on finasteride (Proscar), but not sure if its actually working either. BTW, I'm on Active Surveillance with a low volume Gleason 3+4 PcA.

@@Gerrysjamz I was in the same situation as you, my eye surgeon advised me to continue with my medication, they could accommodate it. Two cataracts replaced 6 months ago no problems. Speak to you surgeon. Good luck.
