I agree, shoegaze music in general has aged very well IMO
@e32b612 жыл бұрын
I can’t disagree with this statement. Britpop is very dated. That being said, shoegaze will forever be stuck in the same niche it was in back in the day. Curious ears will find it, but it will be listed as an “influence” rather than a powerhouse. No one will ever make it big by making shoegaze music. And that’s okay. Maybe that’s the secret to its longevity. Like a certain type of folk music, it will feel timeless but never come to define an era. Even those who associate it with the 90’s can only say so because of their own personal life experiences rather than a seismic cultural shift.
@ruste9565 Жыл бұрын
Nope the other way round, bands like The Auteurs/Black Box Recorder or Suede are criminally underrated meanwhile boring shoegaze that was never cool in the 90s is now the hipster’s bees knees, I’m a musician and pedal collector/abuser and I’m tired of young folks who weren’t alive then thinking I must play shoegaze/ambient because I have a shitload of pedals. No wonder the doomed generation prefers boring basic stuff like “NY/DC Hardcore” or “Shoegaze” (there’s young peeps who think the Smashing Pumpkins, a band I adore and always cite as an influence are shoegaze, only one song if the pumpkins could be considered that and it’s Daydream from Gish). I never really liked Oasis, I admit much of blur hasn’t aged well (whilst other did age really well) and despite I used to love them Pulp should have disbanded in 98 and never reunited…

Slowdive 2017 is my favorite album from them. I was never huge on Souvlaki as a whole, but I do think “When The Sun Hits”, “Melon Yellow” and “Machine Gun” are fantastic, 10/10. This album, though, has so many awesome songs and pretty much no duds. Their best overall album imo. Pygmalion was alright but was quite lethargic, had its beautiful moments too, though. “Blue Skied an Clear” is one of my favorite songs in the genre, plus “Miranda” and “J’s Heaven” are nice too.

I remember listening to Souvlaki when i was in college and got so obsessed with it because it's atmospheric undertones and the instrumentation. Especially the song 40 days , and Souvlaki Space Station. Then i went back to listen to just for a day and it's one of my favorite albums of all time , i fell in love with the sound of Avalyn I & II , She calls and Primal. Slowdive is (in my opinion) one of the most underrated groups to come out the British music scene in the 1990s , it's melodic and somber sounds has such a feel good type of formality , which is rare to find nowadays , but i believe bands like beach house and cigarettes after sex are obtaining the traditional aspects of shoegaze and dreampop that Slowdive invented in some degree , i love this band and I'm super excited with whatever they'll have coming out.

I always had the impression heavy guitar shoegaze aged, but Slowdive stayed uptodate, because of their more minimalistic-digital approach. No I see they got no recognition at the time. Slowdive got recognition anyways and heavy guitar shoegaze got a new place. Britpop is forgotten as just a phase. I love to see these docs. By the way, I witnessed some of the most early reunion concerts in Belgium, and it was very special indeed.

One of my favourite bands ever. Still have my rather old, faded and tatty original EP T-shirt (large offers considered, lol.). Me and my friends helped the band carry their equipment down the stairs from Ceaser's Palace, Aberdeen the day before Morningrise EP released. I was underage for a drinking establishment and rather drunk, but Rachel let me carry her guitar for her, glad I didn't drop it. We discussed with the band how our local independent record shop had allowed us to buy Morningrise the day before it's release and we had listened to it on repeat before the gig. Not sure they were happy as it takes a days sales off the charting positioning.

Just saw this, and I liked it. What I like about this most is the photo references and video clips which give a little more understanding of the hair and fashion style (or lack thereof) of the band and more importantly, just how young they were in the 90's. I also appreciate the matter of fact chronological flow of their records and the reviewer's blurbs. I'm scratching my head at a few (very minor) errors that appear more in the copy editing realm like saying "Catherine's Wheel" instead of Catherine Wheel, "Blue Skied an' Cleared" instead of Blue Skied an' Clear, and "linear" notes instead of liner notes. Also Rachael shares the vocal during the chorus of Alison, I don't know why you said it's a Neil solo vocal. I agree about Pygmalion not really fitting in, but it's a unique, amazing album. I read somewhere Neil was getting into amphetamines and more or less holed up in a flat experimenting with a then-new digital workstation (clunky and outdated by today's standards). I think he even plays the bass, maybe I'm wrong but Nick might have left the band at that point; it's very much a Neil solo record. There are moments of bliss (Blue Skied an' Clear), melancholy (Visions of LA), mystery (Rutti) and menace (Trellisaze), all in a reverbed dream haze. It's such a cool record.
