'I forgot to measure my groups from my Tarhunt using Lightfield IDS slugs at 200 yards, but I've grouped considerably tighter than his 100 yard group at 200. I've gotten nearly 0.5" 5 shot groups with that gun at 100 yards. No that's not a typo. But that Tarhunt RSG comes at quite a cost. And worse yet, Lightfield discontinued their f*cking slugs!!!! I can do 1" 5 shot groups at 100 yards with the Collet Cup Sabot slugs from Gun Servicing LLC, I think (well hope really) they're still in business!

(Can’t remember Its been over a decade). People don’t realize sabots are totally different than slugs for smooth barrels. If I was using a normal slug and smooth barrel, I wouldn’t take a shot past 125ish. There’s no doubt in my mind that round will take a deer ethically at 275-300 based on what I’ve learned being in a crappy state.

I remember when if you hit a 10 inch group you were good with slug guns LOL 😆 I’m not sure how many slug gun states did this or the exact date but I think in 2019 or 2020 they allowed straight wall cartridges rifles like 357 mag 350 legend 41 mag 44 mag 44-40 45 454 casull and 45-70 to be used in some or all them states…. And that is part of the reason and with COVID that Henry Rifles flew off the shelves and haven’t quite been able to recover and replenish stock in stores .

I know of places or certain drawn hunts where you can only use 12 ga slug, no buck shot. And some places where you can use only straight wall, like .350 Legend or .450 Bush Master. Even at 2700 fps, they are dropping 52 inches or so at 300 yards. Which is the safety part of them, in a highly populated area. In my county, the only firearm you can hunt with is shotgun during the bird seasons of eastern spring turkey and the late summer dove (Labor day Weekend is the opener.) I have a Mossberg 590A1SPX 12 ga smooth bore, which is great for slugs. But I may see if I can change to a threaded barrel for chokes for different upland and turkey.

In Indiana, we can hunt with 243 or larger centerfire rifle cartridges on private land and with straight wall cartridges on public land. I've taken probably six deer with a slug gun and a few more with a muzzleloader and we hunt from nine permanent deer stands on that property and honestly, I'm pretty sure only one of them in one small direction would even allow for over a 100 yard shot, and that's with clearing out shooting lanes before the season. I'm pretty sure I've never even shot a shotgun at a target past 100 yards. I'd say most of my deer taken with a shotgun or muzzleloader have been from about 10 yards to 70 yards and probably only one or two was past 50.

Slug gun state here in NJ, have a Rem. 870 with a 26 inch smoothbore Rem. choke barrel. Thinking about using a rifled choke to improve accuracy. I think I can use either Foster or Sabot slugs with the rifled choke. I don't think I would take a shot much over 50 yards though.
@Freakingstang2 жыл бұрын
A rifled slug barrel is 125ish dollars. No rifle choke is going to give you performance from or past 100. You’re wasting money shooting sabots from a smooth bore.
@sturisa2 жыл бұрын
@@Freakingstang Remington no longer makes slug barrels, else I would buy one. I would say a rifled choke in a smooth bore would give you better accuracy than using an IC choke in the barrel, that's all I'm saying. If you keep your shots to around 50 or so yards, should be fine. Carlson's, a company that makes these chokes states that you can use either Sabots or rifled slugs with their rifled chokes. I would test that at the range and see.

I’ve not been able to get the faster sabots to group out of a 500 with a rifled barrel. Mostly in the realm of 4” or more at 100 yards. The only ones that group, and they were almost MOA, are the Hornady “Lite” versions, which are quite a bit slower. I need to push them to 200 sometime.
@williamgaines97842 жыл бұрын
If they would publish what the subtensions were, you could calculate various holdovers for various weight and velocity slugs and put a DOPE chart on your buttstock or on a card hanging from your sling. I have a Burris Scout with BDC and have the ranges for different weight bullets in screenshots on my smartphone. The BDC usually only works for the highest power setting of second focal plane scopes. You can also use a duplex reticle as a crude BDC and rangefinder if you determine the subtension from the horizontal cross hair to the top of the thick portion of the lower vertical. Tou would see how far it is by knowing a target's diameter or setting a ruler/yardstick on the target face. If that distance is for example, 5 inches at 100 you would know it is about 15 at 300. If a deer's chest fills that space it is about 300 yards away. If you know your bullet, say that Norma Whitetail 30-06 zeroed at 100, you would put the top of that "post" on the deer shoulder at 300 and should get a good hit. Of course crosswinds put more variables in the mix. It was a fun video, but your bing bang's rear bean bag was not the most cooperative for your group size.

That's not bad for a slug gun WTW! I think it's safe to say 150 is probably the max range due to the group size in order to make an accurate but humane kill shot on a deer. In MI, the southern half of the lower peninsula is shotgun/straight walled cartridges only, but it's so heavily wooded, most hunters are shooting deer well within a hundred yards. I'm normally taking deer at 50 yards and in, so I keep a few slugs with me, but otherwise I'm always using buckshot. I have had great luck dropping many deer with buckshot and honestly, I haven't shot a deer with a slug in over 12 years now, but took one two years ago with a classic Remington 2.75" 12 pellet 00 buck. Always less than 50 yards in my case, but there are some open area's I can't utilize so I recently built an AR chambered in 350 legend I need to shoot and sight in. I'm hoping it won't be a jamomatic as I often hear about 350 AR's having due to feed ramp issues and mag related issues. I feel the 350L being more appropriate for those 75-200 yard shots. I topped mine off with a Bushnell Engage 2-10 so I'll see in April when I shoot with my buddies how this set up works and get my dope down as I have 0-400 yards to work with.

Good video. I have found that typically the Hornady SST slugs are not that accurate. I have found the Lightfield hybrid 2.75" shoot very well out of a rifled barrel slug gun. Now that was almost 20 years ago, but I personally will never use them again. They cost me a giant 8 point and a giant 10 point in Ohio within a week of each other! Lightfield hybrids are really consistent. You'll go to the poorhouse buying a box, but they are well worth it.

@@Freakingstang yeah, I found that out yesterday after I sent the reply. I still have 5 or 6 boxes though...
