Hey Friend,
Join me in the Homestead Kitchen while I make a recipe of my Nana's, Old Fashioned Potato Doughnuts or "Fasnachts".
Thanks for watching!
Kelsey
Recipe:
Single Batch (20 3" doughnuts)
4 cups AP Flour
1/2 cup Sugar
1/4 cup mashed potatoes(plain)
1/4 reserved potato water
1/8 cup warm water
3/4 cup warm milk
1/2 tsp dry active yeast
1 egg
Combine flour and sugar together. Combine all other ingredients making sure nothing is too hot, too much heat will kill your yeast. Aim for lukewarm to warm.
Mix wet with dry and begin working the dough, kneading for 10-15 minutes until smoother and softer with a bit of spring to it. Cover in greased bowl to rise until doubled or about 1.5 hours. Remove from bowl, work again and put back in bowl to rise a second time, about 1 hour. Take dough and begin to roll out to about 1/2 inch thick, cut into desired shapes and allow to rest for 15 minutes, covered. Heat 1" of oil of choice over medium heat. Using slotted spoon lower doughnut into oil and fry for about 30 seconds per side or until just golden brown. Transfer to paper towels to absorb excess oil. Cool before dusting with powdered sugar, filling or icing doughnuts. Will keep on counter for 3 days or 5 days in the fridge.
Full Recipe:
2 cups Sugar
5lbs AP Flour
1 cup mashed potatoes
1 cup reserved potato water
4 eggs
3 cups warm milk
2 1/4 tsp dry active yeast
1/2 cup lukewarm water

Grandmothers are so special. Family recipes are a treasure. My Grams had a butter cookie recipe (that was ironically made with margarine 😆) that she would make cut out Christmas cookies every year. She passed away almost 7 years ago but every Christmas I make her butter cookies and use her rolling pin.🥰

I chuckled at the “margarine” 😂 how sweet though! We also make butter cutouts every Christmas ❤️ Thanks for watching and sharing ☺️

I never knew my grandparents. But my daughters love everything their Nana made. When she passed I got her cookbook and recipe cards. I try to make one of her sweets for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Not as good but the girls appreciate the effort.

It’s been a lot of years since I lost my Grama, she was 100 when she passed. I always remember her cooking at her wood cookstove. No one baked goods recipe stands out but I do make many of her canning and cookie recipes. I think of her whenever I cook a roast in her cast iron Dutch oven. Which I cherish. Recently I lost my mum, she was 90 and I still make lots of her recipes as well. What a wonderfully calming video. Thank you 💖🇨🇦

My German grandmother used to make Fastnachtskuchle a similar yeasted donut but without the potatoes. She only used to make these once a year for Fastnacht (Carnival in Feb/March) and I loved helping her make these - so many sweet memories ❤ Thanks for sharing!

Thank you so much for sharing family recipes. My Grandmother was a treasure to me I learned to bake and cook from her she would make pickle beets and eggs every Easter they were the best that I still make. My Grandmother's stuffing at Thanksgiving was yummy with a few simple ingredients made with love. I watched her in the kitchen a lot and got to help her. I plan making the potato donuts.

My grandmother made oatmeal scotchies. They are an oatmeal cookie with butterscotch chips and they are fantastic. She never used a recipe, it was a handful of this, a punch of that, a dash of something else.

My grandmother (my dad’s mom) makes a delicious hot chocolate. She only makes the hot chocolate during Christmas and New Years Eve. I’m fortunate that she is still with us. She now tells her grandkids if we want hot chocolate we have to go to her house and help her make it. I moved out of state and it’s hard to visit but I always enjoyed driving to her house with all the supplies needed to make her hot chocolate, she uses a huge stock pot that was given to her by her grandmother, I could listen to her stories about her childhood all day. Makes you appreciate the simple things. Feeling a little emotional, I think I’ll give grandma a call. Thank you for this sweet, beautiful video. The donuts look delicious 😊

What a lovely recipe to share! I also live in PA and have seen potato donuts, but never had them before. Now I’m intrigued! My grandmother would make a yeasted butter cookie with a thumbprint of homemade jam in the center. I’ve never had or seen anything like them elsewhere. My mom and I continue to make her recipe and now I make them with my daughter. I love how recipes help the memories of loved ones live on.

Both my Grandmothers were excellent cooks, they could turn the cheapest of meat cuts into absolute feasts, I think it was because they were brides and Mothers of small children in wartime Britain where food rationing here taught them to make a Family meal with the little they had.

Yes! It’s amazing what they could do with so little. I remember sitting and talking with my husbands grandmother about what they had to eat during Wartime. Very little abd not much diversity, yet somehow some of the recipes I’ve inherited from that era are the best! Thank you for sharing ❤️

Well, I wasn’t expecting to find myself feeling emotional and sentimental this morning. My gramma was such a very special person in my life. She went to be with Jesus in April, 1997. There is rarely a day that goes by that I don’t think of her. Working outside a lot these days with garden prep and landscape cleanup means she is coming to mind even more so. The food that stands out to me that was special for our family was making lefsa every Christmas. It was great family time with everyone helping and of course eating! It has been a long time since we’ve done lefsa but just last week my mom and I talked about giving it a try again. She thinks she has the equipment but will have to track it down. Share those precious stories with your children Kelsey. Your nana is part of who you are today and your precious children should hear how she poured herself into your life. Have a beautiful weekend. 🤗 Oh, I’m curious, do you think the coconut oil useable again if using it for frying?
